Trophies from several PlayStation generations can appear in one account view, yet different versions of the same game may have separate trophy sets. That is because PS4 and PS5 releases can be distinct game versions, and publishers decide how trophies and save transfers work for each title. There is no universal rule that every PS5 version gets a separate list—or that moving a save moves its trophies.
How one PlayStation account can show separate lists for one game
PlayStation’s account-level trophy view brings together trophies from PS3, PS Vita, PS4 and PS5. That combined view does not mean every version of a particular game shares one trophy set. Sony describes PS5 games as unique versions made for the console, and some PS4 games can be upgraded to digital PS5 versions. A game may therefore have distinct PS4 and PS5 versions, with trophy behavior determined for that title.

Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ says save transfer between a PS4 version and a PS5 version is a developer decision that varies by game. That guidance is specifically about saves; it does not state a universal technical rule for how trophy lists must be set up.
What publishers do: shared and separate trophy sets
Publisher support examples show that the outcome varies by game. A save and its trophies are not interchangeable: a save might transfer without trophies transferring, while a transferred save might preserve some ongoing progress that counts after the player meets the relevant conditions again.

| Example | What the publisher says | What that means for players |
|---|---|---|
| DOOM Eternal | Bethesda says PS4 trophies remain visible on PS5, but new PS5 trophies count toward a separate set specific to PS5 gameplay. (Bethesda Support; page date not stated.) | Previously earned trophies remain visible on the account, but new PS5-version trophies belong to a separate set. |
| Fallout 4 | Bethesda says new PS5 trophies count toward a separate set. Some ongoing progress may transfer with a PS4 save and count after the player re-triggers the relevant conditions. (Bethesda Support; page date not stated.) | Do not assume every old trophy or unfinished objective will unlock automatically after transferring a save. |
| Square Enix’s PS4/PS5 support example | Square Enix says trophies are the same across both platforms, but trophies are not carried over when a save is transferred from PS4 to PS5. The accessible article text does not identify the game. (Square Enix Support; page date not stated.) | A shared trophy set does not necessarily mean trophies earned on one version transfer as part of a save migration. |
These cases establish that publishers handle versions differently; they do not show how common either approach is across PlayStation games.
Why save transfer does not answer the trophy question
A save contains game progress; a trophy is an account achievement. A game can let you move a save without carrying over trophies, as Square Enix’s support example notes. In another game, some ongoing trophy progress may be reflected after migration, but conditions may need to be met again, as Bethesda describes for Fallout 4. An already-earned trophy, an unfinished objective and the save file itself can each have different transfer behavior.

For the same reason, a transferred save does not by itself establish whether the new version has a separate list, whether past trophies will unlock automatically, or whether the player must earn them again. Check the publisher’s instructions for the specific game and version.

- Open the game’s trophy information. On PS5, select your profile picture, choose Trophies, then select the game. On PS4, open Trophies from the function screen and select the game. PlayStation documents these steps in its trophy support guide.
- Identify the game version. Check whether you are playing the PS4 release, a native PS5 release or an upgraded PS5 copy. The version matters because a publisher may treat its trophies separately.
- Look up the publisher’s guidance for that title. Check whether its support page says the sets are shared or separate, and what happens to earned trophies and in-progress objectives when a save moves between versions.
- Distinguish automatic unlocks from re-earned progress. Follow the title-specific instructions rather than assuming a transferred save will award every trophy again.
Trophy counts, grades and earning conditions vary by game, so the console’s trophy information and the publisher’s title-specific guidance are the useful checks—not the fact that trophies appear together in your profile.
