If you want Apple Intelligence on an entry-level iPad and can wait, holding off may make sense: reporting points to a possible first-half 2027 refresh with a newer chip. Apple has not announced that iPad, however, and reports disagree on its processor. If you need a tablet now and the current model meets your needs, the iPad (A16) is the confirmed option.
What you can buy now: iPad (A16)
Apple identifies the iPad (A16) as a model introduced in 2025 and still lists it in its iPad comparison tool. Its published specifications include an A16 chip, a 10.86-inch viewable diagonal display, and storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Apple’s iPad (A16) technical specifications and iPad comparison page are the references for those confirmed details.

Apple lists the model as compatible with iPadOS 26 in its iPadOS compatibility guide. It supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging, so it is not a simple plug-and-play choice.

A July 16, 2026 report from MacRumors, summarizing Mark Gurman’s reporting, said updated entry-level iPad, Air, and Pro models were expected in the first half of 2027. It reported conflicting processor possibilities for the base iPad: Gurman had cited A18, while Macworld’s Filipe Espósito reported A19. MacRumors said either chip could enable Apple Intelligence. These are reports about an unreleased product, not Apple-confirmed specifications. MacRumors’ July 16 report covers the forecast and the disagreement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Timing expectations have shifted. A May 1, 2026 MacRumors article said a successor was not expected in the fiscal quarter ending June 27, 2026, while allowing that a later 2026 launch was possible at the time. The later first-half-2027 forecast is also only a forecast, not a launch commitment. The May report reflects the earlier outlook.
Apple has not announced the successor or confirmed its name, release date, processor, memory, design, or price in the cited sources. In particular, do not treat either A18 or A19 as settled, or assume the next iPad will cost the same as the current one.

Apple Intelligence is the clearest reason to consider waiting
The May 2026 MacRumors report says the current base iPad’s A16 chip does not support Apple Intelligence. That distinction is supported by the report, not stated on Apple’s technical-specification page. The rumored next model may support Apple Intelligence if it uses A18 or A19, but that capability remains unconfirmed until Apple announces the product. MacRumors’ May 2026 report discusses the current model and the possibility of a successor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Apple Intelligence is central to what you want from a tablet, buying the A16 now means accepting that limitation; waiting keeps open the possibility of a compatible model. If you do not need those features, the rumor alone is a weaker reason to postpone a purchase.

Buy now or wait? Compare the trade-offs
| Decision | What is established | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Buy iPad (A16) now | Apple lists a real model with published specifications, three storage configurations, and iPadOS 26 compatibility. | Check the live local price and availability when buying; no current price is established here. |
| Wait for the successor | July 2026 reporting points to a possible first-half-2027 refresh and a newer chip. | Apple has not confirmed the date, final specifications, Apple Intelligence support, or price; reports conflict on whether the chip will be A18 or A19. |
Make the decision around your timing and workload
Buy the iPad (A16) if you need a tablet now
It is the sensible choice when you need a device before the reported release window, its A16 hardware and storage options suit your tasks, and Apple Intelligence is not a deciding requirement. Check Apple’s current comparison page and your local retailers for the actual price rather than relying on an older report or an assumed discount.
Wait if Apple Intelligence matters and you can defer the purchase
Waiting is most defensible when you can tolerate an uncertain timeline in exchange for the possibility of a newer chip and Apple Intelligence support. The reported first-half-2027 timing is not guaranteed, and the eventual price could differ from today’s.

Do not wait solely for an assumed performance jump or bargain
The available reports do not establish measured performance gains, a design change, a price reduction, or any feature beyond the rumored newer chip and possible Apple Intelligence support. Base the choice on what the current iPad can do for you and the cost of going without a tablet while you wait.
