Why SSD Write Speeds Slow Down and How to Improve Them

A sudden drop in SSD write speed may be normal cache behavior, but the source, host, cable, workload and drive condition can also limit transfers. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to check.

An SSD can write quickly at first and then slow during a long transfer because its write cache has filled. The speed after that burst depends on the specific drive, connection and workload; it is not necessarily a fault. If writes are slow from the start, reads are also slow, or the drive reports errors, check the full transfer path and the drive’s condition rather than assuming cache behavior.

Why SSD write speeds drop during a transfer

A write cache can make short transfers look faster

Some external SSDs use a cache to handle incoming writes quickly. Once that cache fills, the drive may write at a lower sustained rate. Seagate describes this burst-then-slower pattern for external drives; the size of the cache and the rate after it fills vary by model. A short benchmark or small copy therefore may not predict the speed of a much larger transfer. Seagate explains the difference between advertised and observed external-drive performance.

SLC-cache depletion is one portable-SSD example

Transcend identifies depletion of the SLC cache as a cause of slow writes on its portable SSDs. Its guidance also says repeated small-file writes can exhaust cache blocks faster than they clear, and that larger-capacity models in its product family have larger SLC caches. These are product-family observations, not a rule that applies to every brand or proof that a larger SSD always writes faster. Transcend’s portable SSD guidance describes this cache behavior.

Diagnose whether the slowdown is normal or points elsewhere

Note when the speed changes and what else is affected

  • If a transfer starts fast and drops after a large amount of data, cache exhaustion is one plausible explanation.
  • If writes are slow from the start, check the source drive, host, connection and file workload before blaming the SSD.
  • If reads are also slow, a full write cache alone is not a good explanation: Seagate says the cache behavior covered in its external SSD guidance affects writes, not reads. Look for another cause.

File size and type can change transfer results, so compare like with like when you investigate. Seagate lists factors that can affect external-drive performance.

Check the entire external-drive connection

A transfer is limited by more than the SSD: the source device, computer or other host, port, cable, adapter and enclosure can all matter. SanDisk recommends a cable and adapter suited to high-speed data transfer. Replace a cable when its supported rate or condition makes it a plausible bottleneck, not simply because a higher-rated cable exists. A faster cable cannot raise the SSD’s own sustained write rate or restore a cache that has filled. SanDisk outlines common causes of slow external storage transfers.

What to try, in order

  1. For a supported Seagate external SSD, let it idle while connected. Keep it attached to a powered-on, awake computer and leave the drive idle. Seagate says its drive cannot clean up the cache while disconnected, powered off, asleep or busy. This specific behavior should not be assumed for other SSDs. See Seagate’s cache-cleanup conditions.
  2. Verify the transfer path. Check that the source can supply data quickly, the host port and adapter support the connection you intend to use, and the cable is in good condition and suitable for high-speed data. Try a different supported port or cable only when doing so tests a plausible bottleneck.
  3. Check TRIM support before running SSD maintenance. TRIM lets compatible storage know that data ranges are no longer needed. In Windows, Microsoft documents this example for volume H: Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter H -ReTrim. Use the correct drive letter for your system. Windows’ storage optimizer uses retrim by default for an SSD that supports TRIM, but the operation is not a guaranteed fix for a slow transfer. Microsoft says it performs no operation for an SSD without TRIM support and for some removable or unknown volumes. Microsoft documents Optimize-Volume and its retrim behavior; its TRIM control-code documentation explains the hints sent for unused sectors.
  4. Check the drive maker’s current firmware instructions. Firmware can be an optimization topic, but an update is not a universal speed fix and procedures vary by model. Follow instructions for the exact drive rather than applying a generic update method. Microsoft’s firmware-update guidance addresses supported Windows Server drive paths and calls for risk-minimization planning for production updates; it is not a general consumer procedure. SanDisk lists firmware among SSD optimization topics; Microsoft describes the scope and cautions for supported Windows Server firmware updates.
  5. Preserve data and seek support if the drive behaves abnormally. Errors or read-only behavior alongside performance problems warrant attention from the drive maker. SanDisk explains that write, erase and rewrite cycles wear SSD cells and that a drive with no life remaining can enter read-only state. The available guidance does not give one threshold that diagnoses failure across SSDs, so do not infer remaining life from transfer speed alone. Back up important data before intensive testing. SanDisk describes SSD endurance and wear.

How to judge a sustained-write claim or a replacement

When a long transfer is the real workload, distinguish a short burst result from sustained write performance. Ask how the drive behaves after its cache fills, and compare results for a workload like yours: one large sequential copy may behave differently from many small-file writes. Cache size and post-cache rate are model-specific; the guidance cited here does not establish a universal speed target or identify a fastest model.

Do not choose a larger capacity solely on the assumption that it will write faster. Transcend describes a larger SLC cache on higher-capacity models in its own portable SSD family, but that does not establish the same relationship across brands. First identify whether your current limit is cache behavior, workload or the connection path.
