Why do some players angle their keyboards?
To make room for mouse movement
Players using low mouse sensitivity often move the mouse across a wide area. Turning the keyboard diagonally can clear more of the desk beside it, leaving room for those sweeps. Esports.net describes this as one reason some Counter-Strike players use the position; it is a practical explanation, not evidence that every pro does it or that the angle improves performance. A player may recreate a practiced home arrangement at a LAN event, where the desk and equipment may differ. Esports.net also offers setup familiarity as an explanation, but no measured performance effect is established.

Does tilting a keyboard improve aim or ergonomics?
The available sources do not establish that a sideways keyboard improves aim, prevents injury, or is ergonomically better. They also do not quantify how many professional gamers tilt their keyboards or why. The 2026 arXiv preprint on esports training is about preparation interviews, not keyboard angle, so it does not answer those questions. The arXiv paper
Cleveland Clinic Esports Medicine’s Gamer’s Health Guide advises: “Your keyboard should be flat, with no tilt.” It also says to keep the keyboard flat at the body’s midline, place it in front of the player, and keep the wrist neutral. The guide’s publication date is not confirmed here.

What setup should you try?
There is no one-size-fits-all choice in the available guidance. Balance the space you need with a position that lets your arms and wrists stay comfortable and aligned.

If you experiment with rotation, distinguish turning the keyboard across the desk from raising its rear feet: the sources address the former and do not establish a recommended elevation angle. Stop adjusting for appearance alone; prioritize a neutral wrist and a position that does not force your arm into an uncomfortable reach.
