Plants germinate and flower in a brief, patchy burst—not because the desert has permanently become wetter, but because a rare supply of water lets ephemeral vegetation grow.
How rain turns dormant plants into a desert bloom
Many Atacama plants survive long dry periods in dormant forms, including seeds and bulbs. When enough rain reaches a location, moisture can trigger germination, followed by rapid growth and flowering. The resulting flush is temporary: once available water is used up and conditions dry again, the flowers fade.

A 2019 remote-sensing study characterized bloom events in relation to precipitation accumulated over the 2 to 12 months before and during them. That window helps explain why a bloom is not necessarily an instant response to a single shower. It does not establish one rainfall amount or schedule that applies everywhere.
Why the bloom varies from place to place
The Atacama is vast, and rainfall is uneven. A wet spell can affect some areas more than others, so blooms differ in location, timing, intensity and duration. The size and character of a flowering area also depend on the plants present and how they respond to the water they receive. There is no reliable universal calendar or rainfall threshold for predicting a desert-wide bloom.

A local example shows why site-specific evidence matters. At coastal Alto Patache in Tarapacá, a 2017 field study recorded 50 mm of rain in the extreme event of August 2015, compared with an annual average of 1 mm at that site. Researchers documented germination afterward. These figures describe Alto Patache; they are not a general trigger for the Atacama. The study also considered fog capture in the area, but it does not establish fog as the cause of the broad desert bloom.
What grows when the desert flowers
Chile’s government describes more than 200 plant species germinating and flowering during the Desierto Florido, or “flowering desert.” The burst includes ephemeral herbaceous plants and some woody species. The 2022 scientific review highlights Cistanthe longiscapa as a prominent part of the ephemeral landscape and examines how flower coloration relates to ecological and evolutionary processes.
Common names and local distributions can vary. A flower seen in one blooming area should not be assumed to occur throughout the desert.
How climate patterns influence rare rainfall
Climate patterns help shape rainfall variability in the region. A 2022 review discusses the influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on rainfall from year to year, as well as longer-term Pacific variability associated with the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation. These patterns provide context for why unusually wet periods occur; they do not mean every bloom has the same cause or that El Niño alone explains every event.

What is known about the 2026 bloom
In a report published October 1, 2026, the Associated Press said heavy rains earlier in the year had enabled a historic bloom. Citing estimates from Chile’s forestry agency, CONAF, the report put the affected area at about 17,000 square kilometers and said the event was projected to be the most extensive and intense since 1997. Those are attributed estimates and projections, not a ground-truth measurement independently established here.
The AP report also quoted CONAF Atacama biodiversity official César Pizarro describing record-level July and August rainfall of 160, 180 and 190 millimeters in some locations. Those figures apply to the locations he described, not to the whole desert. Pizarro attributed the current event to a “super El Niño”; that is his explanation of the 2026 event, not a general scientific conclusion about all flowering-desert events.
The 2026 figures illustrate how unusually wet conditions can produce a striking, extensive bloom. The underlying mechanism remains the same: accumulated water reaches dormant plants and enables them to grow and flower.
