A 2026 molecular-clock study estimates that animals may have originated roughly 800–700 million years ago, before the Ediacaran Period. That interval is a model-based result sensitive to fossil calibration choices—not evidence that animal fossils from that time have been found, or proof that animals were already present then.
When did animals first evolve?
The study by Orin M. Lole Durbin and colleagues, published in Science Advances on October 2, 2026, revisits how molecular-clock analyses set the oldest possible dates for animal lineages. Its analyses using older, pre-Ediacaran deposits as candidate maximum calibrations support an origin of Metazoa—the animal kingdom—during the late Tonian to mid-Cryogenian, approximately 800–700 million years ago.
This is an estimated divergence interval conditional on the study’s models and calibration choices. It is not a date directly observed in animal body fossils. The authors’ argument is that animal lineages could have a longer evolutionary history than the currently cited body-fossil record reveals.
Why do different kinds of evidence give different dates?
The study describes a mismatch between evidence types: lipid biomarkers suggest animals originated before 635 million years ago, while the body-fossil record cited by the authors extends to about 574 million years ago. These observations do not measure the same thing, and neither should be mistaken for the molecular-clock estimate.

Biomarkers and fossils are evidence from the geological record; a molecular clock estimates when lineages diverged using genetic data and calibrations. A difference among their dates is therefore not automatically a contradiction. It can reflect preservation gaps as well as the assumptions used to convert genetic differences into geological time.
Why does the Weng’an Biota matter for molecular clocks?
A maximum-age calibration is used to constrain how old a lineage can be in a molecular-clock analysis. The study questions whether the Ediacaran Weng’an Biota of China is a reliable maximum calibration for animal origins. The concern is that a deposit without definitive animal fossils does not necessarily show that animals had not yet evolved: their remains may not have been preserved there, or the assemblage may not capture the relevant organisms.

To test that reasoning, the authors compare Weng’an with Mongolia’s Kheseen Biota. The deposits have similar preservation and microfossil assemblages, and neither contains definitive animal fossils. Yet Kheseen dates to approximately 550–526 million years ago, when animals were already present.

The comparison weakens the inference that Weng’an’s lack of definitive animal fossils proves animals had not yet evolved. It does not demonstrate that Weng’an is invalid under every possible calibration model. Rather, it highlights how a maximum calibration can be uncertain when it relies on fossil absence: preservation and ecological context affect what a deposit records.

How much do calibration choices affect a molecular clock?
Molecular clocks do not produce a geological date from genetic differences alone. Fossils and other calibration assumptions anchor the estimates in time. The authors emphasize that the accuracy and precision of the resulting dates hinge on maximum-age calibrations; changing those constraints can change the inferred divergence dates and their uncertainty.
Durbin and colleagues report Bayesian calibration-sensitivity analyses using MCMCTree, a program in the PAML package. They compare multiple calibration scenarios, including analyses using older deposits. The approximately 800–700-million-year interval is the reported outcome associated with those older candidates, not a calibration-independent date for animal origins. The available study abstract and data record do not establish a single precise birth date.

Could animals have evolved before the Ediacaran?
Yes, the study’s analyses support that possibility: their estimated interval predates the Ediacaran. But the result remains an inference from a molecular-clock model and chosen calibrations, not a fossil discovery. First author Orin M. Lole Durbin cautioned, “Pre-Ediacaran animal body fossils still elude us, and this analysis does not prove that animals existed 800 million years ago.” Ross P. Anderson likewise said, “Until that evidence becomes available, the precise birth date of the animal kingdom remains uncertain.”
Where can readers examine the analysis data?
The study’s data, published in the Dryad repository on August 20, 2026, include scenario files, molecular alignments, tree and calibration inputs, MCMCTree configurations and outputs, and documentation of model variants. The repository describes these materials as supporting reproducibility and independent evaluation of the calibration-sensitivity analyses.
