Investors’ demand for the Swiss franc rose during a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in 2026, putting upward pressure on the currency. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) linked that pressure to tensions and escalation in the Middle East, but said in June it had subsequently abated. The franc’s rise is therefore best understood as a dated episode, not a claim that it was still strengthening on October 7, 2026.
Why safe-haven demand can lift the franc
When uncertainty rises, some investors move money into currencies they regard as dependable stores of value. Switzerland’s perceived political and economic stability, together with the franc’s safe-haven reputation, can attract that demand. More buying can push the franc higher against other currencies.

The SNB says investors may be willing to hold francs even when returns are lower than those available in other currencies. That helps explain why interest rates are not the only influence on exchange rates: perceived safety can matter alongside the return an investor earns.

What drove the 2026 episode—and what happened next
In its March 2026 policy discussion, the SNB linked franc appreciation pressure to geopolitical tensions and the escalation in the Middle East. The bank also discussed energy prices and inflation expectations in the broader market environment. Its account supports saying that the conflict contributed to upward pressure; it does not quantify how much of a particular exchange-rate move came from safe-haven buying. By June, the SNB said the upward pressure, which had initially increased significantly with the escalation, had abated. It also described the franc as having depreciated somewhat against the euro and US dollar since its March assessment. The sequence matters: an initial lift amid heightened uncertainty, then easing pressure as the situation and risk sentiment changed. SNB June 2026 discussion summary
The SNB’s September 24, 2026 assessment described the franc as having weakened in the context of its inflation forecast. It left its policy rate at 0% and said it remained willing to intervene in foreign-exchange markets as necessary to ensure appropriate monetary conditions. That later assessment is another reason not to read “lifted” as a description of the franc’s direction on October 7. SNB policy assessment, September 24, 2026

Other influences on the exchange rate
Interest-rate differences
Swiss interest rates often tend to be lower than rates elsewhere, reflecting factors that include low inflation and Switzerland’s political and economic stability. Lower returns can weigh on demand for francs, while safe-haven demand can support it. These are distinct influences; a geopolitical headline does not explain every franc movement.

The SNB has used foreign-exchange transactions in different directions under different policy conditions. After 2007, safe-haven demand contributed to upward pressure, and the SNB bought foreign currency over several years to slow appreciation and counter the risk that already-low inflation would fall further. In 2022 and 2023, it sold foreign currency, increasing demand for francs and allowing some appreciation to help curb imported price increases. Inflation differences
A nominal exchange-rate move does not tell the whole story about purchasing power. The SNB noted that real appreciation from 2021 to 2023 was less pronounced than nominal moves suggested because prices rose more sharply abroad than in Switzerland. Comparing currencies over time therefore requires considering inflation in both countries, not just the quoted exchange rate. SNB explanation of exchange rates
What a stronger franc means for prices and businesses
Other things equal, a stronger franc lowers the franc cost of imported goods and services. That can restrain imported inflation, one reason the SNB may consider exchange-rate movements in setting monetary conditions. A stronger franc can also reduce the franc value of exporters’ receipts earned in foreign currencies. The actual effect depends on factors including contract terms, pricing, and inflation differences.

- The Switzerland 1 Franc featuring Standing Helvetia was issued from 1875 through 1967 and became one of the longest-running coin designs in Swiss history. Introduced during the era of the modern Swiss Federal State, the coin reflected the nation's commitment to stability, neutrality, and unity. For generations, it served as an everyday piece of Swiss commerce while becoming an enduring symbol of the country's identity and artistic tradition.
- The obverse portrays Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland, standing confidently while holding a spear and supporting a shield bearing the Swiss cross. Surrounding her are 22 stars representing the cantons that formed the Swiss Confederation at the time the design was introduced. Created by designer Albert Walch and engraved by Antoine Bovy, the composition embodies the values of independence, preparedness, and national unity.
- The reverse displays the denomination within an elegant wreath formed from oak leaves and alpine rose branches tied together with a ribbon. The oak symbolizes strength and endurance, while the alpine rose reflects Switzerland's mountainous landscape and natural heritage. The clean, balanced design has remained one of the most recognizable motifs in Swiss numismatic history and showcases the refined style for which Swiss coinage is renowned.
- Struck at the historic Bern Mint from .835 fine silver containing 16.5% copper, the coin weighs 5 grams and measures 23.3 millimeters in diameter with a reeded edge. Its combination of precious metal content, timeless allegorical imagery, and exceptional minting quality has made the Standing Helvetia 1 Franc one of the most admired classic silver coins produced by Switzerland.
The SNB’s September 24, 2026 release said Swiss inflation had risen from 0.6% in May to 0.8% in August, mainly because of higher oil-product prices. It forecast average annual inflation of 0.7% for 2026 and 0.8% for each of 2027 and 2028, conditional on the policy rate remaining at 0% over the forecast horizon. These figures describe Swiss inflation and the SNB’s forecast, not the scale of safe-haven flows.

How to check whether the franc is rising now
Exchange-rate direction depends on the currency pair and time period. A franc can rise against the euro while moving differently against the US dollar, so specify the comparison rather than saying it is simply “up.” The SNB data portal provides dated observations; monthly averages are not live quotes. Its September 2026 monthly averages, shown in a search result updated October 1, were CHF 0.9431 per EUR 1 and CHF 0.8193 per USD 1. Those values summarize that month and should not be treated as October 7 spot rates. SNB data portal: exchange rates

- In 1967, the price of silver soared steeply, reaching 260 francs per kilogram in August and 350 francs per kilogram in March 1968. At this time, the melt value of the 1/2 franc pieces was circa 0.73 francs. Switzerland started to experience a severe shortage of cash, especially in the north, where people were illegally exporting coins to Germany to be melted. In spite of strict measures against hoarding and melting coins, it is estimated that around 100 tonnes of silver in Swiss francs melted
- The obverse of the coin includes the Latin script with the inscription "5 FR CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA B," designed by Max Weber. The reverse features a woman standing with her left hand raised and holding a bowl in her right hand, with two wounded soldiers lying behind her, forming a cross with the three figures. The inscriptions "1863 1963" and "WEBER" are also present. The edge of the coin has embossed lettering.

The same portal showed a 10-year Swiss Confederation bond yield of 0.556% as of October 5, 2026, in data updated October 6. A bond yield is not an exchange rate, but it can help readers distinguish interest-rate conditions from currency performance.
