If Windows 11 rearranges your desktop icons when you drag one, first check Auto arrange icons: right-click an empty area of the desktop, open View, and turn it off if you want to position icons manually. That setting is a sensible first check, not a confirmed explanation for every case. If the behavior continues, note whether it follows a display change or coincides with files being added or renamed.
What happens, and when?
The timing helps narrow down what to check. Does the layout change while you drag, as soon as you release the mouse, after you refresh or sign in, after connecting a monitor, or when a desktop file is created or renamed? These can point to different areas to investigate; the symptom alone does not identify a single cause.

There is no published frequency figure for this exact problem in the sources cited here, and the available Microsoft support documentation does not describe a guaranteed way to lock every icon to an exact position through all display changes.
Check desktop icon arrangement settings
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Choose View.
- If you want to place icons yourself, make sure Auto arrange icons is turned off.
- Choose whether to use Align icons to grid based on how you want icons to sit. Grid alignment snaps placement to a grid; it is separate from automatic arrangement and is a spacing preference.
Community troubleshooting responses recommend checking these options for snapping or rearrangement, but that does not establish that either setting is responsible on every PC. Microsoft’s desktop customization guide covers desktop icons and related customization, not a universal fix for icons changing position.

If the change follows a monitor or resolution change
When icons move after connecting or disconnecting a monitor, changing display settings, or waking the PC, inspect the active display configuration:
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Check which display is selected, then review Scale and Display resolution.
- Where Windows offers a Recommended value, Microsoft advises using it.
- If the resolution changes unexpectedly, check Settings > Windows Update for available updates, including graphics driver updates.
Microsoft notes that an unexpected resolution change can indicate a graphics driver needs updating. That is a diagnostic lead, not proof that display scaling caused the icon rearrangement. See Microsoft’s display settings guidance.

If icons appear when files are added or renamed
First determine whether the unexpected desktop item is a file or a shortcut. Then check the folders Windows may use for desktop contents:

These checks can help identify where new items are coming from. They do not show that OneDrive generally causes desktop layouts to rearrange. What community reports do—and do not—show
In a Microsoft Q&A thread dated November 8, 2024, one user reported that icons snapped back when moved to the bottom row on a main display but not on other screens. An independent advisor suggested checking Auto Arrange, grid alignment, scaling, and the icon cache. This is a report and community troubleshooting advice, not an official diagnosis: Microsoft Q&A.
A separate thread contains reports of desktop items moving after files were saved, copied, or renamed. A moderator suggested arrangement settings, updates, and a registry change, but a participant reported that the registry suggestion did not solve the problem. The available information does not establish that registry editing is a reliable fix, so do not start there.
