Semiconductor fabs use cleanrooms because modern chips are built through hundreds of tightly aligned steps in which a microscopic particle, chemical residue, or other impurity can interfere with a wafer surface. The result may be a defective die, a lower wafer yield, or a device that works initially but fails to meet reliability requirements later.
A cleanroom is not simply a room with very good air filters. It is part of a wider contamination-control system covering air, people, tools, process chemicals and gases, ultrapure water, containers, equipment chambers, and material handling. Air classification tells you how many airborne particles are present in specified size ranges; it does not prove that every surface is clean or that every chemical contaminant has been controlled.

What a semiconductor cleanroom actually controls
ISO 14644-17:2021 reproduces the ISO 14644-1:2015 definition of a cleanroom as a “room within which the number concentration of airborne particles is controlled and classified, and which is designed, constructed and operated in a manner to control the introduction, generation and retention of particles inside the room.” That definition captures three jobs: limiting what enters, limiting what is generated inside, and preventing contamination from remaining where it can reach a product.
In a fab, that means managing airflow, filtration, pressure relationships between spaces, worker behavior, equipment design, cleaning, maintenance, and the movement of wafers and materials. Some facilities also control chemical contamination, molecular residues, temperature, humidity, vibration, and other conditions when a particular process requires it. Those controls are related to cleanroom operation, but they are not all represented by an airborne-particle class.

Wafers are normally moved in enclosed containers or automated systems rather than exposed to open factory air at every step. Tools receive carefully specified electricity, gases, chemicals, and ultrapure water. An overhead automated material-handling system may move wafer containers between tools. Intel’s Fab Tour illustrates this integrated factory arrangement, although individual fabs differ in layout, automation, and process requirements.
Why chip manufacturing is unusually sensitive to contamination
A chip is made by repeatedly depositing, patterning, etching, cleaning, implanting, and inspecting thin layers on a wafer. Each cycle changes the surface and creates new opportunities for a contaminant to interfere. A defect can also become buried under later layers, making the original cause difficult to identify and potentially affecting every die in the area.
Smaller device features and increasingly complex three-dimensional structures leave less tolerance for unwanted material. The Semiconductor Industry Association’s 2023 background paper describes trace particles, impurities, and other unwanted materials as sources of wafer-yield and device-reliability problems. The critical point is not that every particle destroys a chip. Whether a contaminant matters depends on its size and composition, where it lands, the process step, the exposed structure, and the product’s quality requirements.
Where contamination comes from
Room air is only one pathway. A fab must control contamination introduced by people, equipment, process inputs, and logistics.
| Source | How it reaches a wafer or tool | Possible consequence | Typical controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workers and the surrounding environment | Skin flakes, fibers, particles on garments, and disturbances caused by movement | Particles settle on exposed wafers or enter a tool | Gowning, hygiene rules, controlled movement, training, airflow management, and restricted access |
| Fab air | Airborne particles carried into a process area or recirculated within it | Residues or physical defects during coating, exposure, deposition, or inspection | Filtration, pressure control, directional airflow, monitoring, and room design |
| Tools and process equipment | Wear debris, chamber deposits, corrosion products, or particles released during maintenance | Repeated defects on wafers processed by the same chamber | Equipment maintenance, chamber cleaning, qualification, and component monitoring |
| Process chemicals and gases | Impurities in the material, contaminated delivery lines, or reactions that create residues | Chemical defects, altered film properties, or reliability problems | Purity specifications, point-of-use filtration, controlled distribution, and sampling |
| Ultrapure water | Impurities introduced during generation, distribution, or use for wafer rinsing | Deposits, corrosion, or surface defects after cleaning | Water purification, loop monitoring, filtration, and controlled handling |
| Packaging and delivery systems | Particles or residues from containers, piping, seals, and transport equipment | Contamination transferred into a tool or onto a wafer | Validated containers, cleaning, sealed delivery, inspection, and maintenance |
The SIA describes airflow management, ambient-air filtration, worker gowning and hygiene, enclosed wafer containers, and equipment maintenance as examples of broad controls. These measures work together; room filtration alone cannot prevent contamination released by a dirty chamber, an impure chemical, or a damaged container.

