Final Fantasy has no single, franchise-wide vehicle system: each game assigns transport its own role in exploration, play, and storytelling. Chocobos may be mounts or terrain specialists, airships can open up a larger world, and other vehicles may handle a specific route, activity, or story beat.
What vehicles are in Final Fantasy?
It depends on the game. Chocobos and airships are familiar examples, but their abilities and rules are not consistent across the series. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, for example, transport includes terrain-specific chocobos, a buggy, the Costa del Sol wheelie, and Cid Highwind’s Tiny Bronco. In Final Fantasy III, the manual describes an airship as a way to explore the world quickly and freely. These are examples from particular titles, not a complete roster or universal set of mechanics.

A useful way to compare a vehicle is to ask what ground or medium it covers, what movement it enables, what must happen before it can be used, and whether it serves travel, a local activity, or the story.
| Example and game | Terrain or movement | Access or use | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth chocobos | Different types climb marked steep slopes, glide from launch ranges, cross water, or use mushrooms and branches. | Can be caught in the wild and called within their home region. | Mounts and terrain-focused traversal. |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth buggy | Crosses sandy terrain and shallow water; Square Enix describes it as faster than chocobos. | Specific unlock conditions are not stated on the cited world page. | Overland travel across suitable terrain. |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth wheelie | A two-wheeled, self-balancing vehicle. | Used to explore Costa del Sol. | Local exploration. |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Tiny Bronco | An aircraft used for flights. | It lands at old airstrips. | Travel and story progression. |
| Final Fantasy III airship | Enables quicker, freer world exploration, according to the game manual. | Available after it is secured in that game. | Expands the scope of exploration; the manual also says field enemies cannot attack while riding it. |
Details in the table come from the [Square Enix Final Fantasy VII Rebirth world page] and the [Final Fantasy III manual hosted by Nintendo]. The manual’s enemy-avoidance instruction is specific to that version of Final Fantasy III; it should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

What do chocobos do?
Mounts and traversal in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
In Rebirth, chocobos are more than a way to move faster on foot. Square Enix describes them as wild-caught mounts that can be called within their home region, with different types helping the player handle particular terrain:
- Mountain chocobos climb marked steep slopes.
- Sky chocobos glide from launch ranges.
- Ocean chocobos cross water.
- Forest chocobos use mushrooms and branches to move through their environment.
That specialization makes the chocobo part of the game’s route design: the right mount can open a way across terrain that ordinary movement cannot handle. These abilities describe Rebirth, not every chocobo in Final Fantasy.

Racing in Final Fantasy XIV
Chocobos also have a competitive role in Final Fantasy XIV. At the Gold Saucer, Chocobo Racing involves specially trained birds, rating progression, and breeding retired chocobos to pass on traits. The official Lodestone guide lists level 15 and completion of “So You Want to Be a Jockey” as prerequisites; consult the [live Chocobo Racing guide] for current instructions, since game requirements can change.
Why are airships important in Final Fantasy?
An airship can change how much of a world feels reachable. The Final Fantasy III manual puts that function plainly: “When you secure the Airship, you’ll be able to explore the world quickly and freely.” It also says that enemies in the field cannot attack while riding chocobos or airships. Those statements describe the manual’s version of Final Fantasy III, rather than a rule shared by every installment.

Airships can also make a setting’s history and technology visible. In a feature about Final Fantasy X, Square Enix describes an airship recovered from ancient ocean ruins and repaired to full operation by the Al Bhed. The craft is equipped to face Sin, with battle armaments and a sphere-search function. Its role therefore extends beyond transport: its recovery and operation connect the Al Bhed to the world’s technology and the struggle against Sin. See the [Final Fantasy Portal feature on the Final Fantasy X airship].

Vehicle-related play can be recreational or competitive as well as practical. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth groups G-Bike and chocobo races among its minigames, while Final Fantasy XIV gives chocobos a dedicated racing activity with training and breeding systems. In Final Fantasy III, by contrast, the manual emphasizes the travel and field-safety functions of chocobos and airships.
Across these examples, transport helps define how a particular game expects players to explore, what activities they can pursue, and what its world is like. The details belong to the named game: a mount’s climbing ability, a vehicle’s route access, or an airship’s story history should not be generalized across the franchise.
