To check the image people may see when they share your website, paste the page’s public URL into an Open Graph or social-card checker. Inspect the page’s og:image value, confirm that the image URL loads, and review the checker’s preview. Then use the destination platform’s own debugger or inspector, where available, to check its scrape and refresh its cached card. A third-party preview can be a useful simulation without showing the image currently cached by Facebook, LinkedIn, or another service.
What “website thumbnail” means when you share a link
In this context, a website thumbnail is the image displayed in a link preview or social card when someone shares a page. It is usually selected from metadata published in the page’s HTML, especially the Open Graph og:image property. Social platforms may also use platform-specific metadata, including Twitter Card image fields.
The thumbnail can differ from the page’s logo, first visible image, or browser tab icon. A checker can show which image URL it finds and render a sample card, but that sample is not automatically proof of what a particular platform currently serves. Platforms may keep their own scraped copy or apply their own display rules.
Check a page’s thumbnail online
- Use the public page URL. Enter the exact page you intend to share into a URL-based Open Graph or social-preview checker. Check the final, canonical page address rather than assuming the site homepage’s metadata applies to every article or product page.
- Inspect the fetched metadata. Look for
og:imageand, if reported, Twitter Card image metadata. Note the image URL the checker actually fetched, not just the preview picture. - Check that the image resolves. Open the reported image URL or use the checker’s image-loading result, if provided. A correct-looking metadata value is not enough if the asset does not load for a crawler.
- Review the simulated card. Check whether the crop, subject, text, and overall appearance make sense at the preview size. A mock card is useful for spotting obvious problems, but it may not reproduce the target platform’s current cached version.
- Verify on the destination platform. If available, use that platform’s own debugger or inspector for platform-specific results and cache refresh. Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector are examples cited by the sources; availability and behavior can change.
- Recheck after a change. If you update metadata or replace the image, fetch the page again with the checker and use the destination platform’s tool to see whether it has scraped the changed page.
What to look for in the checker results
Do not stop at whether the sample image looks right. The result should help you distinguish a metadata problem from an inaccessible asset or a platform cache issue.

| Check | What to inspect | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Fetched page | Is the intended public page URL being checked? | A checker may be showing metadata for a different address or page than the one you plan to share. |
| Open Graph image | Which URL is reported for og:image? |
This reveals the image URL the fetched metadata points to. |
| Platform-specific image metadata | Does the checker report Twitter Card fields or other card metadata? | It can help identify cases where a platform may have separate image instructions. |
| Image load and dimensions | Does the image load, and does the tool report its dimensions? | A broken or unsuitable asset can undermine an otherwise correct metadata tag. |
| Preview type | Is the card a checker-rendered mock or a platform scrape? | A mock can demonstrate how parsed tags might look; a platform tool is more relevant to that platform’s scrape and cache. |
| Refresh/debug option | Does the destination platform provide a tool to inspect or refresh its scrape? | Use it for platform-specific follow-up when available. |
Why the checker preview may not match the shared post
A third-party checker generally fetches a page and uses the metadata it finds to produce a report or simulated card. OGForge explicitly distinguishes its mockup from the target platform’s cached card. That distinction matters: a mock can show that the tags currently fetched point to the intended image, while a social app may still show a previously scraped version or render the information differently.
When the checker looks right but a live share does not, compare results using the destination platform’s debugger or inspector, if it offers one. When both show the wrong image, investigate the page metadata and image URL first. When the checker cannot fetch the page or image, fix accessibility before interpreting the mockup as a valid preview.

Fix a wrong, missing, or outdated thumbnail
The checker reports the wrong image
- Inspect the fetched page’s
og:imagevalue and any reported platform-specific image fields. - Update the metadata for the exact page being shared; changing the homepage does not necessarily change an article page’s tags.
- Fetch the page again after publishing the change, then check the destination platform’s inspector where available.
The image is missing or will not load
- Open the image URL shown in the checker and confirm that it resolves to the intended asset.
- Confirm that the page and image are reachable to the checker’s crawler. A URL that works only for a logged-in visitor may not be fetchable by a social preview service.
- Use the checker’s metadata and loading details, if offered, to separate a missing tag from an image-fetch failure.
The image is stale only on one platform
If the page checker finds the new metadata but a platform still shows an old card, use that platform’s own debugger or inspector when available to request or inspect a fresh scrape. A generic checker’s mock cannot establish that the platform cache has changed.
The image appears cropped or awkward
Preview the image as a small card, not only at full size. Keep the key subject and any necessary text in a composition that tolerates cropping and reduced display size. OpenGraph.dev recommends 1200×630 pixels as vendor guidance; that is not a guarantee that every platform uses identical dimensions or renders the image the same way. Check the destination platform’s result for the particular share.

Choose a checker that answers the right question
OpenGraph.dev, OpenGraph Check, OGForge, and PageGlass are among the checker services surfaced by the cited sources. The available source material describes their tools but does not establish an independent comparative test or an objectively best checker. Choose based on the task you need to complete:
- To check a published page: choose a tool that fetches a supplied URL and reports the parsed tags, rather than one that only previews values you type in manually.
- To diagnose a broken image: look for image-loading status and dimensions, not just a rendered card.
- To see a platform-like layout: check which platforms the service simulates, and treat the rendered result as a preview unless it explicitly identifies a live platform scrape.
- To confirm a platform’s cached result: use that platform’s own debugger or inspector where one is available.
Or skip the browser setup
If your next step is to capture the actual page as an image or PDF—not to inspect its social-card cache—ScreenshotNeo can return a page screenshot from one GET request. A screenshot is useful for checking the page’s visible appearance, but it does not replace an Open Graph checker or a destination platform’s cache debugger.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Checker shows no image tag | The fetched page does not expose the expected image metadata, or the checker did not fetch the intended page. | Confirm the URL and inspect the page’s reported metadata; add or correct the page’s image metadata, then fetch again. |
| Tag is present but image preview is broken | The image URL does not resolve for the checker. | Open the reported URL and confirm that the asset is publicly fetchable. |
| Mock preview is right, shared card is old | The destination platform may be using a cached scrape. | Use the destination platform’s debugger or inspector where available. |
| Image looks different on different platforms | Platforms can handle card images differently. | Check each relevant destination’s own preview tool when available; do not assume one mock guarantees identical rendering. |
| Checker result seems unrelated to the page | The submitted address may redirect or be a different URL from the one intended for sharing. | Verify the exact public URL and inspect the page the checker reports as fetched. |
Practical image guidance
OpenGraph.dev gives 1200×630 pixels as a broadly safe image recommendation. Treat that as vendor advice, not a universal platform specification: platform handling can differ, and a checker’s preview may not reproduce every crop or display size. The practical test is to inspect the image at card scale, verify that it loads, and check the destination platform’s own output where possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a social-preview checker show the exact card already cached by Facebook or LinkedIn?
Not necessarily. A third-party checker may render a mock from metadata it fetches. Use the destination platform’s own debugger or inspector, where available, for its scrape and cache.
Is 1200×630 the required size for every social thumbnail?
No universal requirement is established here. OpenGraph.dev recommends 1200×630 pixels as guidance, but platform handling can differ.

A screenshot API captures a page’s visible appearance; it is not a substitute for an Open Graph checker or the destination platform’s cache debugger.