How one tiny particle can become a chip defect
Consider a wafer entering a lithography step. A photoresist coating is applied, a pattern is projected, and the exposed resist is developed so that later etching can transfer the pattern into an underlying film. If a particle sits on the wafer before coating, it can create a raised spot, a thin region, or a shadowed area. The resulting pattern may have a missing line, a shorted line, an unwanted opening, or an edge that is out of specification.
The same basic mechanism appears in other steps:
- Deposition: A particle on the surface can prevent a film from forming uniformly or can become embedded in the film.
- Etching: A contaminant can mask an area that should be removed, leaving an unwanted bridge or residue.
- Cleaning: A chemical or particle can redeposit on a surface, or a residue can remain after rinsing.
- Implantation and thermal processing: A foreign element can change local electrical behavior or create a defect that later becomes active.
- Interconnect formation: A defect in a narrow metal line or insulating layer can create an open circuit, a short, or a weak point that fails under stress.
A particle may land in a noncritical field, be removed before a sensitive step, or have no measurable effect. ISO terminology therefore treats a “critical particle size” as relative to product or process quality rather than as a universal cutoff. There is no single particle diameter that always kills a chip, and no fixed particle-to-feature ratio applies to every technology.

Yield and reliability are related but different
ASML defines yield as the proportion of functioning chips on a wafer. If contamination causes some dies to fail electrical tests, the wafer produces fewer saleable chips even though the wafer itself may have completed every manufacturing step.
Reliability is a different outcome: whether a device continues to meet its specifications over time and under use. A contaminant may not cause an immediate test failure but can weaken an interconnect, alter a transistor, or create a defect that becomes active during temperature cycling or electrical stress. The SIA identifies both yield and reliability as possible consequences, but the relationship is not a universal percentage that can be applied to every fab.
What ISO cleanroom classes measure—and what they do not
ISO 14644-1:2015, Edition 2, classifies air cleanliness by airborne particle concentration measured with light-scattering particle counters at designated sampling locations. Its classification thresholds cover particle sizes from 0.1 micrometres to 5 micrometres. ISO’s page reported that this edition, published in December 2015, was last reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remained current at the time of that status check; standards status should be verified because it can change.

The classification is an air-counting framework, not a guarantee of a defect-free wafer. ISO 14644-1 does not classify the physical, chemical, radiological, viable, or other nature of particles. It also does not characterize particle populations outside its stated size range. A room can meet an airborne count while a process chemical contains an unwanted molecule, a tool chamber has a deposited residue, or a vulnerable wafer surface receives particles that were not captured by the room-level measurement.
There is also no single ISO class that every semiconductor fab uses. Required cleanliness depends on the process, product, equipment, room design, and risk assessment.
Airborne concentration versus surface deposition
Counting particles in the air and measuring what settles on a surface answer different questions. Airborne concentration describes what is suspended at sampling points. Deposition describes the contamination that reaches a vulnerable surface over a period of operation.
ISO 14644-17:2021 addresses particle deposition rate as a contamination-control concern. It notes that large particles can be lost in sampling tubes or behave differently from the particles a counter is designed to measure. The standard cites figures that, for particles above 10 micrometres, more than 50% may be removed from the air by surface deposition, while above 40 micrometres more than 90% may be deposited. These percentages are attributed to ISO 14644-17 and the studies it references; they are not a universal prediction for every room or process.
Deposition measurements near a vulnerable surface can therefore support risk assessment and monitoring. ISO 14644-17 is not itself a cleanroom-classification method for deposition rates. It complements, rather than replaces, airborne classification.

