Yes. A strong magnet or magnetic metal close to an iPhone’s rear camera can interfere with the sensors that help position the camera lens. Apple says this can reduce sensor accuracy and restrict lens movement, affecting optical image stabilization (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus on models and camera modules that support them.
How a nearby magnet can affect the camera
OIS helps counter camera movement: a gyroscope senses movement, and the lens shifts in response to reduce image motion. Closed-loop autofocus uses accelerometers to measure and compensate for gravity and vibration. Magnetic sensors track lens position so the camera can make those adjustments accurately.

A nearby magnetic field can interfere with the lens-position sensors or temporarily disable them. The camera may then have less accurate positioning information and a more limited range of lens movement. Photos may look blurry or less stable, and focusing or stabilization may be affected. Apple’s guidance describes interference with camera functions; it does not establish that every exposure causes permanent physical damage.

Which accessories can cause interference?
Apple warns about third-party accessories that put strong magnets or magnetizable metal plates near the rear camera. Examples include folio covers that latch magnetically, cases that join with magnets, and rigid mounts such as car mounts.

Apple’s advice is: “For the best camera performance, avoid accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera (or cameras).” A non-magnetic iPhone case is one category to consider if you want to avoid those components. Check the case’s construction and compatibility with your exact iPhone model; this is a practical interpretation of Apple’s advice, not a tested product recommendation.
Which iPhone cameras use OIS or closed-loop autofocus?
These features vary by iPhone model and camera module, so a magnetic accessory will not necessarily affect every rear camera in the same way. Apple lists the following coverage:

- Remove the possible source. Take off the case and detach magnetic mounts or other accessories near the rear camera.
- Check the camera again. See whether focus and stabilization improve without those accessories. Apple does not specify a universal recovery time or a camera-safe distance.
- Use Apple’s troubleshooting guidance if the issue remains. If the camera still does not work properly after removing the accessories, follow Apple’s steps for resolving iPhone camera problems.
Camera interference is different from medical-device guidance
Apple’s camera advice does not give a quantified magnetic-field threshold or a safe-distance measurement for cameras. Do not use the spacing instructions in Apple’s separate medical-device guidance as a camera-safe distance: those instructions address possible interference with implanted medical devices. If you have a pacemaker or defibrillator, consult your physician and the device manufacturer and follow Apple’s iPhone safety guidance.
