Choose Google Drive for Google Workspace collaboration, OneDrive when Windows and Microsoft 365 are central, Proton Drive when privacy is your priority, pCloud for a lifetime (one-time) storage option, and Box for managed business content. Keep Dropbox itself as the baseline, and treat a NAS as a different, locally maintained storage model rather than a like-for-like cloud replacement.
Start with your existing ecosystem
Moving files is only part of the decision. Editing documents with colleagues, recovering an accidentally deleted folder, administering a team and using the same files across phones and computers can matter more than the headline storage allowance. Independent roundups identify Google Drive with Google Workspace collaboration and OneDrive with Microsoft 365 and Windows workflows (TechRadar; Zapier).
- Google account and collaborative documents: shortlist Google Drive.
- Windows PCs, Office and Microsoft 365: shortlist OneDrive.
- Privacy-led storage choice: examine Proton Drive’s plan details rather than relying on broad security labels.
- Prefer paying once instead of every month: compare pCloud’s lifetime tiers.
- Business governance and content workflows: evaluate Box’s user requirements and plan-specific limits.
At-a-glance comparison
| Service | Best fit (editorial judgment) | Published plan facts | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Google Workspace users and collaborative document work | 15 GB free; 100 GB at $1.99/month, as listed by TechRadar’s 2026 roundup | Those figures come from a secondary source; verify Google’s live offer before subscribing. |
| OneDrive | Windows and Microsoft 365 households | Microsoft 365 Personal: $99.99/year and 1 TB on Microsoft’s US page; use on up to five devices simultaneously | This is a Microsoft 365 bundle, not a standalone OneDrive-only price; country and billing terms matter. |
| Proton Drive | Readers prioritizing a privacy-oriented provider | Drive Plus: 200 GB and 10-year recovery for previous file versions | Check the provider’s documentation for the exact encryption and feature scope of the plan you select. |
| pCloud | People considering a one-time lifetime purchase | Lifetime tiers of 500 GB, 2 TB and 10 TB | Displayed one-time prices and promotions change; confirm the current offer before purchase. |
| Box | Organizations needing administration and business content workflows | Business comparison lists unlimited storage; listed business plans require at least three users | Single-file upload limits vary by plan, so unlimited storage does not mean identical upload capability. |
| Dropbox | Baseline for comparing a move | US Standard individual plan: $9.99/month, 2 TB and 30 days to restore deleted files | Verify the live US offer, billing frequency and eligibility immediately before switching. |
Prices are not a controlled cross-provider comparison: the figures above differ by country, currency, billing period, bundles, user count and promotional status.
Best alternatives by use case
Google Drive: best for Google Workspace collaboration
Google Drive is the natural first stop if your files live alongside Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail and shared Google Workspace drives. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup names it its overall pick and describes syncing, sharing and simultaneous collaboration. Its listed 15 GB free and 100 GB for $1.99/month are secondary-source figures, so check Google’s current pricing page before treating them as a purchase quote. Choose it when browser-based co-editing and Google account integration outweigh the value of staying with Dropbox’s existing workflow.

#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
OneDrive: best for Windows and Microsoft 365
OneDrive fits computers already using Windows and Office. Microsoft’s US plan page lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year for 1 TB, with use on up to five devices simultaneously (Microsoft plan details). The subscription also includes Microsoft apps and other features, so compare the value of the whole bundle with your current Office costs instead of dividing the price into a storage-only rate.
Proton Drive: best for a privacy-oriented choice
Proton’s pricing page lists Drive Plus with 200 GB and recovery of previous file versions for 10 years (Proton Drive plans). That extended recovery window is useful when an old version must be retrieved long after an accidental change. Read the plan’s own technical documentation for encryption and sharing behavior; “privacy-focused” is not proof that every feature or plan has identical protections.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
pCloud: best for a lifetime storage purchase
pCloud lists lifetime capacity tiers of 500 GB, 2 TB and 10 TB (pCloud plans). A lifetime purchase changes the cost question from recurring bills to the provider’s long-term viability and your willingness to pay upfront. The page displays changing one-time prices and promotions, so record the currency, exact tier and terms shown at checkout rather than relying on an old advertised amount.
Box: best for business administration
Box is designed around organizational content management rather than a simple personal sync folder. Its business comparison lists unlimited storage and a minimum of three users on the listed business plans (Box pricing). Review the plan-specific single-file upload limit, administrative controls, sharing policies and user licensing before choosing it; the unlimited-storage label does not make those limits identical across tiers.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)

What Dropbox still offers as the baseline
Dropbox’s US plans page lists Standard for one person at $9.99 per month, with 2 TB and 30 days to restore deleted files (Dropbox plans). Use those values as the reference point for a switch, while checking whether the displayed offer is monthly, annual, introductory or otherwise restricted. A cheaper alternative with weaker recovery or collaboration may be a poor trade for your actual workflow.
How to choose beyond storage capacity
- List the devices and accounts you already use. Note Windows or macOS computers, iOS or Android phones, Google or Microsoft identities, and any shared business accounts.
- Measure the data you must keep online. Include photo libraries, project folders, shared files and growth over the next billing period; do not count a provider’s free allowance as permanent backup by itself.
- Specify collaboration needs. Decide whether simultaneous editing, comments, shared drives, public links or simple folder sharing is essential.
- Set a recovery requirement. Compare deleted-file windows and version-history periods with how long you may take to notice corruption or an accidental overwrite.
- Check privacy and administration requirements. Read the selected plan’s encryption, sharing, audit, retention and account-recovery documentation instead of general marketing descriptions.
- Calculate the real cost for a fixed period. Use the same 12-, 24- or 36-month horizon, identify annual versus monthly billing, and include bundles, minimum users and promotional expiry.
- Test migration before cancelling Dropbox. Copy a representative folder, open files on each device, check shared links and confirm that version history and offline files behave as expected.
Considering a NAS instead?
A network-attached storage (NAS) device is physical hardware that you buy, configure and maintain. It can provide local file access and a backup target, but it introduces drive failures, firmware updates, remote-access configuration, power and network dependence, and responsibility for off-site copies. It is therefore not automatically equivalent to hosted Dropbox synchronization.
