Why Some Asteroids Spin Faster Than Others

Asteroids rotate at different speeds because collisions and sunlight-driven YORP torques alter their angular momentum, while density and internal strength determine how fast they can safely spin.

Some asteroids rotate faster because their spin is the combined result of collisions, sunlight-driven torques, density, shape and internal strength. A collision can add or remove angular momentum in seconds, while the YORP effect can gradually accelerate or brake an irregular asteroid over millions of years. The often-quoted 2.2-hour asteroid “spin barrier” applies mainly to a cohesionless, gravity-bound rubble pile of representative density—not to every asteroid.

What an asteroid’s spin rate actually measures

A rotation period is the time an asteroid takes to turn once. A shorter period means a faster spin; frequency expresses the same behavior as rotations per day. Astronomers usually obtain the period from a repeating light curve: as an irregular body rotates, different faces reflect different amounts of sunlight, producing a measurable pattern.

Spin rate is not a permanent label assigned at formation. It is a physical record of an asteroid’s history. The present rotation reflects the angular momentum delivered by impacts, later collisions that may alter it, the body’s shape and thermal properties, and whether its material can resist the stresses created by rapid rotation.

Two processes set most asteroid spins

Impacts deliver angular momentum

Collisions are the quickest way to change an asteroid’s rotation. An impact that misses the center of mass applies a torque, adding angular momentum and potentially speeding the target up. An impact from the opposite direction can slow the target or change its spin-axis orientation. A sufficiently energetic collision can fragment the body; the pieces inherit a distribution of spin rates rather than one common value.

Impact modeling helps explain why asteroids that formed in the same broad era do not all rotate alike. In a 1997 study of catastrophic collisions, a modeled remnant made from an initially non-rotating silicate asteroid ended up rotating about 2.9 times per day. That is a model result for a specified collision, not a universal prediction for every impact or every asteroid.

Sunlight changes spin through YORP

Over much longer periods, sunlight can change an asteroid’s rotation through the Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack effect, usually called YORP. The asteroid absorbs sunlight and later emits thermal radiation. Because an irregular body has uneven surfaces, slopes and thermal behavior, the outgoing radiation does not push equally in every direction. The imbalance creates a tiny torque.

Repeated over many rotations, that torque can accumulate. Depending on the asteroid’s exact shape, orientation and thermal response, YORP can accelerate the spin, slow it, or alter the spin axis. It is not a one-way “spin-up” mechanism. A shape that produces acceleration at one stage can evolve into a state where the torque weakens, changes sign or drives a different axis orientation.

NASA describes YORP as capable of accelerating small bodies until they begin to break apart. The effect is strongest for relatively small asteroids because a given radiation torque has more influence on a low-mass object. Shape details matter so much that two asteroids of similar size and composition can evolve in opposite directions.

Why the 2.2-hour spin barrier is only an approximation

For a loose, cohesionless body held together primarily by its own gravity, rapid rotation creates an outward centrifugal acceleration. At the equator, enough speed can reduce effective gravity until surface material begins to move outward. For a representative density of 2.7 grams per cubic centimeter, NASA’s 2023 institutional history describes the classical boundary as approximately a 2.2-hour rotation period.

This is a population boundary for a particular physical model, not a universal hard cap. The critical period changes with bulk density: a denser body has stronger self-gravity and can tolerate a faster spin, while a less dense body reaches failure at a slower rate. Internal friction, voids, shape and the distribution of mass also matter.

Rubble piles versus coherent rocks

Many asteroids are thought to be “rubble piles”—collections of fragments held together largely by gravity and weak friction. Such a body has little tensile strength, so rapid rotation can cause landslides, equatorial shedding or gradual mass loss near the approximate barrier.

A small monolithic rock or a compact fragment can rotate far faster. Chemical bonds and material strength supply cohesion that gravity alone lacks, allowing the object to withstand stresses that would disperse a loose aggregate. Some larger exceptions may also retain enough cohesion to exceed the simple rubble-pile limit. Therefore, observing a period shorter than 2.2 hours is evidence that the cohesionless model is incomplete for that object, not proof that the measurement is wrong.

Density helps create different spin distributions

Bulk density affects the gravity-versus-rotation balance, and asteroid populations do not all have the same typical density. A 1997 impact-modeling paper reported mean spin frequencies of 2.2 rotations per day for C-type asteroids, 2.5 for S-types and 4.0 for M-types. The authors interpreted that pattern as reflecting increasing mean density across those classes.

Those figures are class averages from that study, not current complete-catalog averages and not predictions for an individual asteroid. Taxonomic class is a useful population clue, but porosity, mineralogy, shape and collisional history can produce substantial variation within every class.

