A settlement batch may be dated differently from an authorization because authorization and capture are separate events. Providers commonly use a configured capture cut-off or sales-day boundary to assign captured payments to batches; the authorization timestamp alone does not determine that assignment. The exact rule depends on the processor, so a report grouped by authorization date may not match settlement detail.
Why can a batch show a different date from the authorization?
An authorization records approval or a hold on funds. Capture is the merchant’s instruction to submit the final amount for settlement. A payment authorized before a cut-off but captured after it may therefore enter a later batch under that processor’s rules. Authorize.net describes a previously authorized transaction that is captured as remaining captured and pending settlement until its next batch (Authorize.net transaction capture states).

This is not a universal rule that every processor batches strictly by the capture calendar date. Providers can define operational days using a configured cut-off, a sales-day boundary, or another account-specific schedule. The relevant question is which event and boundary the provider uses to assign the captured transaction.

A processor’s operational day may not run from midnight to midnight. If a payment is authorized before the close but captured afterward, the provider’s configured rules may place it in the next batch. A non-midnight close can also make a capture just after midnight belong to the prior sales day, or a capture earlier on the clock belong to the next one. These are consequences of the provider’s boundary and timezone, not a general card-network rule.

Authorize.net: a configured transaction cut-off
Authorize.net says automatic batches occur after the account’s configured Transaction Cut-Off Time. Its support page lists 4:00 PM Pacific Time as the default. In its example, a 3:00 PM cut-off covers captured transactions from 3:00 PM the previous day through 2:59:59 PM that day. The page also warns that changing the cut-off to a time less than 24 hours after the last settlement can delay settlement of the current batch. These details apply to Authorize.net’s documented setup, not to other processors (Authorize.net batch timing and cut-off).
Adyen: a configured sales day
Adyen defines a sales day as a 24-hour period in which it processes payments. By default, it runs midnight to midnight in the balance account’s local timezone, but the closing time can be configured. Adyen says funds captured within a sales day are assigned to settlement batches related to that sales day (Adyen settlement and sales-day documentation).

JPMorgan Payments: a business-day close
For its host-based payment terminal application, JPMorgan Payments says transactions are stored through a business day and automatically settled into a batch after that day closes. The backend settlement time is configured for the account; the documentation says the default is in the early morning and settles the previous day’s transactions. This is another provider-specific implementation, not a general batching standard (JPMorgan Payments settlement documentation).
Which dates should you distinguish?
Capture date, batch date, settlement date, and bank funding date describe different points in the payment flow. Batch assignment reflects the provider’s operational grouping; settlement and funding can occur later. Settlement delays, working-day calendars, and bank holidays can move settlement or funding without changing the sales day to which a capture was assigned. Adyen, for example, says settlement runs on working days excluding bank holidays and documents weekend and holiday delays (Adyen settlement and sales-day documentation).

Authorize.net says most merchants with a positive balance can typically expect funding 2–3 business days after settlement. That is the support page’s provider-specific expectation, not a universal guarantee or a measure of time from authorization (Authorize.net batch timing and cut-off).
How to reconcile transactions across a day boundary
- Keep lifecycle timestamps separate. Preserve both authorization and capture timestamps; do not overwrite one with the other.
- Check the processor’s operating boundary. Confirm the configured cut-off or sales-day close, its timezone, and how the provider handles business days and holidays.
- Match transaction detail to settlement detail. Use transaction-level identifiers and processor batch identifiers or settlement references where available, rather than relying on a calendar-date total alone.
- Reconcile settlement movements separately. Compare captured transactions with processor settlement detail, then compare settlement movements with balance or bank records. Treat expected value or settlement dates as provider-defined fields, not replacements for the original transaction timestamps.
- Allow for multiple batches. If the provider can create more than one batch in a day, reconcile using dates together with transaction and reference keys. Adyen notes that date-level generation can be easier when multiple batches occur in one day.
Adyen’s documented approach uses Authorization and Capture webhooks for merchant-account transactions. Its Capture webhook includes a settlementReference and expectedValueDate; Adyen also describes combining webhooks with reports from the payment and balance sides. These fields can help connect transaction activity to settlement records, but their meanings and availability are provider-specific (Adyen balance reconciliation documentation).

Provider behavior at a glance
| Provider and scope | Batch qualification and boundary | Settlement or funding timing |
|---|---|---|
| Adyen | Captured funds are assigned to batches associated with a sales day. The day uses the balance account’s local timezone; its close can be configured. | Settlement timing is separate from sales-day assignment; settlement runs on working days excluding bank holidays. |
| Authorize.net | Automatic batching follows captured transactions and the configured Transaction Cut-Off Time; the documented default is 4:00 PM Pacific Time. | The support page says most merchants with a positive balance can typically expect funding 2–3 business days after settlement; actual timing varies. |
| JPMorgan Payments terminal application | Host-based processing stores transactions through the business day and settles them into a batch after the configured close. | The backend settlement time is account-configured; the documentation describes a default in the early morning for the previous day’s transactions. |
These examples show why a single “batch date equals capture date” rule is unsafe: operational boundaries and reporting fields vary by provider. Check your processor’s account configuration and settlement documentation before changing a reconciliation rule.
