When a voice assistant gets you wrong, first identify which part failed: it may not have detected the wake phrase, it may have converted your speech into the wrong words, or it may have recognized the words but selected the wrong person’s account. Those failures use different settings. Check the microphone and wake-word controls for the first problem, language and correction tools for the second, and speaker-recognition settings such as Google Voice Match for the third.
“Recognizing my voice” is also ambiguous. Speaker identification decides who is talking; speech recognition (or dictation) turns sound into text. Google documents these as separate features, and retraining Voice Match is not a general remedy for incorrectly transcribed words.

Start with the symptom, not the setting
Use this quick diagnosis before changing anything. It prevents you from retraining an account-identification feature when the real issue is language selection or dictation.

Why a voice assistant can misunderstand you
Wake-word detection is separate from transcription
If an assistant never wakes, there is no transcription to fix. Google’s speaker troubleshooting says a solid orange light ring on a Google speaker means its microphone is turned off. Restore microphone access and follow the device-specific wake-word steps at Google’s speaker troubleshooting guide. Treating a silent, muted device as a “bad recognition” problem sends you to the wrong controls.
Speaker identity and spoken words are different jobs
Google Voice Match uses a voice model to determine whether the speaker should receive personal results. Its purpose is account association, not rewriting every sentence into more accurate text. Google provides Voice Match setup and retraining in Google Home settings at the Voice Match help page. Retraining can help the service identify the person, but it should not be presented as a universal fix for names or dictation errors.
Language and device eligibility affect the result
An assistant has to know which language or language combination to expect, and the exact device may support fewer languages than the service in general. Apple recommends setting Siri and HomePod to the same language for household voice recognition; its instructions are at Apple’s HomePod voice-recognition guide. Google’s advanced voice typing has its own Pixel, system and language requirements rather than applying to every Android phone. Confirm compatibility before assuming a missing option is a fault.

Words, names and speaking styles vary
Built-in models can need help with an unusual name, specialized term or individual speaking style. On supported Pixel phones, advanced voice typing lets you correct a misheard word by speaking it, typing it, spelling it or choosing a suggestion. That correction workflow is different from Voice Match and is documented at Google’s advanced voice-typing page.

Official Google and Apple help pages do not establish one universal error rate or a single acoustic cause across accents, rooms and devices. Do not interpret a setting change as a guarantee of accuracy; use the controls that correspond to the failure you can observe.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce the failure with a short, known phrase. Note whether the wake phrase was detected, what text appeared, and which account or result was used.
- Check the microphone. On a Google speaker, an orange light ring means the microphone is off. Re-enable it before testing again.
- Check the active language on both ends. Verify the assistant, keyboard or dictation language and the device’s supported-language list. On HomePod, align Siri and HomePod language.
- Separate identity from dictation. If the transcript is correct but personal results are wrong, work on Voice Match or the platform’s household recognition. If the transcript itself is wrong, use language and correction tools instead.
- Apply a correction immediately. Use the platform’s suggestion, spelling, typing or spoken-correction control while the mistaken word is visible.
- Test the accessibility path. If the speaker has atypical speech, look for the platform’s supported listening or Voice Control options and verify the stated language condition.
- Review learning and privacy choices. Features that use saved interactions or audio are optional or device-specific. Turn them on only when their data use and eligibility fit your needs.
Google: choose the feature that matches the problem
Google Voice Match: identifying the person
Voice Match is available on supported Assistant-enabled devices. Google says it uses a voice model to determine whether a person should receive personal results, and the Google Home setup includes retraining steps. Language availability depends on the device. Google also states that up to six people can use Voice Match in one home through the Google Home app; that is a configuration limit, not a recognition-accuracy statistic, and product limits can change.
Use Voice Match when the assistant responds with another household member’s calendar, music service or other personal result even though the words were understood. Open the Google Home app, select the relevant home and Assistant settings, then follow the Voice Match setup or retraining prompts described in Google’s current instructions. If a command is transcribed incorrectly, Voice Match retraining is not the appropriate first step.

Google describes personalized speech recognition as helping Assistant recognize a person’s unique speaking style, words and phrases. The feature is available in Assistant on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, according to Google’s documentation. It can use saved interactions, corrections, audio and recognized text on the device to learn over time.