Asteroid class Mean spin frequency in the 1997 study How to interpret it
C-type 2.2 rotations per day Study average; associated by the authors with lower mean density than the other listed classes
S-type 2.5 rotations per day Study average; a population result, not an individual-object forecast
M-type 4.0 rotations per day Study average; interpreted in that paper as consistent with higher mean density

Real examples of spin changing over time

Bennu and Ryugu

NASA reports that Bennu rotates about once every four hours and Ryugu about once every seven hours. The Lucy mission team’s account says both likely rotated more slowly in the past and that sunlight-driven YORP helped change their spins. NASA Science summarizes the team’s interpretation this way: “Thus, YORP can slow asteroid spins down or speed them up, as in the case of Bennu (once every four hours) and Ryugu (once about every seven hours), which both likely used to rotate much slower than they do today.” The statement describes an interpretation of their evolution, not a claim that every asteroid follows the same path.

Donaldjohanson

In a 2026 report, NASA’s Lucy team estimated that Donaldjohanson was rotating at least ten times faster when it formed than it does now. They estimate that YORP then slowed the asteroid over roughly 20–60 million years. This is a mission-team estimate for that object, illustrating that a spin rate can evolve substantially after formation rather than remaining fixed.

Why size, shape and internal structure interact

Size changes the balance of forces

Size affects both gravity and the effectiveness of external torques. Larger bodies generally have stronger self-gravity, but their greater mass also makes a given sunlight torque harder to accelerate. Small bodies can therefore show rapid YORP evolution, while a larger object may change more slowly unless its shape produces a particularly strong torque.

Shape controls the direction of YORP

A perfectly symmetric sphere would cancel much of the directional thermal recoil. Real asteroids have ridges, craters, boulders and uneven slopes. Those features determine where sunlight is absorbed and where heat is emitted, setting the sign and strength of the YORP torque. As impacts or surface movement alter the shape, the torque can change too.

Structure determines the response to rapid rotation

Two objects with the same period can face different physical outcomes. A compact, strong fragment may remain intact, whereas a porous aggregate at the same period could shed grains or experience an equatorial landslide. Internal cohesion is not directly visible from a light curve, so researchers combine rotation, size, density estimates, radar shape models, spacecraft observations and dynamical modeling.

How scientists decide why one asteroid spins faster

A useful comparison separates what is measured from what is inferred. Researchers typically work through the following questions:

  1. What is the rotation period? Is it an observed light-curve period, a spacecraft measurement or a modeled value?
  2. How certain is the size and density? Density may come from a measured mass and volume or from estimates with significant uncertainty.
  3. What is the taxonomic class? C-, S- and M-type labels provide population context, but they do not determine an individual asteroid’s spin.
  4. What structure is plausible? A period near or below the cohesionless limit raises the question of whether the object is a rubble pile, a coherent fragment or a body with non-negligible cohesion.
  5. What collisions shaped it? A recent breakup or catastrophic impact can explain an unusual angular momentum state.
  6. Has YORP been measured? A directly detected change in period is stronger evidence than an inference based only on shape or long-term modeling.

This framework prevents a common mistake: assigning a single cause to a spin rate that may reflect several processes acting on different timescales.

Common misconceptions about asteroid rotation

“Every asteroid is a rubble pile.”

No. Some asteroids are loosely bound aggregates, while others are coherent rocks or retain enough internal strength to behave differently. Assuming one structure makes the 2.2-hour value look more universal than it is.

“The spin barrier means no asteroid can rotate faster.”

The approximate 2.2-hour value applies to a cohesionless, gravity-bound case under representative assumptions. Density, shape, cohesion and material strength can move the failure threshold, and small strong bodies can exceed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“YORP always speeds asteroids up.”

YORP can accelerate or decelerate rotation and can change the spin axis. Its direction depends on the individual body’s shape and thermal properties and may evolve as the surface changes.

“A class average predicts an individual asteroid.”

The C-, S- and M-type frequencies reported in the 1997 paper describe modeled population trends. They should not be used as a lookup table for a particular object without considering that object’s density, structure and history.

The practical answer

Some asteroids spin faster than others because no single clock controls them. Impacts establish and reset angular momentum; YORP gradually modifies it; density sets the strength of self-gravity; shape determines the sunlight torque; and internal cohesion decides whether the body can survive rapid rotation. The observed period is therefore both a measurement and a clue to an asteroid’s composition, structure and past.

When evaluating a fast spinner, start with the measured period, then ask whether its density and structure can support that rate. Treat the 2.2-hour figure as an approximate rubble-pile benchmark, use taxonomic averages only as broad population context, and distinguish directly observed YORP changes from mission estimates and collision models. That approach explains why two asteroids formed in the same region—or even from the same parent body—can end up rotating at very different speeds.
