Why Virtual Pet Games Feel Like the Early Internet—and What Makes Them Last

Tamagotchi and Neopets paired small routines with worlds worth revisiting. Their lasting appeal comes from care, participation and continuity—but online worlds need active stewardship.

Virtual pet games feel like the early internet because they made a small, personal ritual part of a larger place to revisit. Tamagotchi made care portable and immediate; Neopets turned a pet into a doorway to games, trading, forums, customization and shared stories. That combination can make a simple game feel more memorable than a technically elaborate one—but nostalgia alone cannot keep an online world working.

Two ways to make a virtual pet feel present

The original Tamagotchi launched in Japan on November 23, 1996, according to Bandai Namco. Its small handheld put a pet in a device its owner could carry. Feeding, cleaning, playing and medicating were ongoing needs; neglect could have consequences, including the pet’s death, as Wellcome Collection’s account describes. A few repeated actions could therefore feel consequential: the pet was not just a character on a screen, but a responsibility that traveled through the day with its owner.

Neopets, launched in 1999, made a different proposition. The browser was not merely where a pet lived; it was a whole destination. Players could raise creatures, play mini-games, trade items, join Neoboards and guilds, customize profiles, and follow site-wide plots. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) describes its blend of text, images and simple Flash animation as accessible even over slow connections. Its pages invited users to explore rather than requiring the latest hardware or a high-speed connection.

These formats evoke different parts of early digital life: a personal device with a persistent care loop, and a web world that mixed play with exploration and other people. Their common design move was to give repeated attention a home—a pet, routine or place that could be returned to.

Why the early-web feeling was more than nostalgia

A destination with things to discover

Neopets offered more than a single activity. Moving from pet care to a game, a shop, a message board or a customized profile made the site feel like a small internet of its own. Its relatively simple visual style was part of that experience: a page could be readable and usable without looking like a modern, high-production game.

ACMI records that Neopets had reached 1 trillion page views by 2011. That historical figure signals the scale of use the site once attracted; it is not a measure of current activity.

Players had ways to participate

Forums and guilds turned a solo pet into a point of contact with other players. Trading gave items movement between people, while customizable profiles let users make a corner of the site their own. The experience could feel personal and communal at once.

That participation extended to the world’s story. In the 2003 Champions of Meridell plot, players chose sides, and Darigan’s victory became part of official lore, according to ACMI. A shared outcome gave users a reason to follow what happened next—and a memory of having helped shape it.

Care made a small game emotionally legible

A pet’s needs are easy to understand, and the routine of tending to them gives a player a reason to return. Wellcome Collection’s description of Tamagotchi also points to a trade-off: when neglect can bring an end to the pet’s life, care may feel meaningful, but it can also prompt guilt or grief. That response is not universal, and accounts of player memories do not establish a controlled cause of attachment. They do show why a simple mechanic can carry emotional weight.

What helps these games last

Keep the recognizable core, evolve around it

Bandai’s account of Tamagotchi emphasizes continuity in the basic object: an egg-shaped device, an LCD screen and three buttons. The company says later generations added features such as infrared communication, Wi-Fi and NFC without abandoning that recognizable design. This is Bandai’s explanation of its approach, not an independent assessment of every generation.

  • Perfect gift: Unlike a traditional GigaPet, CompuKitty lets boys and girls choose between classic CompuKitty and magical StarCat for two styles of play! Digital animal game is ideal for ages 6+

Bandai also credits fan loyalty through periods when the toy’s popularity waned and says it continued releasing new models every few years. The example suggests a route to longevity: preserve what makes the experience legible, while giving returning players reasons to engage with newer versions. Bandai reported 100 million units shipped worldwide by the end of July 2025; that is the company’s shipment figure, not an independent sales audit.

For an online world, stewardship is part of the game

A handheld can remain with its owner, but a browser world depends on software, servers and an operator keeping it accessible. That distinction is an inference from the formats, not a claim that physical products are immune to loss. Wellcome Collection’s account of Facebook’s Pet Society describes the consequences when the service closed: some players felt grief and anger as their pets became inaccessible.

Neopets shows the other side of the problem: affection can bring people back, but it does not repair a service. In a 2025 interview with Jellyneo, CEO Dominic Law said the company realized it needed to prioritize Classic, which required more repair work than expected. Keeping a digital world alive means tending to its infrastructure as well as its familiar activities and community.

What returning players find—and what nostalgia cannot do

In April 2024, The Guardian reported that former Neopets players described the site as a time capsule of the early-2000s internet. Law told the paper that returning users found the game and their pets still there, comparing the experience to meeting an old friend. That is his explanation of the reaction, not a promise that every returning player will feel the same way.

The Guardian also reported that Neopets had more than 25 million active users at its mid-2000s peak, and that around 40% of its users were ages 25 to 34 while 26% were ages 18 to 24 at the time of the April 2024 article. These are dated figures, not current audience counts. The same reporting covered technical decay and the work of restoring the service: a familiar world can invite a return, but nostalgia cannot by itself make that world reliable or sustainable.

The difference between remembering a pet and preserving a service

A physical virtual pet and an online pet world offer different kinds of continuity. A handheld device can stay with its owner, while a browser game’s persistence depends on an operator maintaining the world and the access to it. The closure of Pet Society makes that risk concrete: players’ attachment could not keep the service open or make their pets accessible again.

That fragility is part of why a surviving world can feel unusually powerful. Returning to an old pet or familiar page can reconnect a person with an earlier version of their life. But durable affection and durable infrastructure are separate things. For a game to last, its makers must preserve the parts people recognize while doing the less nostalgic work of keeping the experience usable.