This is a transcription-personalization feature, not an account switch and not a setting for every Android phone. Google explicitly says it does not control other data and personalization settings. Check the Pixel model and the current Assistant settings before looking for it; its presence or absence on another device does not indicate a hardware failure.
Google summarizes the purpose this way: “Personalized speech recognition helps Google Assistant get better at recognizing your unique speaking style, words, and phrases.” The statement describes the feature’s intent, not a promise that every speaker or word will improve.
Advanced voice typing: correction on Pixel 6 and later
Google’s advanced voice typing is documented for Pixel 6 or later, with specific system and language requirements. It provides supported-language detection and lets you correct a result by speaking, typing, spelling or selecting a suggestion. Google says text stays on the device except when using specified edit features. Those claims apply to the documented Pixel configuration, not automatically to all Android dictation.
To use it, open a text field on an eligible Pixel, start the keyboard’s voice-typing control, and watch the transcript. When a word is wrong, use the correction affordance or speak, type or spell the intended word as Google describes. If language detection or the correction controls are missing, check the phone model, system version and supported-language list at the advanced voice-typing requirements rather than repeatedly retraining Voice Match.

Apple: Siri, HomePod and accessibility controls
Align Siri and HomePod language
Apple’s HomePod guidance covers voice recognition for multiple household members and personalized media. It recommends setting Siri and HomePod to the same language. If one device is configured differently, correct the language alignment before interpreting the result as a failure to recognize a particular person. Follow the device-specific steps at Apple’s HomePod voice-recognition support page.
Improve Siri & Dictation is optional data sharing
Apple’s “Improve Siri & Dictation” setting can be changed in device settings. In documentation published June 2, 2026, Apple says the option helps develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Translate and related features. Opting in allows Apple to store and review samples of audio, transcripts and related request data. Apple describes a random device-generated identifier and says request history is not used to build a marketing profile or sold. These are Apple’s stated practices for this setting, not a description of every voice assistant.
Apple does not state that opting in guarantees a noticeable accuracy improvement for an individual. Decide based on the privacy trade-off and your willingness to contribute samples, then change the setting in the device’s Siri and Dictation controls. The full explanation is at Apple’s Improve Siri & Dictation page.

Apple documents an atypical-speech listening option for Siri under a specific configuration with English (U.S.) as the primary language. Availability and behavior therefore depend on the device, operating-system version and language; do not assume the option is available in every locale. The relevant controls are described in Apple’s Siri accessibility guide.

Voice Control is a separate accessibility path. In supported configurations it offers dictation and spelling modes, which can be useful when ordinary Siri interaction is a poor fit. Apple’s setup and command information is at the Voice Control guide. Availability should be checked for the user’s language and device rather than inferred from another region’s instructions.

Privacy and on-device processing: what the settings actually mean
Google’s separate personalization controls
Google’s personalized speech recognition page says saved interactions, corrections, audio and recognized text can help the feature learn on-device. It also states that this setting does not control other account and device personalization settings. Therefore, turning it on or off should not be described as changing every privacy switch in your Google account.
Apple’s contribution setting
Apple’s Improve Siri & Dictation explanation covers the optional sharing of samples for service improvement. Read the current wording in your device settings and Apple’s documentation before opting in, especially if audio or transcripts are sensitive. The random identifier and Apple’s statement about marketing profiles describe this particular program; they should not be generalized to unrelated services.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Retraining Voice Match for a misspelled contact. Voice Match addresses who is speaking, while a wrong name is a transcription issue.
- Changing privacy learning settings expecting an instant fix. Google’s and Apple’s documentation describes intended learning or service improvement, not guaranteed individual gains.
- Assuming a feature is universal. Pixel model, operating-system version and language requirements determine whether Google’s advanced typing or personalized recognition appears.
- Ignoring a muted microphone. A device that never listens cannot produce a better transcript.
- Assuming accessibility options have global language coverage. Apple’s atypical-speech Siri documentation specifically names English (U.S.) as the primary-language condition.
- Comparing brands by anecdotes. No controlled recognition-rate comparison is established here; test the settings and language on your own device instead.
When the documented fixes do not solve it
Record the exact phrase, active language, device model, operating-system version and resulting transcript. Repeat the test with the microphone confirmed on and with a short phrase. If the failure is still reproducible, consult the manufacturer’s device-specific support for that model and language. The official pages cited here are platform instructions, and their eligibility, language lists and interface labels can change as products are updated.
