If one app stays in portrait while other apps rotate, the app is probably designed or configured to use only that orientation. Samsung’s Auto rotate setting controls whether the tablet follows how you hold it; it cannot make an app support a layout it does not offer. If no apps rotate, check the tablet’s rotation control and software instead.
Why one app may stay in portrait
Samsung says some apps support only a specific orientation and will not rotate when the device turns. That is different from a tablet-wide rotation problem: if other apps switch to landscape, the display’s rotation control is likely working, and the stubborn app’s orientation support is the first thing to check.

Check the app’s own options
Look in the app’s settings or help for a display, layout, or orientation option. Some apps simply do not provide a landscape layout, and changing the tablet’s rotation setting will not add one.
Try Samsung MultiStar only if it is available
Samsung documented a Good Lock feature called “Rotate with our best” for the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ in an article published April 19, 2021. Its instructions placed the option under Good Lock > Unit > MultiStar > I ♡ Galaxy Tablet, where users could choose when and for which apps it applied. That article describes an Android 11-era feature, not a guarantee that the same option is available on current tablets: Samsung says Good Lock availability varies by country and One UI version. Check your device for the option rather than assuming it is supported.

If the home screen or only certain screens do not rotate
Rotation can differ by screen. Samsung notes that some screens do not rotate and that Home screen rotation settings are separate. Check Quick Settings for a Portrait or Landscape lock, and check the tablet’s Home screen options if the issue is limited to the home screen. Enabling Auto rotate does not necessarily change behavior on every screen.
If no apps rotate, troubleshoot the tablet
- Check Quick Settings: Swipe down to open Quick Settings and select Auto rotate, not Portrait or Landscape lock. If the control is not on the first panel, edit Quick Settings to add it back.
- Install available software updates: Check the tablet’s software update settings and install any available update.
- Restart the tablet: Restart, then test again in an app that normally supports rotation. Turn the tablet without touching the screen during the test.
- Check for damage and seek help if needed: Samsung lists physical damage as a possible factor affecting performance and recommends contacting Samsung Support if the problem continues. A factory reset is a later troubleshooting step in Samsung’s guidance and erases personal information, so do not start there.
What Android 16 changes—and what it does not
Android 16, released in 2025, changes the default rules for many large-screen apps. Android Developers says that for apps targeting API level 36, orientation, resizability, and aspect-ratio restrictions no longer apply by default on displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp. Google Play’s guide says apps must target API 36 as of August 2026. These rules do not cover every app or tablet: exceptions include games and displays narrower than 600dp, and developers can temporarily opt out under documented conditions. This platform change is not a universal fix for portrait-only apps. It depends on the tablet’s Android version, the app’s target API, display width, and applicable exceptions. Android Developers also warns that forcing a phone-oriented layout into larger or resizable windows can stretch the interface, push controls off-screen, or cause it to lose state. Older app and device combinations may retain earlier behavior, and Samsung still identifies app-specific orientation support as a reason an app may not rotate.
