Some players prefer the older visuals because they see them as part of Classic WoW’s identity and atmosphere—not simply as graphics that have fallen behind. Blizzard has said preserving Classic’s overall feel matters, while the current WoW: Forever discussion reportedly gives players a choice between SD and HD character models. That preference is real, but the available evidence does not show how widespread it is.
Why can old graphics feel right for Classic?
Classic’s visuals sit within a broader restoration effort. Blizzard described its goal as recreating an authentic experience that still looked and felt like playing World of Warcraft in 2006. That work meant fitting older terrain and art data into a modern game system; Blizzard noted that the interaction between data, source code and assets affected terrain, gameplay, animations and lighting. Blizzard’s account of restoring WoW Classic explains why the old look is connected to how the world behaves, not just how detailed its models appear.

Blizzard’s Classic team also framed the appeal in broader terms: “Many players today choose to play Classic WoW because they love that feel, and don’t want it to be lost.” The statement appears in the team’s 2022 Classic design update. It refers to Classic’s overall experience, including its social and game design, rather than making a claim specifically about graphics.
What do players mean by “old graphics” or “timeless”?
“Old graphics” can describe several things at once: lower-resolution assets, older character models, or an art style that feels consistent with Classic’s world. Those are different qualities. A newer model may have more detail without feeling like a better fit to every player; someone else may prefer the clearer shapes and updated presentation.
#1 Best Overall
A 2019 Blizzard-hosted “Update Classic Graphics” discussion captures that disagreement. Participants praised Classic’s old models and style, asked for updated graphics, and disputed whether the older look was “timeless.” These comments show the kinds of arguments players make, not how many players hold each view.
How should you compare old and modern visuals?
“Better graphics” is not a single objective measure. A useful comparison separates visual detail from style, atmosphere and consistency:
Rank #2
- Resolution and detail: Older assets and newer HD models differ in how much visual detail they show.
- Style and continuity: A model or effect can look more modern yet feel less consistent with Classic’s established visual language.
- Atmosphere and memory: Players may connect a particular look with Classic’s mood or their own history with the game.
- Choice and consistency: A visual option matters differently if it applies coherently across characters and animations.
These are ways to frame the trade-offs, not measured qualities or universal player priorities.

A transcript of a BlizzCon 2026 panel reports that WoW: Forever will offer a unified setting for SD or HD character models, and that Classic animations were restored across HD character models. This information comes from a third-party panel transcript, so treat it as reported panel information rather than an independently confirmed official specification.
Rank #3
The reported options suggest that the visual discussion is not necessarily a choice between preserving everything old and replacing everything with a modern look. The availability and scope described here concern character models and animations; they do not establish that every part of the game’s environment has the same SD/HD choice.
Is the old look why players return to Classic?
It may be part of the appeal for some, but the evidence does not support treating graphics as the sole reason. Blizzard’s statement describes attachment to Classic’s overall feel, with social experience and design also in view. GamesRadar quoted WoW world builder Matthew Armstrong describing the audience for the project as Classic gamers and people who left over changes to areas such as art style, story, social aspects, game design or favorite classes. That interview reports his description of the intended audience; it is not a survey of why players left or returned.

How many players prefer old graphics?
No representative poll or study in the cited material measures the share of WoW players who prefer legacy graphics. Forum comments are individual opinions, and beta interest is not a measure of visual preference. PC Gamer’s September 21, 2026 report discusses interest in the beta and quotes a designer on the scale of that interest, but does not quantify how many players favor old visuals. Its beta-interest report should not be used to infer a graphics-preference percentage.

Further reading on WoW’s art
For readers interested in the game’s visual history rather than a guide to WoW: Forever, Blizzard describes The Art of World of Warcraft as a hardcover book covering the game’s artistic evolution. It offers context on WoW art, but does not establish what players prefer.
