Telomeres are protective DNA-protein structures at the ends of chromosomes. They generally lose some DNA as cells divide, and when they become critically short, a cell may stop dividing or die. That makes telomeres a useful way to understand one limit on cell growth—but not a precise, uniform countdown: outcomes vary, and some cells evade the limit.
What telomeres do
Chromosomes carry genetic information, and telomeres help protect their ends and preserve chromosome stability. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) compares their role to protective caps. The familiar shoelace-tip analogy is useful: a cap helps keep an end from fraying, but a telomere is made of DNA and associated proteins, not plastic.

When a cell divides, it copies its DNA. Telomeres generally lose a small amount of DNA in the process, as the NCI explains in its Telomere Molecular Epidemiology overview. This is a general tendency, not an identical loss at every division in every cell. Telomere shortening is also associated with aging, but it does not make an individual telomere or a person’s total telomere length a precise clock.
What happens when telomeres become critically short?
There is no single guaranteed response. Critically short telomeres can prompt cellular senescence, a state in which a cell stops growing and dividing. They can also contribute to cellular crisis, in which outcomes may include apoptosis (programmed cell death) or genomic instability. These are related possibilities, not two inevitable options that every cell chooses between. The NCI describes the range of outcomes in its overview of telomere biology.

Senescence: growth arrest
A senescent cell remains alive but no longer divides. In its discussion of cancer and aging, the NCI calls senescence an efficient protective mechanism because it can force would-be cancer cells to stop dividing. The safeguard is not infallible: some cells bypass natural limits and continue dividing.
Apoptosis: programmed cell death
Apoptosis is one possible outcome when a cell is damaged or under stress. It is not accurate to say that critically short telomeres always make a cell self-destruct; senescence and other outcomes are possible too.

Genomic instability: a risk if cells keep dividing
Telomere dysfunction can contribute to genomic instability. If a cell with unstable chromosomes continues dividing rather than entering senescence or dying, that instability can create conditions that contribute to cancer. The relationship is therefore protective but conditional: stopping damaged cells can restrain growth, while failure to stop them can be harmful.

How cancer cells can get around the limit
For a cell lineage to keep dividing, it must address the loss of telomere DNA. Telomerase is an enzyme that adds DNA to telomeres and helps maintain them; the NCI says cancer cells usually have more telomerase than most normal cells. See the NCI Dictionary’s definition of telomerase.

Telomerase is not the only route. An NCI Center for Cancer Research article in its 2022 milestones series reports that about 10 percent of cancers maintain telomeres without telomerase, attributing the estimate to senior investigator Eros Lazzerini Denchi. The article notes that many of these cancers are particularly aggressive; the figure is an NCI-reported estimate, not a universal rate for every cancer classification. Telomere shortening is one part of cell biology, not a standalone cancer forecast or a precise measure of how long a person will live. Inherited telomere biology disorders can involve abnormally short telomeres, as described by the NCI’s Telomere Biology Disorders resource. That clinical context is different from using an ordinary telomere measurement to predict an individual’s cancer risk.

The core idea is simpler: telomeres help protect chromosome ends; they generally shorten as cells divide; critically short telomeres can stop division or contribute to cell death and instability. That limit can help suppress cancer, but cancer cells may evolve ways around it.
