Why Self-Host GitLab on Your Own VPS Instead of Using GitLab.com

Self-hosting GitLab on a VPS provides control over data, networking and software configuration, but makes you responsible for sizing, security, upgrades, backups and downtime. Here is how to decide.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Self-host GitLab on a VPS when control is worth operating a production service. GitLab.com is a ready-to-use SaaS platform; GitLab Self-Managed gives you responsibility for the server, data location, network, identity integration, upgrades, security, backups, and recovery. The right choice depends less on the monthly server invoice than on your compliance needs, workload, tolerance for downtime, and willingness to run Linux infrastructure.

GitLab.com and a VPS change who operates the system

GitLab describes its two options plainly. With GitLab.com, “You don’t need to install anything to use GitLab.com, you only need to create a user account and start using GitLab straight away.” With GitLab Self-Managed, you “Install, administer, and maintain your own GitLab instance.” Those are different operating models, not merely two ways to pay for the same product. See GitLab’s subscription comparison for the current service definitions.

Decision area GitLab.com GitLab Self-Managed on a VPS
Initial setup Create an account and configure a group or project; no server installation. Provision a Linux VPS, install GitLab, configure DNS, TLS, mail, storage, authentication and runners.
Upgrades and patches GitLab operates the service and its maintenance windows. You schedule and execute GitLab, operating-system and dependency updates, then verify the result.
Incident response GitLab handles the underlying platform; you still handle project and pipeline issues. You investigate the VPS, network, storage, database, Redis, Sidekiq, GitLab and runner layers.
Data and network control Use GitLab’s SaaS regions, controls and integrations. Choose the provider, region, firewall, private networks, ingress rules, identity path and storage locations.
Backups and restores Covered by the SaaS service’s operating model, subject to its terms. You design retention, off-site copies, encryption, restore tests and disaster recovery.
Capacity Scale within the service’s plans and limits. Size and resize your own CPU, memory, SSD, database, registry and backup capacity.
Downtime tolerance You depend on GitLab’s availability and maintenance processes. You control maintenance timing but bear the outage risk when an upgrade, disk or network fails.

Self-hosting therefore makes sense when a specific control requirement outweighs the work of owning the entire service. If the priority is immediate use and minimal infrastructure work, GitLab.com is normally the better fit.

Reasons to choose a self-managed VPS

Keep data in a required location

A VPS lets an organization select a country or region, define which networks can reach GitLab, and keep repositories, artifacts and registries within an approved environment. That can simplify contractual, residency or internal-segmentation requirements. It does not automatically make an installation compliant: you must still configure access controls, encryption, logging, retention and incident procedures.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Control identity and network integration

Self-managed GitLab can be placed behind your firewall or private network and connected to identity, DNS, SMTP, VPN and monitoring systems under your control. You can restrict administrative interfaces, expose only the required HTTPS and SSH endpoints, and decide how runners reach GitLab and deployment targets. SaaS integrations may be sufficient for many teams, but a private route or a nonstandard identity architecture can justify running the service yourself.

Choose the software and maintenance window

You decide when to apply a GitLab release, when to schedule downtime and which operating-system hardening rules to enforce. This is useful when change control requires a tested maintenance window or when an internal platform team needs a particular integration. It also means you are accountable for applying security updates rather than waiting for a provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isolate development infrastructure

A dedicated VPS can keep source code, package registries, container images and CI metadata separate from other tenants. Isolation is valuable for a sensitive internal environment, but a single VPS is still a single failure domain unless you add independent backup, monitoring and recovery infrastructure.

Use capabilities available in your chosen edition and plan

Feature availability depends on the GitLab edition and subscription you deploy. Self-management gives you a place to configure the edition and integrations you have licensed, but it does not make paid features free. Confirm the current feature and license terms before selecting an architecture.

The operating burden you accept

Running GitLab is closer to operating a small application platform than installing a simple web app. GitLab’s package deployment includes PostgreSQL, Redis and Sidekiq, all of which must remain healthy alongside the web service and repository storage. You are responsible for:

  • Linux updates, firewall rules, SSH access, TLS certificates and administrator accounts.
  • GitLab upgrades, release sequencing, configuration changes and rollback planning.
  • CPU, memory, disk space, filesystem latency, database health and queue backlogs.
  • Monitoring, alerting, log retention, vulnerability response and abuse controls.
  • Runner registration, concurrency limits, build cache and the security of CI jobs.
  • Backup schedules, off-site retention, encryption and tested disaster recovery.

GitLab warns that “Your GitLab instance contains critical data for your software development or organization.” Treat the VPS as a production system even if it starts with one developer. A low-cost server does not remove the cost of an administrator’s time or an outage.

