Some school districts are changing student devices, but there is no nationwide move from Chromebooks to iPads and laptops. Recent district plans show different choices: laptops for sustained academic workflows, tablets for younger pupils or selected lessons, and changes to whether students take devices home. Those are related decisions, not one uniform replacement trend.
Why are some schools switching student devices?
The clearest stated reason for moving toward laptops is that some schoolwork increasingly resembles sustained computer work: researching, drafting and revising, handling files, switching among browser-based tasks, using peripherals, collaborating on projects and receiving teacher feedback. Delaware Valley School District in Pennsylvania says those demands are a better fit for its next student device than its long-running one-to-one iPad model. It also wants a platform more consistent with tools teachers have used. Delaware Valley School District

That is a local assessment of workflow, not proof that laptops improve learning everywhere. Tablets can suit younger students, touch-based activities and particular instructional uses; laptops may be more practical for longer writing and multitasking. Age, accessibility needs, curriculum and the software a school actually uses all affect the choice.
What current district decisions show
| District | What is changing | What the district says or the plan indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas City Public Schools, Missouri | In 2026, the district targeted more than 30,000 Windows PCs and Chromebooks for replacement and procured more than 4,500 MacBook Neos for students in grade 8 and above. | A shift toward Apple devices. The figures describe this district’s rollout, not a national trend. Kansas City Public Schools |
| Delaware Valley School District, Pennsylvania | Moving from a long-running one-to-one iPad program to MacBook Neo. | The district cites research, writing, revision, multitasking, file handling and alignment with teacher tools as reasons for the laptop choice. Specialist desktops remain for media, engineering, business and graphic arts work requiring particular software or performance. Delaware Valley School District |
| Boise School District, Idaho | Planning a staged transition to Apple devices. | The district says planning is intended to improve budget predictability and support. Its estimated savings are local projections, not an independent comparison. Boise School District |
| Poway Unified School District, California | Maintaining a mixed, age-banded iPad and Chromebook fleet. | Its plan includes Chromebook carts for grades 3–5, so students do not need to take computers home every day. The published device and warranty figures reflect Poway’s own configurations and assumptions. Poway Unified School District |
| Seattle Public Schools, Washington | Ending individual iPad assignments for K–2 pupils from January 4, 2027, while retaining classroom access. | This is a change to access and instructional use, not a switch from iPads to Chromebooks or laptops. The district says iPads will remain available for selected lessons, accessibility and assessment. Seattle Public Schools |
These examples are not interchangeable. Kansas City is replacing a large mixed Windows-and-Chromebook inventory with Apple devices for some students; Delaware Valley is replacing a one-to-one tablet model with laptops; Poway is retaining a mix; Seattle is reducing individually assigned devices for the youngest grades while preserving classroom use.

Why cost and support matter alongside classroom tasks
A district buys more than a device. It must plan for management, repairs, warranties, staff training, deployment, replacement timing and the support workload over a device’s life. A platform that fits lessons but strains the IT team or budget may not be a practical district choice.
Boise estimated about $1 million in savings over five years in its 2026 planning. That is the district’s estimate, not an independently verified finding that Apple devices cost less than competing platforms. The district also cites expected teacher training, deployment assistance and AppleCare as parts of its plan. Boise School District

Poway publishes device and warranty costs for its own fleet configurations, and its use of classroom Chromebook carts for grades 3–5 illustrates how access arrangements can affect the amount of equipment students carry home. Those local figures and arrangements should not be treated as a like-for-like price comparison with another district. Poway Unified School District

Why some schools are reducing take-home access instead
Changing a device platform and changing how much technology children use are separate policy choices. Seattle’s planned K–2 change is about individual access and classroom practice: from January 4, 2027, iPads are to be available in classrooms for selected lessons, accessibility and assessment, rather than assigned individually to every child. Seattle describes typical daily technology use for those pupils as 0–30 minutes, a stated range rather than a measured average. District leaders say technology should complement hands-on, social, language-rich and interpersonal experiences in early elementary school. Seattle Public Schools
Associated Press has also reported that some districts cite repairs and distraction when ending take-home device use for younger students. That trend should not be described as replacing Chromebooks with other computers: a school may keep devices available for classroom use while changing where, when and how students use them. For context, 96% of U.S. public schools reported providing digital devices to students who needed them during the 2021–2022 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, as reported by AP. That dated access statistic does not measure current device replacement rates or show how many districts are switching platforms. Associated Press

- Student tasks and software: Do pupils mainly use touch-based activities, or do they regularly write, research, revise, manage files, multitask and connect peripherals? Which required apps and browser tools must work?
- Age and accessibility: Does the plan fit students’ developmental needs, assistive technology and accessibility requirements? Should devices be individually assigned, shared in classrooms or used differently by grade?
- Staff and school environment: Will the platform work with teachers’ tools, existing systems and instructional practices?
- Operations and lifecycle cost: What are the district’s expected costs for devices, warranties, repairs, management and replacement, and what assumptions are behind those estimates?
- Rollout and support: What training, deployment help and ongoing technical support are included?
- Home access: Will students take a device home, use classroom-shared equipment, or have different arrangements by grade?
The district examples provide reasons those factors matter, but they do not establish a universal ranking of Apple, Chromebook or Windows devices. Nor do they provide an independent, comparable cross-platform study of learning outcomes or total cost. Decisions should be read as local plans grounded in each district’s needs.
