Technical cleaning belongs in a data centre reliability strategy because dust and other contamination can threaten hardware reliability, while poorly controlled cleaning can itself disrupt operations. It is one part of contamination control—not a guarantee against outages—and it works best alongside source reduction, filtration, monitoring, and documented work controls.
Why does data centre cleaning matter?
Contamination control is a reliability concern, not just a housekeeping task. ASHRAE’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers states: “It is incumbent upon data center managers to do their part in maintaining hardware reliability by monitoring and controlling dust and gaseous contamination in their data centers.”

Dust can accumulate on surfaces and in airflow paths. Deposits may contribute to restricted airflow or cooling effectiveness, but cleaning alone does not establish or guarantee a particular reduction in failures. The reliability question is whether contaminants are present, where they come from, and which control is appropriate.

What counts as technical cleaning?
Technical cleaning is controlled cleaning in and around sensitive operational equipment. It can extend beyond visible floors to vertical and horizontal surfaces, plenum spaces, and underfloor areas. The scope should reflect the facility’s layout, contamination indicators, airflow, equipment instructions, and method of procedure (MOP).

Routine controlled cleaning
Routine work focuses on accessible areas and external surfaces, with methods chosen to avoid disturbing operating equipment or changing airflow unexpectedly. Uptime Institute advises against spraying liquid directly onto or into equipment, opening chassis, or removing fiber optics for general cleaning. Follow manufacturer instructions and the site MOP.
Deep cleaning
Deep cleaning may address accumulated particles, static, or residue on surfaces and in plenum or subfloor spaces. It requires planning for access, airflow, equipment protection, and debris capture. Uptime Institute recommends HEPA-filtered vacuums for deep cleaning so collected particles are not returned to supply air; that does not mean vacuuming powered equipment directly is appropriate.

How often should a data centre be cleaned?
There is no universal cleaning frequency established by the sources cited here. Uptime Institute describes schedules based on need, including annual or biannual whole-facility cleaning as examples, and more frequent attention to high-traffic areas. These are examples, not a rule for every site.

Can dust cause server overheating or failure?
Dust is a potential reliability risk, but its presence alone does not prove that a server will overheat or fail. Deposited particles may interfere with cooling conditions; actual impact depends on the equipment, airflow, contamination level, and other operating conditions. Cleaning is therefore a control measure, not a substitute for diagnosing temperature, airflow, or hardware issues.
ASHRAE’s current handbook chapter treats particulate and gaseous contamination as distinct concerns. It identifies hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, mercaptans, oxides of nitrogen, chlorine, and ozone as gaseous contaminants relevant to IT equipment reliability. It also notes that storing boxes or dirty equipment in a data room can accelerate filter clogging and reduce cooling effectiveness. Keep staging and storage from becoming avoidable contamination sources.

The combination of the 2 ensures low loss and high reliability of fiber optic connectors, and is widely used in communication operations, data centers, other scenarios
Should you clean under a raised floor?
Only when site conditions and a controlled procedure justify it. A raised-floor void can be part of the airflow path and can hold deposited material, but disturbing that material may redistribute it. Data Center Dynamics reporting describes risks from airflow changes, moisture, and uncontrolled polish or floor work in technical areas; this is practical industry reporting, not a universal standard.

How should cleaning fit with filtration and monitoring?
Cleaning removes contamination already deposited; filtration can capture particles entering or circulating through air; source control reduces contamination before it spreads. Monitoring helps determine which problem exists. ASHRAE’s 2011 guidance gives examples of continuously filtering room air with MERV 8 filters and incoming air with MERV 11 to MERV 13 filters. It also describes G1 gaseous-contamination criteria of copper reactivity below 300 Å per month and silver reactivity below 200 Å per month. These are dated guidance examples, not universal specifications: confirm current standard editions, site conditions, and equipment requirements before using them as design or operating criteria.
Particle measurements and corrosion monitoring answer different questions. A particle count does not establish the severity of gaseous contamination or corrosion. Select measurements aligned with the suspected contaminant, and use findings to choose among cleaning, filtration changes, or source controls. Likely sources to investigate include construction, equipment deliveries, doors, people, and outdoor air.
How do you control the risks of cleaning?
- Define the scope: identify the area, contamination concern, equipment boundaries, and whether the work is routine or deep cleaning.
- Use a documented MOP: coordinate access, timing, airflow considerations, equipment protection, and recovery steps with operations.
- Use suitable methods and trained workers: select equipment appropriate to the task; for deep cleaning, Uptime Institute recommends HEPA-filtered vacuums to limit particle reintroduction.
- Protect equipment: avoid direct liquid application, chassis opening, and unnecessary disturbance of cables or fibers; follow manufacturer directions.
- Control sources: manage construction debris, delivery staging, storage, and work practices that introduce dust.
- Validate the result: review relevant environmental observations or monitoring, and adjust controls if the suspected contamination persists.
In-house teams may know the site, security requirements, and equipment boundaries best. A specialist contractor may be better equipped for deep, underfloor, or plenum work. The decision should turn on competence, familiarity with the facility, ability to follow the MOP, and the risk of disrupting airflow or operations—not on a presumption that one staffing model is always safer.
Cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection are different
Cleaning removes soil or particles; sanitization and disinfection aim to reduce or inactivate microorganisms. The terms are not interchangeable, and routine whole-facility disinfection is not established as a present-day reliability requirement by the sources cited here. Uptime Institute’s 2020 pandemic analysis noted that disinfection can add cost and operational risk and that its protection may be temporary. Any such work should have a defined purpose and be evaluated against equipment and site procedures.
