Some music and film fans choose physical media for dependable access to a particular title, more intentional listening or viewing, privacy, and the pleasure of handling a disc or record. Their reasons are personal accounts, not proof of a broad shift away from streaming—and physical media can complement streaming rather than replace it.
Why do people still buy physical media?
In a 2026 Guardian feature, readers described several different reasons for returning to CDs, DVDs and vinyl. Their accounts show what physical formats can mean to particular people; they are not a representative survey of listeners or viewers.

To keep access to a chosen title
Some interviewees worried that a title available through a subscription could later disappear or become harder to access. A physical copy gives its owner access to that particular edition without depending on a streaming subscription or its catalogue. That is a difference in access, not a promise that a disc or record will remain playable forever.
The phrase “if you can’t hold it, you don’t own it” captures a feeling of insecurity about changing access. It should not be read as a legal conclusion about what streaming customers own or what rights they may have; those questions depend on the service, terms and applicable law.

To find titles and make choices outside a catalogue
Readers also valued being able to choose what to watch or listen to without relying on what a service currently offers or recommends. Ruth, a retired professor from Michigan, described the appeal of human curation: “No algorithm is as creative as a well-stocked human brain alive to its actual surroundings.” Her view is personal testimony, not an expert finding about recommendation systems.
Secondhand shops and flea markets were among the places interviewees used to find older or harder-to-find films and music. A physical collection can therefore be a way to seek out specific titles, though finding a particular copy is not guaranteed.

To listen or watch with more attention
Ash, a 52-year-old university lecturer from Cornwall, said: “I spent more time making playlists than listening to music; I lost the ability to listen to a whole album and missed the physical connection with music.” For Ash, choosing a record or CD was tied to listening to an album as a whole, rather than continually arranging or skipping tracks.
That kind of ritual can matter for films, too: selecting a DVD, putting it on, and watching it with other people can make the activity feel distinct from browsing a streaming menu. The Guardian accounts include family rituals as one reason physical media remains meaningful to some people.

For privacy, unreliable internet or artist support
Some readers said they felt less controlled when their choices were not mediated by a service, and some cited privacy. Others said they wanted to support musicians. These are the motives those interviewees reported; the accounts do not establish how a particular purchase affects an artist’s income or how much data any specific service collects.
Internet reliability can also shape the choice. A physical copy does not rely on a live connection to a streaming catalogue during playback, but it does require compatible equipment and a playable copy.

Do physical copies replace streaming?
Not necessarily. The reader accounts describe people who use streaming for some media and prefer physical formats for other purposes. Streaming offers convenient access to a broad catalogue; a CD, DVD or record offers a specific copy and a different way of choosing and experiencing it. The Guardian feature does not establish whether physical formats are replacing streaming across the market, or how common any of these preferences are.

How to choose between streaming and a physical copy

| Consideration | Streaming access | Physical copy |
|---|---|---|
| Access to a chosen title | Depends on the service and its available catalogue. | Provides access to the particular copy, subject to its condition and a compatible player. |
| Convenience and selection | Offers convenient browsing across the service’s catalogue. | Requires finding or buying each title and keeping the copies together. |
| Choice and recommendations | Browsing and recommendations may be shaped by the service. | You choose from the titles you own or can find. |
| Internet | Relies on the service and, for streaming playback, an internet connection. | Playback does not rely on streaming access, but needs compatible equipment. |
| Privacy priorities | Some interviewees preferred physical formats because of privacy concerns; the accounts do not compare particular services’ data practices. | Some interviewees valued the privacy of choosing media outside a service; buying or owning a copy is not a general privacy guarantee. |
| Ritual and space | Can make browsing and playback easy, without storing a collection of discs or records. | Offers a tangible selection and album or viewing ritual, but takes storage space. |
Start with the title and the way you want to use it. If the copy is easy to find, you have somewhere to keep it, and you have the right player, physical media may suit you. If broad, convenient browsing matters more, streaming may fit better. You can also use both: stream where convenience wins and buy copies of titles you especially want to keep or revisit.
What equipment and space do you need?
Match the player to the format: CDs need a CD-compatible player, DVDs need a DVD player, and vinyl records need a turntable. A player’s format compatibility matters more than a generic label, so check the supported formats before buying equipment. The examples in the Guardian feature include DVD players, projectors, record players and CD collections; no equipment was tested or compared there.
Storage is part of the decision, too. Ruth’s collection included 5,300 CDs, while Ash described collecting more than 5,000 records and CDs between 1990 and 2009. Those are individual collection sizes reported in the Guardian feature, not typical amounts or industry statistics. If you want to start small, choosing a few titles avoids committing to substantial storage before you know whether the format suits you.

The Guardian feature, published 2 October 2026, records individual readers’ experiences. It supports the conclusion that some people value physical media for access, choice, privacy, artist support and the physical ritual. It does not measure how many people share those reasons, establish a market-wide shift, or test sound quality, cost or environmental impact. Those questions need different evidence.