How fabs build a contamination-control system
Airflow and filtration
Filters remove particles from supplied or recirculated air, while airflow patterns reduce the chance that contamination moves from a dirtier activity toward an exposed wafer. Pressure differences can make air flow from cleaner areas toward less-clean areas when doors or openings are used. The exact arrangement varies by facility and process.
People and garments
Operators follow gowning sequences that cover hair, skin, clothing, and footwear. Gloves and masks reduce direct transfer, but they do not make a person an unlimited source-free object. Movement, talking, improper gowning, and touching a surface can still create risk, so training, access control, and procedural discipline matter.
Enclosed wafer handling
Sealed wafer containers and automated handling reduce exposure during transport. They also make it possible to control where a container is opened and to trace which tools and lots handled it. Enclosure reduces one pathway; it does not eliminate contamination generated inside the processing tool.
Tool and chamber maintenance
Process chambers accumulate films and by-products. Maintenance plans remove deposits, replace worn parts, verify particle performance, and qualify the tool before production resumes. A component that appears mechanically sound can still shed particles or hold residues, so cleanliness checks are part of equipment control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMaterials, chemicals, gases, and water
Purity specifications and monitoring extend through the entire delivery chain. A clean container does not compensate for contaminated gas, and a high-quality chemical can be compromised by a dirty line or seal. Ultrapure-water systems require continuous attention because the water is used directly on wafer surfaces.

How fabs detect contamination and protect yield
Particle counters monitor air at defined locations, while surface or deposition measurements address what reaches exposed surfaces. Process engineers also inspect wafers for defects, correlate defect maps with tools and chambers, and check whether a problem appears after a particular material, maintenance event, or process step.
SEMI reported in June 2023 that particle contamination on critical chamber components in wafer-processing and inspection equipment can severely affect wafer and device yield and reliability. The article described measurement approaches being developed as SEMI standards at that time, including extracting particles with ultrapure water followed by liquid particle counting, and removing particles with a replacement adhesive substrate followed by optical metrology and elemental analysis. Because that description concerned standards development in June 2023, it should not be read as confirmation that every method had already become a finalized standard.
Inspection and metrology provide the feedback loop. ASML’s technical explanation describes optical diffraction-based metrology and electron-beam inspection as ways to assess printed patterns, locate defects, and analyze their causes. Manufacturers can feed those measurements back into process adjustments, helping distinguish a random defect from a systematic problem tied to one chamber, material, or handling route.

What happens after a contamination event
Fabs generally treat an unexpected particle excursion as a containment and diagnosis problem rather than immediately assuming that every affected wafer is unusable. A response can include:
- Holding affected lots and recording the time window of the excursion.
- Comparing defect maps and inspection results across tools, chambers, and material lots.
- Checking recent maintenance, chemical changes, water-system alarms, container handling, and operator activity.
- Inspecting or cleaning the suspected chamber, delivery path, or handling equipment.
- Running qualification wafers or other verification checks before releasing the tool to production.
- Tracing whether the issue could affect reliability even when electrical yield appears normal.
The exact procedure is fab-specific. The key principle is to connect contamination evidence to a process step and vulnerable surface, then verify the corrective action with measurements rather than relying on room air counts alone.
Why cleanrooms cannot guarantee perfect yield
Cleanrooms reduce contamination risk; they do not remove every possible source or ensure that every die will function. Defects can arise from process variation, patterning errors, material properties, equipment drift, electrical overstress, and other causes unrelated to particles in room air. Even contamination that is present may be harmless if it lands in a noncritical location or is removed before a sensitive step.
That is why fabs combine environmental controls with process control, equipment qualification, chemical and water purity programs, wafer inspection, metrology, electrical testing, and reliability evaluation. Yield is the outcome of the whole manufacturing system, not a direct readout of one cleanroom particle count.
The practical takeaway
Semiconductor cleanrooms exist because contamination control must be continuous across the entire wafer journey. Air filtration and classification are essential, but they are only one layer. People, tools, chamber parts, chemicals, gases, ultrapure water, containers, and automated handling can all introduce unwanted material. A particle becomes a yield or reliability threat only in relation to the process and surface it reaches, which is why fabs measure both airborne conditions and actual defect outcomes.
