The total may also include a domain, SSL product, or other add-on billed separately. To see what changed, compare the amount and term on your original invoice with each renewal line item—not just the advertised monthly equivalent.
Why can a hosting bill rise after the first year?
Introductory pricing and renewal pricing are often different. DreamHost says its promotional pricing applies to the first term and displays renewal rates alongside promotional rates on its plan cards. Namecheap also publishes renewal prices separately. Those are provider-specific disclosures, not proof that every host doubles or triples its rates.

A headline monthly price can also obscure the billing interval. A low monthly equivalent may require paying for several years upfront, while the next charge may cover one year or another multi-year term. Compare the full amount due and how many months it covers.

Hosting is not necessarily the only renewing item. Web.com describes first-year domain and SSL offers with separate renewal charges, and says products auto-renew at the then-current rate unless canceled. Check the invoice for each product and its renewal term; domain and SSL charges are not universal hosting fees.

Features can affect whether two plans are comparable. DreamHost advertises daily automated WordPress backups and Let’s Encrypt SSL, but availability and retention can vary by product and plan. A cheaper plan may not include the same services, so compare what is actually included before treating the prices as equivalent.
Examples of published renewal prices
The following Namecheap shared-hosting prices apply to renewal invoices issued on or after May 19, 2026, according to its May 8, 2026 notice. They are provider-published amounts, not a market-wide benchmark.
Rank #2
| Plan | Annual renewal | Two-year renewal |
|---|---|---|
| Stellar | $55.88 | $102.88 |
| Stellar Plus | $85.44 | $146.44 |
| Stellar Business | $128.88 | $251.88 |
DreamHost pricing examples accessed in 2026 show different offer terms: one plan auto-renews at $7.99 per month after four years, while another auto-renews at $10.99 per month after one year. These are offer-specific examples, not a like-for-like comparison with Namecheap plans. Confirm the current plan, eligibility, and renewal offer directly before relying on either figure.
Prices can change. Namecheap announced the 2026 renewal update for invoices issued from May 19 onward; older quotes may not reflect that schedule. Its notice attributes the update to investment in service quality and performance, but that is the company’s stated rationale, not an independently verified cost analysis. Bluehost’s renewal FAQ likewise directs readers to check the provider site for current introductory offers; it does not establish an unlisted renewal price.

How to calculate what your next bill really costs
- Find the original invoice. Record the amount paid and the number of months covered. Do not substitute the advertised monthly equivalent for the actual upfront payment.
- Read the renewal notice. Note the next amount due, the period it covers, the plan name, and any stated renewal date or rate.
- Separate the line items. List hosting, domain, SSL, backups, and any other add-ons individually, along with their billing periods and charges.
- Calculate each term’s effective monthly cost. Divide the amount for that term by the months covered. Keep the full charge visible too: a monthly average does not show the cash amount billed at once.
- Compare like with like. Check renewal price, commitment length, included features, and separately billed items. A short introductory term and a longer renewal term are not directly comparable from monthly equivalents alone.
How to decide whether to renew or switch
First establish which part of the increase comes from the hosting plan and which parts come from separate products. Then compare the renewal terms with alternatives using the same billing duration and a comparable feature set. Do not assume a new provider’s introductory price will remain fixed indefinitely; look for its renewal rate and the term attached to it.
If switching, account for the actual migration requirements of your provider and site setup, and consider the possibility of interruption. The published pricing information here does not establish how long a particular migration takes or how difficult it will be. Check your site’s setup before treating migration as a simple price-only decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does every hosting company double or triple its price?
No market-wide statistic in the available provider disclosures establishes a typical renewal increase, and they do not show that every host doubles or triples rates. A reader’s description of a bill jump is an anecdote, not evidence of how common the pattern is. The reliable way to diagnose an increase is to compare the actual first-term and renewal charges, contract lengths, and separately renewing products.
