Why Steam for Linux Is x86_64-Focused—and What ARM Support Means for Games

Valve’s general Linux client is x86_64-focused, but Steam Frame is a separate Arm64 case. Here’s how Proton, FEX and Lepton affect game compatibility.

Valve’s general Steam for Linux client requirements specify an x86_64/AMD64 processor, but it would be inaccurate to say Valve has no ARM support: its Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame running SteamOS on an Arm64 chip. The distinction is scope. The standard Linux client requirements are x86_64-focused, while Steam Frame has a device-specific compatibility stack for ARM.

What does Valve officially support?

Valve’s current Steam for Linux Client README lists the latest Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS, a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 Linux kernel, and an x86_64/AMD64 processor. It also lists 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and 64-bit and 32-bit glibc; the README says glibc 2.31 or newer has been required since August 15, 2025. These are the requirements in the current README, not a statement that Steam can never run on ARM.

Separately, Valve’s Steamworks documentation for Steam Frame describes a device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip and Arch-based SteamOS. That device’s support does not establish general support for the standard Steam for Linux client on ARM Linux distributions. Valve’s published requirements do not give one explicit reason for the general client’s x86_64 requirement; the practical issue is the difference between processor architectures.

Why does ARM architecture matter?

ARM64 and x86_64 use different instruction sets. A program compiled for x86_64 does not automatically run natively on an ARM64 processor, or vice versa. To run an x86 game on ARM, a system needs a suitable translation or emulation layer; alternatively, the developer can provide a native ARM64 build. Even with architecture handled, the operating system, graphics support, and game-specific requirements must also work.

How Steam Frame’s compatibility layers differ

Valve describes separate technologies for different kinds of software on Steam Frame. They are not interchangeable, and their presence is not a promise that every game will run.

Technology What it is for What it does
Proton Windows games on Linux Valve describes Proton as a compatibility layer based on a modified version of Wine. It also uses graphics implementations such as DXVK to translate DirectX to Vulkan.
FEX 32-bit and 64-bit x86-compiled games on Arm64 Translates x86 instructions to Arm64 instructions. Valve says it forwards API calls to native host libraries such as OpenGL or Vulkan and uses code caching to reduce in-game stuttering.
Lepton Android games on Linux A container-based compatibility layer for running Android games. It is distinct from Proton and FEX.
Native ARM64 build Games compiled for ARM64 Can avoid translating x86 instructions, but the cited Valve documentation does not identify which Steam games have ARM64 builds or confirm that a particular game works on a particular ARM device.

Valve’s description of FEX explains its design, not the performance or compatibility of any individual game. Valve’s documentation sums up one likely route for developers: “For most developers that probably means running Windows x86 via Proton and FEX.” That is a description of the Steam Frame context, not a general guarantee for ARM Linux computers.

What this means when you want to play a game

Game compatibility is a chain, not a single yes-or-no property of the processor. The game must be available to the Steam environment on the device; the operating system and client must support that device; the game’s architecture must run natively or through translation; and graphics APIs and other game-specific requirements must work. A compatibility layer makes additional combinations possible, but it cannot guarantee every title will launch or perform well.

Steam Support notes that Steam Play may potentially allow Windows-only games to work on Linux, and advises users to filter the Store for SteamOS + Linux listings. A Linux listing is useful information, but it should not be treated as universal proof that a game works on every Linux device—especially an ARM device. Check current support for both the specific hardware and the game before choosing a device or installing a title.

What “Game is not available on your current platform” means

Steam’s platform-availability guidance addresses the message “Game is not available on your current platform.” It means Steam does not offer that game for the platform it detects in the current context. On an ARM system, an x86 game may need a supported translation path, and the presence of a compatibility layer alone does not establish that Steam or the game supports the device. Check the game’s platform information and the device’s documented compatibility rather than assuming the message can be bypassed by installing a different Linux distribution.
