RGB backlighting alone is not enough: the feature works with compatible HID LampArray devices. If the keyboard is supported, check its firmware and connection. If it appears in Settings but ignores Windows effects, check which lighting controller has priority.
Check whether Windows Dynamic Lighting is enabled
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
- Look at the device cards near the top of the page for your keyboard.
Microsoft says compatible connected devices appear as cards on this page. If the keyboard is missing, continue with compatibility and connection checks. If it has a card but Windows controls do not affect its lighting, skip to the controller-priority section.

Confirm that the exact keyboard model is compatible
Dynamic Lighting support is based on the HID LampArray standard. Microsoft lists keyboards as a supported device type, but that does not mean every RGB keyboard implements the standard. Check the manufacturer’s support information for your keyboard’s exact model and confirm that it explicitly supports Windows Dynamic Lighting or HID LampArray. Microsoft’s LampArray device documentation also names Logitech G LIGHTSYNC RGB devices as supported; check your specific model rather than assuming the whole product family behaves identically.
If the manufacturer does not document support for your model, Windows may not list it even though its RGB lighting works through the manufacturer’s own software. Connection or driver troubleshooting cannot add LampArray compatibility to an unsupported keyboard.

Update the keyboard firmware
Check the manufacturer’s support page or utility for firmware for the exact model, then follow its update instructions. Microsoft’s November 14, 2023 Windows 11 update notice for KB5032190 says compatible Dynamic Lighting devices must use the latest firmware. This is a requirement for compatible devices, not a promise that updating will make an unsupported keyboard compatible.
Rule out a connection or keyboard problem
These checks help determine whether Windows is detecting the keyboard reliably. They are not guaranteed Dynamic Lighting fixes, and they do not change whether the model supports LampArray.

For a wired keyboard
- Unplug and reconnect the keyboard, then try a different USB port.
- If it is connected through a USB hub, connect it directly to the PC.
- Check that the cable and keyboard have power and are in good condition.
For a wireless keyboard
- Check the keyboard’s battery or charge level.
- If it uses a USB receiver, reseat the receiver and try another USB port.
- If it connects over Bluetooth, check that the Bluetooth connection is working.
Check whether Windows recognizes the keyboard normally
Test whether the keyboard types as expected. If it does not, try it on another PC with any required manufacturer driver installed. Check Windows Update or Device Manager for relevant driver updates. Microsoft’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance covers connection, power, receiver, Bluetooth, and driver checks.
If the keyboard appears, check controller priority
A keyboard card means Windows lists the device, but another RGB controller app may still take control of its effects. On the Dynamic Lighting page, expand Background light control. Inspect the controller list and move the controller you want to use higher in the priority order when appropriate. Microsoft describes this setting in its Dynamic Lighting documentation.

Background-light settings are associated with both the device and the USB port it uses. If you move a USB-connected keyboard to another port, Windows may treat it as a separate device for those settings, so check the page for another entry.
When it makes sense to consider a different keyboard
If the manufacturer does not confirm Dynamic Lighting or HID LampArray support for your exact model, you can keep using its existing lighting controls or choose a keyboard whose manufacturer explicitly documents compatibility. Before buying, verify support for the exact model and its firmware, and make sure its connection type suits your setup. Replacement is not the first step when a confirmed-compatible keyboard simply is not being detected.

What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
- No keyboard card: Windows is not listing it in Dynamic Lighting. Check the exact model’s compatibility, firmware, and connection.
- Keyboard card, but effects do not respond: Check Background light control for a higher-priority controller.
- Keyboard also fails to type normally: Investigate its connection, power, receiver or Bluetooth link, and driver before treating the issue as a lighting-only problem.
The precise cause depends on details such as the keyboard model, connection type, firmware, Windows build, and whether the keyboard works outside Dynamic Lighting. Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal fix for every missing-device case.
