Some video game adaptations succeed because they understand what makes a particular game compelling and reshape that appeal for film or television. Copying scenes is not enough: a screen story has to work for viewers who never played the game, while giving fans a reason to care. There is no single formula, because a character-driven game, a sprawling fictional world and a competitive sport may each call for a different approach.
Why do some video game adaptations succeed while others fail?
The strongest examples begin by asking what the game actually offers. It may be a carefully written plot, memorable characters, a distinctive world, a style of play or a real-world story connected to the game. The adaptation then chooses which of those elements can carry a film or series—and how to make them work in a medium where the audience watches rather than plays.

Asad Qizilbash, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s SVP of Publishing and head of PlayStation Productions, describes the challenge plainly: “There’s not one size that fits all in terms of a method of adapting video games to film or TV.” The examples below illustrate approaches, not a proven recipe. Interviews and industry commentary can explain creative choices, but they do not establish one universal cause of success or failure.

What makes a good video game adaptation?
Choose an approach that fits the game
A game with a strong story may lend itself to a direct retelling; a franchise built around a setting or activity may offer better material for a new plot. Sony’s account of PlayStation Productions contrasts The Last of Us, with its established characters and narrative, with Gran Turismo, which did not have a franchise story to adapt. The film instead drew on the real life of Jann Mardenborough, a player who became a professional racing driver. The point is not that one approach is superior, but that the source determines what is available to adapt. Sony Interactive Entertainment explains the different approaches.

Know what fans value—and bring source knowledge to the work
Familiarity with the game can help a creative team preserve its relationships, tone and details rather than borrowing only its name or imagery. The collaboration between The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann and screenwriter and showrunner Craig Mazin is often cited as an example. Mazin has argued that adaptations struggled when the people making them did not love the game; that is his perspective, not proof that fandom guarantees a good result. Jon Wardle, director of the National Film and Television School, similarly credited understanding and affection for the games in the reception of The Last of Us and Fallout. The Royal Television Society discusses those examples, alongside reporting from the Associated Press and a Sky interview with Mazin.
Translate the experience instead of copying the mechanics
Players make choices, explore and act; film and television guide viewers through a fixed sequence. A screen version cannot simply reproduce gameplay and expect it to feel the same. It can instead preserve the emotion or tension that gameplay creates, using performance, editing, sound, visual design and pacing. The British Film Institute notes the importance of carrying over a source’s distinctive feel and visual language. In The Last of Us, that includes its emotional arc and survival-horror atmosphere. The BFI looks at the rise of video game adaptations; the RTS also discusses the shift from player agency to a viewer’s experience.

Use the format—and make the story accessible
A feature film has limited time; television can give relationships and plot more room to unfold. But extra episodes do not help unless the story uses that space well. Mazin said The Last of Us was made for people who had played the game “a hundred times or zero times.” Druckmann made the same accessibility goal explicit: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show.” Those statements describe the creators’ intent, not a guarantee that every adaptation will satisfy both audiences. The Television Academy’s account of the series and Druckmann’s Sony interview discuss that aim.
Change details when the new medium needs it
Fidelity is not a scene-by-scene checklist. A show may omit events, add material or spend more time with a supporting character while retaining the source’s defining appeal. Sony describes the adaptation of The Last of Us as a process of deciding what to leave out and what to add; Mazin has also described asking what works best as television. Changes are most defensible when they strengthen the screen story without erasing what made the game distinctive. Sony’s account of PlayStation Productions and the Sky interview with Mazin address those choices.

How do successful adaptations take different forms?
| Example | What the game provides | Screen approach | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us | A defined story, characters and relationships | A television retelling developed with game creator Neil Druckmann and screenwriter Craig Mazin | Preserving emotional structure while adapting pacing, character focus and events for television |
| Fallout | A recognizable universe, established tone and rich world-building | A new story set within the game world | An adaptation can use a setting as a foundation for new characters instead of replaying a familiar plot |
| Gran Turismo | A racing game franchise without an established narrative | A film drawing on the real story of Jann Mardenborough | A game’s activity or real-world connections may be more adaptable than a pre-existing plot |
| Arcane and Castlevania | Game worlds and source material | Animated television adaptations | Video game adaptations are not limited to live action; the Associated Press identifies both as successful examples |
The comparison draws on coverage by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the Royal Television Society, the BFI and the Associated Press. These examples show possible strategies, not directly comparable performance: critical response, box office, streaming audience, awards, game sales and fan opinion measure different things.
Does an adaptation have to stay faithful to the game?
It should be faithful to the game’s distinctive appeal, not necessarily to every plot beat. A useful adaptation keeps the elements that matter—perhaps a relationship, a tone, a world or the feeling of danger—and finds screen techniques that convey them. It may change chronology, perspective or supporting details because viewers do not control the action as players do.

For fans, recognizable details can reward knowledge of the source. For newcomers, those details should not replace clear motivations and stakes. The balance is successful when the show or film has a coherent story on its own and the source’s identity remains visible in the choices it makes.

One common source of disappointment is a mismatch between what fans value and what the adaptation chooses to emphasize. A title can reproduce characters, locations and set pieces yet lose the emotional relationships or distinctive atmosphere that gave those elements meaning. The reverse problem is also possible: an adaptation may assume prior knowledge and leave nonplayers unsure why events matter.

Format can compound the mismatch. Gameplay depends on agency and interaction; a screen story must create engagement through character, suspense and visual storytelling instead. A rushed film may not have space to build a world or relationship, while a series can still falter if it mistakes episode count for meaningful development. These are useful ways to analyze a particular title, not evidence that all adaptations fail for the same reasons.
How should you judge whether an adaptation worked?
Separate the questions rather than treating “success” as one score. Ask whether the creative team understood the source, whether it chose a suitable story strategy, whether the format gave that story room, and whether a viewer unfamiliar with the game could follow the stakes. Then distinguish artistic reception from commercial or franchise outcomes: a critic’s assessment, audience figures, sales, awards and fan response are not interchangeable.
Numbers sometimes cited around adaptations need similar care. The Royal Television Society’s 2025 article reports 30 million U.S. viewers per episode for The Last of Us, but the passage does not document the measurement definition or underlying source. The RTS also quotes Ubisoft’s Lisa Opie saying 90% of Gen Z play games regularly and that 62% of UK Gen Alpha gamers play for over five hours a week, compared with 17% of Gen Z gamers. These are attributed statements, not independently verified statistics here. The Television Academy reported in 2023 that The Last of Us game had sold 37 million copies since its 2013 release; that is a historical figure, not a current sales total. None of these measures alone proves why an adaptation succeeded.
