Why TikTok Called iOS 18 a “Cheater’s Paradise”—and What Apple’s App-Hiding Feature Really Does

iOS 18 lets users lock or hide selected apps, prompting “cheater” claims on TikTok. The feature is real, but it is a general privacy tool—not a secret cheating mode—and hidden apps are not completely undetectable.

In June 2024, some TikTok creators and other social-media commenters branded iOS 18 a “cheater’s paradise” after Apple showed that selected iPhone apps could be locked or hidden. The controls are real and can conceal a dating app from ordinary views, but they are general privacy features—not an Apple-described cheating mode. Several more dramatic claims about the update were unsupported.

Here is what iOS 18 actually changed, what remains discoverable, and why a hidden app is not proof of infidelity.

What Apple added in iOS 18

Apple introduced iOS 18 at WWDC on June 10, 2024. One of its privacy changes lets users require authentication before opening individual apps. Depending on the app and device, authentication can use Face ID, Touch ID or the iPhone passcode.

Option What happens
Require Face ID The app icon remains visible, but opening the app requires authentication.
Hide and Require Face ID The app is locked and removed from the Home Screen and ordinary search surfaces. It is accessed through a Face ID-protected Hidden folder in the App Library.

AppleInsider’s instructions describe the usual path as pressing and holding an app icon, choosing Require Face ID or, where offered, Hide and Require Face ID, and confirming the choice. To retrieve a hidden app, swipe to the App Library, open Hidden and authenticate. Menu wording can vary by app and iOS point release.

Hidden-app content is excluded from ordinary notification previews and Spotlight-style search in the documented behavior. Not every app supports both options: some can be locked but not hidden, and AppleInsider specifically reports that the Passwords app can be locked but not hidden.

Feature details and the reported user path are documented by AppleInsider.

Why dating apps became the focus

The viral argument was straightforward: someone could hide Tinder, Bumble or another dating app, hand over an unlocked iPhone, and make a quick Home Screen inspection less revealing. AppleInsider described social-media phrases including “cheater’s paradise” and linked the discussion to secret dating profiles.

  • Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.

That scenario explains the reaction, but it does not show that Apple designed the feature for infidelity. The same control can protect a banking, health, work or messaging app when another person temporarily uses an unlocked phone.

Which viral claims were unsupported?

No automatic “wrong face” hiding

Posts described a system that would recognize an unfamiliar face and automatically lock or hide apps. The available coverage characterizes that claim as invented or unsupported. iOS 18’s documented behavior is user-controlled: the owner selects an app and enables authentication.

No secret message counters

Other posts claimed the update added sent-message or reply counters intended to help someone manage concealed conversations. Those claims were also reported as unsupported, not as documented iOS 18 functions.

No evidence Apple traded hardware improvements for “cheater” tools

Claims that Apple chose app hiding instead of improving the camera, adding storage or making unrelated hardware changes are commentary, not evidence about Apple’s product decisions.

The June 14, 2024 AppleInsider report describes these allegations and the social-media reaction; it does not establish a comprehensive audit of every viral post. The defensible conclusion is narrower: app locking and hiding are real, while the sensational automatic-detection and message-counter stories were not supported by the documented feature.

What hiding an app does—and does not—hide

Hiding reduces casual visibility; it is not forensic erasure. The app remains associated with the device and can be opened by the owner from the authenticated Hidden folder. AppleInsider also notes that hidden apps can still appear in some Settings locations.

  • It does not delete the app’s data or account.
  • It does not erase purchase records, cloud records or activity on another logged-in device.
  • It does not necessarily remove notifications or traces that may exist on other hardware.
  • It does not defeat someone who knows the device passcode or otherwise has authorized access.

For those reasons, a visible-app check cannot establish that an iPhone contains no hidden apps, while the existence of a hidden app cannot establish what its owner did, with whom or when.

  • Protecting banking, health and workplace apps when lending an unlocked phone.
  • Keeping dating, LGBTQ+ or medical apps private from family members, roommates or hostile acquaintances.
  • Reducing accidental exposure of sensitive messages and accounts.
  • Preventing children or friends from opening work apps, changing settings or tampering with profiles.
  • Adding a privacy barrier for activists, journalists and people facing harassment or device inspection.

These are privacy improvements, not guarantees. A person dealing with coercive monitoring should also consider the security of the passcode, Apple Account and other logged-in devices.

Is this unique to Apple?

No. Comparable app-hiding capabilities existed on some Android devices before iOS 18. Android behavior differs by manufacturer, Android version and interface, so it is inaccurate to claim that every Android phone works identically. Apple’s change brought a similar concept into the standard iPhone experience; it did not invent the general idea of hiding apps.

AppleInsider made that comparison in its coverage of the backlash: https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/06/14/ios-18-isnt-any-more-of-a-cheaters-operating-system-than-android-has-been.

What the controversy means for relationships

A hidden dating app may be relevant context in a relationship, but it is not conclusive evidence of cheating. Someone may hide an app for identity, sexuality, medical privacy, family surveillance or protection from harassment. Conversely, a person trying to investigate a phone should not assume that the visible Home Screen is a complete inventory.

Demands for unrestricted device inspection can also create a separate consent and safety issue. iOS 18’s controls cannot determine guilt or innocence; they only change how easily selected apps are seen by someone who has access to an unlocked device.

Bottom line

iOS 18 added a practical privacy control with obvious dual-use potential. Users can lock selected apps or move supported apps into a Face ID-protected Hidden folder, which can make dating apps less conspicuous. Some viral posts inflated that capability into an automatic “cheater” system, but the documented feature does not recognize an “unauthorized” face, count secret replies or prove anything about a person’s behavior. The 2024 controversy was therefore about how a legitimate privacy tool might be misused—not evidence that Apple built iOS 18 for cheaters.
