Some original PS3 games can be played on a PS5 by streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets, if the title is currently available. That is different from downloading a PS4 or PS5 remake or remaster: those are separate versions made for newer consoles.
Can you play PS3 games on PS5?
Not from an original PS3 disc. Sony’s backward-compatibility support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” See Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

There are two other possibilities, depending on the game: stream the original PS3 version through PlayStation Plus Premium, or download a separately released PS4 or PS5 remake or remaster. Neither option makes the original PS3 disc playable on PS5.

Why does streaming fill the gap?
To run a PS3 game locally, a console would need to execute the original software and reproduce the platform behavior it expects. Sony’s public materials establish that PS3 discs are unsupported on PS5 and that some original PS3 titles are offered by streaming; they do not give one definitive engineering or business reason for choosing that service approach.

The PS3 used Sony’s Cell processor and an RSX graphics processor, as described in Sony’s Cell overview and PS3 launch announcement. An emulation developer interviewed by Digital Trends discusses the challenges of reproducing PS3 behavior on later processors with a different architecture. That helps explain why local emulation can be technically demanding; it does not show that emulation is impossible or establish Sony’s motive.
How the three ways to access a PS3-era game differ
| Route | What happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | Would run locally from the disc, but PS5 does not support PS3 discs. | This route is not available on PS5, according to Sony Support. |
| Original PS3 game via streaming | The game runs through Sony’s service and is delivered as a stream rather than installed as a native PS3 game. | PlayStation Plus Premium, a supported market, and an eligible title are required. Availability varies; check the current local catalog. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide and cloud-streaming information. |
| PS4 or PS5 remake/remaster | A distinct version of the game, released for a later PlayStation platform, that may be downloaded. | Check the Store listing for the exact version and platform. Sony distinguishes these releases from original PS3 games offered for streaming in its PlayStation Plus guide. |
How to check whether a specific game is available
- Identify the version. Check whether you mean the original PS3 release or a PS4/PS5 remake or remaster. Store listings for a newer version do not mean the PS3 edition runs on PS5.
- Check your local PlayStation Store or catalog. Look for the exact title and whether it is offered as a stream or as a downloadable PS4/PS5 version. Sony’s cloud-streaming page notes that game eligibility and supported regions matter.
- Confirm your plan and market eligibility. Original PS3 streaming is a Premium benefit in select markets, not a universal feature for every PS5 owner. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide describes the service offering; check the current local listing before subscribing or expecting access.
What streaming does—and does not—mean
Streaming is a way to access certain original PS3 titles through Sony’s service despite the PS5’s lack of PS3 disc support. It does not make the PS5 natively compatible with PS3 software, nor does it mean every PS3 game is available. The game, subscription tier, and market all affect access, and the catalog can change.
