Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSome software developers are using AI for coding tasks while limiting or avoiding it for other work. In Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey, 17.1% of 13,857 respondents selected concern about losing job skills or training an AI to replace them as a reason to avoid AI at work or school. The findings point to conditional use—not a wholesale rejection by developers.
What developers said about avoiding AI
Stack Overflow asked respondents whether they tried to avoid using AI tools or agents at work or school and allowed them to select a reason. Of 13,857 respondents, 41.3% said they did not avoid AI. Other selections included:
- 17.1% (2,367 respondents): concern about losing job skills or training an AI to replace them.
- 15.2% (2,108): moral or ethical concerns.
- 13.0% (1,802): privacy or security issues.
- 8.2% (1,129): environmental concerns.
These are responses to a particular survey question, not a census of software developers. The percentages describe respondents’ selected reasons; they should not be read as proof that the same share of all developers avoids AI. Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey overview also identifies coding assistants and agents as a leading AI use case, underscoring that use and reservations can exist at the same time.
Why some developers draw a line around AI use
Keeping the problem-solving work
For some engineers, writing and changing code is not just the final step in producing software; it is how they understand the system. CNN Business spoke with software engineer Audrey Eschright, who has 20 years of experience. “Writing code is how you solve problems,” she said. “As a software engineer, the process of figuring out what a system does is to change it.” Her concern is that handing off too much of that process could reduce a developer’s involvement in understanding the software.

Tools may not know enough about the work
Software is shaped by project history, technical constraints, user needs and decisions that may not be visible in a prompt. Engineer Laura Housh told CNN that AI can offer direction or a second set of eyes, but lacks the context to be truly useful in her work. “I’ve tried to use it for coding, and I just can’t get behind it,” she said. She also described valuing control, critical thinking and curiosity.
Concerns about work and skills
Respondents’ concern about losing skills or training a replacement reflects uncertainty about how automation may change their jobs. Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar told CNN that it can be “quite unnerving” for people to know how much of their work might be automated and whether they will need to retool. That is an interview perspective, not evidence that a particular job will disappear.
Job dissatisfaction is part of the backdrop, but CNN also cited burnout, technology fatigue, economic uncertainty and unclear paths to advancement. It would be misleading to attribute developers’ unhappiness to AI alone.

Do developers trust AI-generated code?
Trust depends substantially on whether a person can check the result. In Stack Overflow’s 2026 trust question, 48.0% of 14,304 respondents said they trusted AI output when they could easily verify it. Just 6.6% said they trusted it for many tasks, including important work decisions. The gap suggests that many respondents distinguish between using AI as an assistive tool and relying on it without review. The survey’s AI trust data reports these figures for that question’s respondents.
A plausible way to apply that distinction is to treat AI output as a suggestion, then check it against requirements, tests, security expectations and the surrounding code. If the result is difficult to verify or depends on context the tool does not have, the risk of accepting a plausible but unsuitable answer is greater. The survey measures reported trust, not the accuracy of generated code.

CNN’s account of the survey reported that a little more than 74% of respondents said AI was useful for implementing code and about 72% for debugging. CNN also reported 34.4% finding it useful for other job functions such as communication and design. These are CNN-reported survey figures and are approximate where stated; they are not measures of code quality or proof that AI works equally well across projects.

The practical difference is less “AI or no AI” than the task and the developer’s ability to evaluate what comes back. A bounded implementation or debugging suggestion may be easier to inspect than advice on a consequential decision or a system whose context is missing. Developers can choose where assistance saves effort without surrendering responsibility for understanding and validating the result.
What the survey can—and cannot—show
Stack Overflow’s survey captures the views of people who responded, and the avoidance and trust questions had different sample sizes: 13,857 and 14,304 respectively. They are not a representative headcount of every software developer, nor do attitudes establish AI’s actual capabilities or its effect on employment. The engineers quoted by CNN provide individual experiences, not a measure of how common those experiences are.
The clearest takeaway is that AI adoption is not a binary choice. Developers may use it where output is checkable, avoid it where context or control matters more, and remain concerned about how automation could affect their skills and careers.
