A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and a VPN server and make websites see the server’s IP address instead of your original one. That can reduce what a local network or internet service provider can read about traffic sent through the tunnel, or provide secure access to an employer’s network. It does not make you anonymous, protect every connection, or eliminate the need to trust the VPN provider. Whether it is worthwhile depends on your specific threat, the traffic you route, and the provider’s practices.
What a VPN changes
When a VPN is active, selected traffic travels from your device to a provider-controlled server through a VPN tunnel, then onward to its destination. For traffic that is both routed through the VPN and protected by encryption, someone operating the local network cannot read the contents in transit to the VPN endpoint. Your internet service provider can still see that a VPN connection is being used, and the VPN operator becomes an intermediary for the routed traffic. (Federal Trade Commission guidance; U.S. government guide)
Destination websites may see the VPN server’s IP address rather than the address assigned to your home, office, or mobile connection. That can obscure the original network location from the destination, but it does not hide an identity disclosed through an account login, cookies, browser data, or information entered into a site. (FTC)
Reasons people use a VPN
Reduce local-network and ISP visibility
A VPN can prevent the local Wi-Fi operator from reading the contents of traffic covered by the encrypted tunnel. It also changes which company handles that routed traffic: the provider can potentially observe or otherwise process it. This is a shift of trust, not a disappearance of trust. Use a different apparent IP address
Sites generally receive the VPN server’s address for routed connections. This may be useful when you do not want a destination to learn your ordinary network address, but it does not defeat account-based identification or other tracking mechanisms.
Connect to an employer’s network
A managed workplace VPN can authenticate employees and connect them to internal systems. That is an organizational remote-access function, not evidence that an arbitrary consumer VPN is a complete security product. (FTC secure remote-access guidance; UK National Cyber Security Centre)

What a VPN does not do
It does not make you anonymous
The FTC’s wording is direct: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.” A provider may be able to see, intercept, or modify activity passing through its service, while websites can identify you when you sign in or provide personal details. (FTC)
It is not automatically malware or phishing protection
A VPN changes the network path; it is not a general guarantee against malicious downloads, phishing, unsafe websites, or tracking through accounts. The service’s marketing claims should not be treated as proof of those protections.

It does not cover traffic that bypasses it
Only traffic routed through the VPN receives that tunnel’s protection. Split tunnelling deliberately sends selected apps or destinations outside the tunnel. Platform rules can also exclude some app or system traffic. (UK NCSC; Apple)
Do you need a VPN on public Wi-Fi?
Not automatically. The FTC says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” Check that the site uses HTTPS (often shown by a lock indicator) and keep your device and apps updated. (FTC public Wi-Fi guidance)

A VPN can still add an encrypted device-to-VPN leg, particularly for traffic that is not otherwise encrypted, but it does not turn an untrusted provider into a trustworthy one or protect connections that bypass the tunnel.

Provider trust and data practices
The provider handles the routed traffic, so read its privacy policy, data-retention statements, permissions, and explanations of encryption. The FTC recommends researching the app and checking whether information is shared with third parties. “No logs” is a marketing assertion unless supported by credible evidence; it should not be accepted as independent verification. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Reliability and network side effects
Forced routing can block network use when the VPN cannot establish a connection and may complicate captive-portal sign-in at hotels, airports, or cafés. VPNs can also interfere with services that depend on seeing your ordinary IP address or with local-network functions. (UK NCSC)
Apple-specific interactions
Apple notes that VPN configurations control traffic that would otherwise use iCloud Private Relay, and that some app or system-service traffic may not pass through a VPN. Network connectivity can therefore vary by configuration. (Apple VPN privacy information; Apple connectivity support)
Choosing the right option for your goal
| Option | Main purpose | Who handles covered traffic | Coverage and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| No consumer VPN | Use ordinary ISP and website connections | Your ISP/local network and each destination according to their roles | No additional VPN tunnel; HTTPS still protects encrypted web sessions |
| Consumer VPN | Change the network path and apparent IP; reduce local-network visibility for routed traffic | The VPN provider becomes the intermediary | Only routed traffic is covered; identity can still be revealed by logins and other data |
| Workplace VPN | Reach an organization’s private resources | The employer or its managed VPN service | Configured for authorized users and internal access, not necessarily general browsing privacy |
| Apple Private Relay | Protect Safari browsing and DNS through separate relays | Apple and a separate relay operator have divided roles | Available to eligible iCloud+ users in supported regions; narrower than a device-wide VPN |
Apple describes Private Relay’s design and regional limitations in its support documentation. It is a narrower privacy feature rather than a universal VPN replacement.
A practical decision checklist
- Define the threat: Are you trying to reduce visibility for a local network, change the IP shown to a destination, or reach a work resource?
- Map the traffic: Confirm which apps, browsers, DNS requests, and device services are routed, and whether split tunnelling is enabled.
- Evaluate the provider: Read the privacy policy, permissions, collection and sharing disclosures, encryption details, independent assessments, and security history.
- Plan for failure: Know how to reach a captive portal, disable the VPN temporarily, and restore connectivity if forced routing prevents access.
- Keep HTTPS habits: A VPN does not replace checking the connection security of the site you are using.
Bottom line
Use a VPN when its specific benefit—an encrypted route to a provider, a different apparent IP, or authorized access to a private work network—matches your needs and justifies trusting that provider. Do not buy one on the promise of anonymity or universal protection: HTTPS, careful account practices, secure devices, and an honest assessment of what traffic is actually routed remain essential.
