The extender must also have a strong, stable link back to the router. It can extend usable coverage, but it cannot create internet capacity or repair a weak connection to the router.
Why the signal looks strong but performance is poor
Your phone measures its wireless connection to the extender. That signal can be strong even when the extender receives a weak signal from the router. Data still has to travel across both links: router to extender, then extender to device. A weak first link can bottleneck the whole route.

Walls and other obstacles can weaken signals; devices using the same radio spectrum can interfere; and congestion, device demand, and wireless overhead can reduce real-world throughput. NETGEAR lists these among the factors that affect Wi-Fi performance: Wi-Fi performance factors.
What an extender can—and cannot—do
An extender receives the router’s Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts it, helping carry coverage into an area where the router’s signal is still usable. It does not increase the speed included in your internet plan. NETGEAR states that “Range extenders cannot increase the native speed provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP); this limit is determined by the ISP and the performance of the main router.” That is vendor guidance, but it captures the key distinction: an extender can improve reach, not raise the connection’s underlying capacity. See NETGEAR’s range extender overview.

Verizon similarly says its Wi-Fi Extender Mini is designed to extend coverage, not increase Wi-Fi speed; its note is specific to that product. Actual results can vary with network traffic, building materials, device demand, and network overhead. Verizon Wi-Fi Extender Mini guidance.
An extender also cannot turn a distant public Wi-Fi signal into a dependable home hotspot. NETGEAR says its extenders are not designed to be daisy-chained, so avoid building a chain of extenders to reach farther. Compatibility and performance vary by router bands and extender capabilities. Where to place an extender
Place it between the router and the weak-coverage area, but not so far from the router that its own connection is poor. TP-Link calls placement the biggest factor in extender performance and advises starting roughly halfway to the weak area, then adjusting to keep the router-to-extender signal strong. Its distance estimates are guidance for certain models, not universal limits: for some models with few obstacles and a strong router signal, TP-Link gives approximate ranges of 25–40 feet for units with external antennas and 20–35 feet for internal-antenna units. The building and signal quality matter more than those distances. TP-Link placement guidance.

A less obstructed, elevated location may help, but the best spot depends on the home and device. If the extender has a signal indicator or status light, use it while testing locations rather than relying on the phone’s signal bars alone.

How to diagnose and improve a weak connection
- Check the connection at the router. Test near the main router. If the connection is already slow there, an extender will not fix the underlying ISP or router limit.
- Confirm which network your device is using. Connect the phone or computer to the extender’s network, especially if it has a separate network name. A device that remains connected to the router may not be testing the extender at all. TP-Link troubleshooting guidance.
- Move the extender toward the router if its upstream signal is weak. Keep it between the router and the problem area, and check its signal indicator where available. Moving it closer to the router may improve the connection even if that means it sits farther from the room with poor coverage.
- Reduce obstructions and interference. Try a more open location away from the obstacles and electronics listed above. Retest in the same problem area after each move so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Update firmware and re-pair if necessary. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. TP-Link recommends checking range, testing with a client connected to the extender, and updating firmware when needed. TP-Link troubleshooting guidance.
- Test with fewer extenders. If several are close together, temporarily turn some off and compare. GFiber warns that too many extenders in a small space can add interference and congestion. Its coverage recommendations apply to its own equipment, not every home. GFiber troubleshooting guidance.
When another setup makes more sense
Choose based on how the network reaches the additional coverage point, the home’s construction, and whether you need one room covered or broader whole-home roaming. None of these options raises the internet plan’s native speed by itself.
| Option | How it connects back | May fit when | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi extender | Wireless link to the router | You need coverage in one weak area and can place it where the router signal is still strong | A weak wireless backhaul can bottleneck performance |
| Access point or extender in AP mode | Ethernet cable back to the router | You can run a cable to the area where coverage is needed | The cable must connect back to the router; installation may be inconvenient |
| Mesh system | Links between compatible mesh nodes, often wireless | You want a coordinated network across multiple rooms | Compatibility and performance depend on the system; third-party extenders may not fully work with every mesh setup |
| Powerline adapter | Network carried over existing electrical wiring | Running Ethernet is difficult and the home’s wiring can support the connection | Results depend on the home’s electrical wiring; no general performance level is guaranteed |
If walls, distance, or interference prevent a stable wireless backhaul, Ethernet is the clearest way to remove that wireless link from the path. TP-Link says some extenders can switch to Access Point mode when connected to the router by Ethernet. TP-Link placement and AP-mode guidance.
