When X (formerly Twitter) shows no image, a tiny thumbnail, or an old image, the cause is usually in the page’s final HTML, the selected card type, image accessibility, or cached preview data. Check the HTML actually delivered to an unauthenticated visitor, verify the card and image tags, make sure the image can be fetched publicly, and then retest after allowing for caching.
Start with the four checks that solve most missing-image previews
- Inspect the served page. View the exact URL people share and inspect its rendered
<head>or fetched source. A value saved in a CMS field is irrelevant if a theme, plugin, redirect, or cache changes the final HTML. - Confirm the requested layout.
summaryproduces a small card;summary_large_imagerequests the prominent image layout. - Test the image URL from outside your logged-in environment. It must be an absolute URL that a crawler can retrieve without a session, VPN, firewall exception, or human interaction.
- Separate a code problem from a stale preview. If the current page serves the corrected tags but an already-shared post still shows the old card, platform caching may be involved. There is no verified current cache duration or guaranteed refresh procedure.
Inspect the final metadata, not just your CMS settings
Open the canonical URL that is actually shared. In a browser, use View Source and developer tools; from a shell, fetch the response without your normal cookies:
curl -L -s https://example.com/article | sed -n '1,160p'
Search the returned HTML for the card and Open Graph tags. A large-image card normally has a set similar to this:
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Article title">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="A concise description.">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/images/article.jpg">
<meta property="og:title" content="Article title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
Look for duplicate or conflicting tags
SEO plugins, themes, page builders, and custom templates can each emit their own title, description, or image. Multiple values make diagnosis difficult and can cause a crawler to use a value you did not intend. Keep one authoritative set, then fix the CMS or template that generates it rather than appending another set in a second location.

Remember which tag controls what
The twitter:card tag selects the layout. It has no Open Graph equivalent. Twitter-specific title, description, and image values may fall back to Open Graph values when the platform-specific versions are absent, as described by ogimage.info, but fallback does not choose a large or small card for you.
Choose the card type deliberately
| Card value | Expected presentation | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
summary |
Small thumbnail beside the text | You intentionally want a compact link card |
summary_large_image |
Large image above or beside the text | The image is the main visual for the shared page |
If your complaint is “the image is tiny,” the page may be working exactly as configured with summary. Change the value to summary_large_image, publish the resulting HTML, and then test the exact shared URL. Do not infer a metadata failure solely from a small thumbnail.
Make the image fetchable by an unauthenticated crawler
An image cannot appear if the crawler cannot retrieve it. Use a complete HTTPS URL such as https://cdn.example.com/images/story.jpg, not a relative path such as /images/story.jpg or a URL that only works inside your application.

Check the response directly
curl -L -I https://cdn.example.com/images/story.jpg
Look for a successful final response, an image content type, and a redirect chain that does not end at a login page or an access-denied response. Test from a network that is not allowed by your office firewall or staging VPN. Also check:

- A web application firewall, bot rule, geo-block, or rate limit is not denying crawler requests.
robots.txtand page-level directives are not intentionally restricting access needed for your deployment.- The image URL does not redirect through a private preview host.
- The server returns the image itself rather than an HTML error document with an image-like filename.
Fix access at the origin, CDN, or security layer. Changing only the meta tag will not help if the target response remains inaccessible.
Use sensible image dimensions without treating third-party guidance as an official mandate
og-image.org’s guide, updated for 2024, recommends 1,200 × 630 pixels for a large image card and discusses file formats and size limits. Those exact limits were not confirmed against current official organic-card documentation, so treat 1,200 × 630 as a practical recommendation rather than a verified X requirement. Export a clear raster image, keep the important text away from edges, and make sure the server’s response is stable and reasonably small.

If an image is technically reachable but extremely large, slow, corrupted, or served with an unexpected content type, replace it with a clean test image at the same public URL. That isolates delivery problems from design problems. Do not claim that a particular byte limit or format is mandatory unless you have current platform documentation for the account and card surface you are using.
Handle stale previews carefully
Preview systems cache fetched metadata and images. A corrected page can therefore continue to display an older card for a while. First verify that a fresh request to the shared URL now returns the corrected tags and image. If the live HTML is still wrong, fix deployment, CDN, or cache invalidation rather than waiting.
When the live HTML is correct, allow for platform caching and test in a current composer or another controlled preview surface if available. ogimage.info describes trying a changed URL when stale data persists, but the current X cache lifetime and whether URL variation always refreshes a card are not independently verified. Treat that technique as a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed purge mechanism. The legacy Card Validator’s current availability and behavior were also not verified, so do not make it your only test.

End-to-end repair procedure
- Identify the exact URL. Include the protocol, host, path, and any meaningful query string used in the post. A redirect can send the crawler to a different page whose metadata you have not edited.
- Fetch the unauthenticated response. Use View Source or
curl -Land confirm the final document contains one intended set of card tags. - Set the layout. Use
summary_large_imagefor a prominent image or retainsummarywhen a small thumbnail is intentional. - Replace relative image references. Set
twitter:imageand, when used,og:imageto the same absolute HTTPS URL. - Test the image independently. Follow redirects with
curl -L -Iand resolve any authentication, firewall, robots, WAF, or CDN issue. - Remove conflicts. Disable or reconfigure duplicate metadata emitted by plugins, templates, or a reverse proxy.
- Publish and purge your own caches. Clear the CMS page cache and CDN object if they are serving an old HTML document. Re-fetch the URL to verify the change.
- Retest the platform preview. If only an old post remains stale, record that the current page is correct and allow for external caching instead of repeatedly changing working metadata.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No image and no obvious card | Missing tags, malformed HTML, or an inaccessible page | Inspect the final response and add one valid card tag set. |
| Small thumbnail when a large image was expected | twitter:card is summary |
Change it to summary_large_image and verify the served HTML. |
| Image works in your browser but not in the preview | Login, cookies, firewall, bot protection, or a private redirect | Fetch the image without credentials from an external network and adjust access rules. |
| Old image after a replacement | Cached metadata or image, or an upstream cache still serving old HTML | Verify the live response, purge caches you control, then allow for external caching. |
| Unexpected title or image | Duplicate tags or Open Graph fallback | Remove competing tags and make the intended Twitter and Open Graph values explicit. |
| Preview differs between tools or accounts | Different cached fetches or rendering surfaces | Compare the current unauthenticated HTML first; do not treat one stale surface as proof that the page is still wrong. |
Check the page that is actually shared
Canonicalization matters. If people share a shortened URL, tracking URL, HTTP version, or redirected path, inspect that exact address and every redirect target. A perfectly configured article URL cannot control a different destination’s metadata.
Also distinguish organic link previews from advertising setup. X Business’s Twitter Website Tag Troubleshooting Guide is an official resource for website-tag and advertising scenarios; its existence does not establish that every instruction in it is the current rule for organic link cards.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture the corrected page after you have verified its metadata, without maintaining your own headless-browser workflow. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those cleanup steps can be disabled individually. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can two people see different cards for the same URL?
Yes. Cached fetches, account surfaces, and rendering timing can differ. Compare the current unauthenticated HTML and image response before assuming the page metadata changed.
Is changing the image filename a guaranteed cache purge?
No. A new URL can be a useful diagnostic, but current X cache behavior and refresh timing are not guaranteed by the available documentation.
Should I rely on Open Graph tags alone?
Open Graph values may provide fallback title, description, and image data, but they do not select the card layout. Set twitter:card explicitly when the layout matters.
