A Chromebook can support Android apps while still being unable to install a particular app. The cause may be the Chromebook model, the app’s device requirements or Play Store filters, a school or work restriction, or an extended-updates choice that removed Android support. Start by checking whether the Play Store is supported on the Chromebook at all; then diagnose the individual app.
Does your Chromebook support Android apps?
Google Play is available on only some Chromebook models. On the Chromebook, open Settings > Apps and look for Manage Google Play preferences. Google says that if this option is missing, that Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Keep ChromeOS up to date, but do not assume that another model from the same brand has the same support.

Google’s administrator guidance says Chromebooks launched after 2019 support Android apps, while older devices should be checked against its device information. For an individual Chromebook, the Settings check and its current update state are more useful than relying on the brand or launch year alone. Google’s Chromebook instructions explain how to check Play support.

Why can one app be missing when the Play Store works?
Play Store results are filtered for each device and account. A developer can exclude Chromebooks or target only devices that meet requirements for Android version, screen size, location, mobile service provider, or other criteria. Compatibility can change as developers update those rules. So an app missing from Chromebook search does not, by itself, mean the Play Store is broken.

Google notes that a device may also appear grayed out as incompatible in the web Play Store. Check the app’s own support information and requirements; if the reason remains unclear, ask the developer whether that Chromebook model is supported. See Google Play’s compatibility guidance and its help page on apps you can’t download on a Chromebook.
What does “Your device is not compatible with this version” mean?
It means the particular app’s compatibility conditions are not met by the Chromebook, not necessarily that Android apps are unsupported across the whole device. One possible cause is missing hardware: Google gives the example of an app requiring GPS when the Chromebook has no GPS. Other apps may require a particular Android version, screen size, or location.

Hardware and input requirements can affect usability even after installation. A non-touch Chromebook may let you use mouse clicks in place of touch, but that does not guarantee an app is optimized for a mouse and keyboard. Apps may also depend on a touchscreen, stylus, auto-rotation, resolution, continuous internet access, memory, or other resources. Installation and a fully working experience are separate questions. Google’s Chromebook app deployment guidance describes requirements to consider.

Yes. An administrator can disable Play Store access or limit which Android apps users may install. On a managed Chromebook, an empty Play Store can mean the organization has not approved any Android apps, rather than a device fault. Ask the school or employer administrator whether Play Store is enabled and whether the app is approved; do not try to bypass the managed setup.

For schools deploying apps, Google recommends trying a web app first when both web and Android versions are available, and testing Android apps on a small number of managed Chromebooks before wider deployment. Android apps install locally and use device storage. Google’s deployment guidance covers these considerations.
Did extended updates remove Android support?
On eligible Chromebook models released before 2021, Google’s extended-updates program provides up to ten years of automatic updates from the platform release; some models require opting in during their final support years. The extended-updates choice does not include Android apps or the Play Store: opting in removes both, and erases Android app data from the device.

If the user does not opt in, Google Play and Android apps remain, but individual app developers may stop supporting the device over time. That is different from Google removing Play support as a result of the extended-updates choice. Check the exact model’s support status and update setting before concluding why Play has disappeared. Details are in Google’s extended-updates guidance.

How to diagnose the problem
- If the Play Store crashes or will not load: Check the internet connection, restart the Chromebook, and install available ChromeOS updates. These steps address a store-loading problem, not an app compatibility restriction.
- If “Manage Google Play preferences” is absent: The Chromebook does not support Android apps according to Google’s Settings check. Also check whether extended updates were enabled on an eligible older device.
- If only one app is missing or marked incompatible: Look up its requirements and developer support information. Consider Android version, device model, screen and input requirements, hardware such as GPS, and location-based availability.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer: Ask the administrator whether Play Store access is enabled and the app is approved.
- If the app installs but behaves poorly: Check whether its input, display, hardware, internet, memory, and storage requirements are met. A web version may be a better option when available.
Google’s troubleshooting steps for Play Store problems are in its Chromebook Android-app help. The key distinction is whether the Chromebook lacks Android support, the app excludes that device, organization policy blocks it, or the store itself is temporarily failing.
