What did Somalia’s president say?
On December 31, 2025, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somalia did not want Israel to come and “bring their problem” to the country. Anadolu Agency reported the remarks after Israel recognized Somaliland. Mohamud warned that an Israeli presence could bring regional conflicts closer and raised the risk of Somaliland being used as a proxy to attack others’ interests. In an interview reported on February 8, 2026, Mohamud made his opposition to a military base explicit, saying Somalia would “never allow” one in Somaliland and would “confront” such a move. He also said, “We will fight in our capacity. Of course, we will defend ourselves.” These are statements of Somalia’s position and a warning about its response, not evidence that a base deal exists. Why does Somalia object?
Somalia’s federal government regards Somaliland as part of Somalia. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 and has governed itself separately; the status dispute remains unresolved. The Associated Press reported that Israel recognized Somaliland on December 26, 2025, the first recognition by any country, and that Somalia rejected the move. Somalia’s Foreign Ministry described Hargeisa as part of Somalia and condemned official Israeli engagement there without federal consent. In its January 6, 2026 statement, the ministry said such engagement was “illegal, null, and void.” That wording expresses the Somali government’s legal position; it is not an independent court ruling. It is important to distinguish four different claims: Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, the Israeli foreign minister’s visit, a possible security arrangement, and an actual military facility. The first two are reported events; the latter two are not established by the cited accounts. Somalia’s opposition to any base is clear, but that opposition does not prove a base plan exists.

Somalia condemned the January 6 visit and sought support from other governments and regional bodies. A joint statement published by Somalia’s Foreign Ministry listed foreign ministers, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the League of Arab States among its signatories, and reaffirmed support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
