If an OpenAI stream fails after roughly 60 seconds on Spring AI 2.0.1, Spring has documented a version-specific cause: a per-call timeout overrode the configured timeout. Spring says the defect was fixed in Spring AI 2.1.0-M1, which honors spring.ai.openai.timeout and spring.ai.openai.chat.timeout again. That does not rule out network or intermediary failures in other versions or setups.
Why does a Spring AI stream stop after 60 seconds?
In its September 25, 2026 announcement of Spring AI 2.1.0-M1, Spring described a timeout regression affecting Spring AI 2.0.1’s OpenAI integration. According to the announcement, each request carried a 60-second per-call timeout that overrode the configured value. Streaming turns that lasted longer than a minute could therefore be aborted and surface as OpenAIIoException: Stream failed. Spring AI 2.1.0-M1 Available Now.

Which versions and settings are covered by the fix?
Spring says Spring AI 2.1.0-M1 honors both spring.ai.openai.timeout and spring.ai.openai.chat.timeout again. The cited announcement establishes the defect in 2.0.1 and the fix in 2.1.0-M1; it does not establish the complete set of versions that carry the fix. Check the release notes for the exact version you plan to use before upgrading or assuming the behavior applies.

How to check whether this is your issue
- Confirm the version. Check your dependency configuration or resolved dependencies to see whether the application uses Spring AI 2.0.1. The documented defect is specific to that version’s OpenAI integration.
- Confirm the integration and error. Verify that the affected requests use Spring AI’s OpenAI integration and check whether the failure appears as
OpenAIIoException: Stream failed. - Check where the connection ends. A cutoff near one minute alone does not identify the cause. Establish whether the failure occurs in the application, provider connection, or an intermediary before applying this diagnosis.
- Review the release and compatibility guidance. If you are considering a move to 2.1.0-M1, check the project’s current release notes and compatibility information; Spring’s announcement describes a milestone whose APIs may still change.
Does this mean a 60-second cutoff is never a network problem?
No. Spring’s announcement documents one cause for a particular version and integration. It does not show that every stream ending at about 60 seconds is caused by Spring AI, nor does it eliminate network or intermediary timeouts as possible causes in other configurations. Use the version, integration, error, and connection-close evidence together rather than diagnosing by duration alone.
