Some people are choosing simpler phones and other limited-purpose devices to reduce distraction and regain control over their digital routines—not because most consumers are abandoning smartphones. Research identifies several motivations, from attention and health to religious practice and political disaffiliation, while also showing the practical costs of going without smartphone features.
Why are some people choosing simpler gadgets?
There is no single reason. A 2024 peer-reviewed interview study by Annabel Rothschild and Janne Lindqvist found that people adopting traditional or designer “dumbphones” described motivations including reducing distractions, supporting mental or physical health, religious devotion, and political disaffiliation. The researchers interviewed eight traditional-phone users, five designer-phone users, and two developers. Those accounts help explain individual choices; they do not establish how common each motivation is among consumers. Read the study summary from Aalto University.

Fewer distractions and more deliberate routines
A phone with fewer apps, alerts, and feeds can make it harder to slip into habitual scrolling. That is a design trade-off, not a guaranteed fix: a less capable device may reduce some temptations, but the user still has to decide how to spend the time and attention freed up.
Health, faith, and personal values
The interview study also records choices shaped by health concerns, religious devotion, and resistance to aspects of digital culture. These are distinct reasons, and not every person who limits a phone is trying to make the same statement or follow the same routine.

Is this a mass move away from smartphones?
The available figures do not show that most consumers are switching to simpler devices. Asurion’s 2024 summary of a US consumer survey said 5% planned to replace or upgrade their smartphone in the next 12 months. That measures upgrade plans, not interest in feature phones; it cannot show what the other respondents wanted. Asurion also reported that 66% of surveyed US consumers did not consider themselves tech savvy, which likewise does not mean they prefer simpler gadgets. See Asurion’s 2024 report summary.
Screen-time concerns can lead to choices beyond changing a phone. MIDiA Research says two-thirds of consumers tried to cut down screen time in Q1 2024; it reports that 21% turned to physical formats and 23% to in-person activities. The opened summary does not show the underlying sample details alongside those figures, so they are best read as MIDiA’s reported findings rather than a precise measure of every market. What simpler devices give up—and what they can complicate
Restricting a device can reduce access to distractions, but the same limits may obstruct things people depend on. Rothschild and Lindqvist note that government systems, business services, and personal relationships often rely on smartphone capabilities. Choosing digital disconnection can therefore be more feasible for some people than others, and may bring complications even for those who value it.
- Essential access: Check whether you need banking, work, government, transit, map, or authentication apps on the go.
- Communication: Consider whether family, colleagues, or group chats depend on a particular messaging app.
- Practical overhead: A second device—or separate camera, music player, and navigation tool—may add more inconvenience than it removes.
- Network fit: Carrier support, network bands, and availability vary by country and model. Verify compatibility before buying a handset.
A feature phone is one physical-product option; a 2025 Toaster trends report names the Nokia 2780, Light Phone, and Punkt while discussing minimal phones and finite-purpose experiences. Those examples illustrate the category, not sales growth or universal suitability. View Toaster’s 2025 trends report.

Why smartphones remain hard to replace
Simplicity has to compete with convenience. In a representative German survey, 74% of smartphone users said their phone had fully or mostly replaced their alarm clock, 65% said the same of a camera, and 56% a video camera. Bitkom Research interviewed 1,004 people aged 16 and older in Germany during weeks 2–5 of 2025. These results show how many functions one device can cover in Germany; they are not a global measure of consumer preferences. See Bitkom’s survey release.
Privacy concerns form part of the wider context, but the evidence does not show they cause people to buy simpler gadgets. In Deloitte’s Q2 2024 survey of 3,857 US consumers, 79% said technology providers’ privacy and security policies were not very clear, and 79% said it was not very easy to control the data providers collected. Those self-reports indicate concerns about clarity and control—not a proven motive for switching devices. Read Deloitte’s 2024 Connected Consumer report.

How to decide whether a simpler gadget fits your life
- Identify the specific problem. Decide whether you want fewer alerts, less access to feeds, a break from a particular app, or a more deliberate routine. A device change is most useful when it addresses a clear source of friction.
- List the phone functions you rely on. Include communication, payment, navigation, work, government services, and account authentication—not just the apps you use for entertainment.
- Compare the limits with the likely workarounds. If the simpler handset means carrying a smartphone as well, or adding several separate devices, consider whether that trade-off still serves your goal.
- Check local compatibility before purchasing. Confirm network bands, carrier support, and availability for the exact model and country. A device’s limited features are useful only if it can still handle the essentials you need.
For some people, a feature phone may be the right boundary; for others, limiting notifications or changing app habits may preserve essential smartphone access with less disruption. The choice is personal and depends on what a person needs their device to do.