How much VPS capacity GitLab needs

GitLab’s current installation requirements list an 8-vCPU baseline for a single-node installation. That is a baseline, not a promise that every workload will perform well at that size. CPU and memory demand rises with user count, request rate, CI/CD concurrency, repository and LFS size, mirroring, package and container registries, and background jobs. Consult the current GitLab installation requirements before ordering a server.

Resource What to plan for Why it changes
CPU At least 8 vCPUs for the documented single-node baseline. Web requests, Git operations, repository maintenance, database work, Sidekiq jobs, imports, mirroring and concurrent pipelines compete for CPU.
Memory Use the requirements page and leave headroom rather than sizing to a minimum alone. PostgreSQL, Redis, Rails workers, search-related services and CI activity can create simultaneous peaks.
Primary storage Persistent SSD-backed storage sized beyond current repository data. Repositories, LFS objects, artifacts, uploads, registries, Pages and Terraform state grow independently; filesystem performance affects responsiveness.
Network Reliable ingress and egress with enough bandwidth for clones, pushes, releases, runners and registry traffic. Large repositories, images, mirrors and parallel jobs can make bandwidth or egress the limiting cost.
Backup capacity Separate space or a remote destination for compressed archives and retention copies. A backup must not consume the only free space on the live disk or disappear with the VPS.

Do not treat “VPS” as shorthand for a tiny instance. A small proof-of-concept may run on less than the published baseline, but the documented 8-vCPU figure is the sensible starting point for a supported single-node design. Add capacity before enabling high CI concurrency, large registries, frequent mirrors or many active users. Track CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk latency, available space, HTTP response time and Sidekiq queue depth so that resizing follows measurements rather than guesswork.

Choose a deployment method that matches your skills

Linux package: the conventional VPS path

For a conventional VPS, GitLab’s Linux package is the mature, scalable route. It bundles PostgreSQL, Redis and Sidekiq and gives you a documented installation and upgrade path. It is generally the least complex choice when you have one server and want GitLab’s components managed together. Follow the options in GitLab’s installation-method guide, then set DNS, TLS, outbound mail, firewall policy and backup destinations before inviting users.

Helm on Kubernetes: only with an operating platform

The Kubernetes-based Helm deployment is appropriate when your team already operates Kubernetes, persistent volumes, ingress, upgrades and observability. Kubernetes does not eliminate administration; it spreads GitLab across more moving parts. Without cluster expertise and tested monitoring, a package installation on a well-sized VPS is usually easier to recover.

Backups are part of the product decision

GitLab’s backup documentation states that a self-managed instance needs a disaster-recovery plan and regular backups. The archive can include database data, Git repositories, LFS objects, job artifacts, package and container registries, uploads, Pages data, Terraform state and other project data. It is not a complete copy of every operational secret, so plan separate protection for configuration files such as /etc/gitlab, TLS certificates, SSH keys and any external object-storage data. Read the backup and restore overview and the detailed GitLab backup procedure.

A practical backup runbook

  1. Define recovery targets. Decide how much data you can lose (RPO) and how long GitLab may be unavailable (RTO). Those answers determine frequency, retention and the size of your recovery environment.
  2. Run the GitLab backup command on a schedule. A typical package installation uses sudo gitlab-backup create; confirm the command and configuration for your installed release in GitLab’s documentation.
  3. Send archives away from the VPS. GitLab documents S3-compatible storage, Google Cloud Storage, Azure and locally mounted destinations. Use a separate account or bucket policy, encryption and retention controls.
  4. Protect configuration and keys separately. Copy /etc/gitlab, TLS material, SSH host keys and any object-storage configuration to an encrypted, access-controlled location.
  5. Keep rotating copies. An external SSD is useful for encrypted, offline or recovery-staging copies, but it should complement an off-site copy rather than be the only backup.
  6. Test restoration. Restore on an isolated system using the same GitLab version and the same Community Edition or Enterprise Edition type as the source. Record the steps and measure the elapsed recovery time.

GitLab explicitly requires restore compatibility: a backup can be restored only to the same GitLab version and the same CE/EE type from which it was created. Align upgrade plans with backup testing; do not upgrade production and discover during an incident that the archive cannot be restored to the available version.

Provider, storage and cost considerations

The provider affects more than the headline VPS price. Check the region, SSD performance, snapshots, backup retention, bandwidth and egress pricing, support response, private networking and recovery options. DigitalOcean documents Droplets as Linux virtual machines. Its backup documentation lists weekly and daily backup intervals for basic plans at percentage-based prices, while usage-based plans charge by restorable GiB; verify current rates for your region and plan in the Droplet pricing documentation and backup pricing documentation.

Published figure Qualification Planning implication
20% of Droplet cost DigitalOcean’s documented weekly backups for basic plans; pricing can change. Add recurring backup cost to the server budget instead of comparing only the compute invoice.
30% of Droplet cost DigitalOcean’s documented daily backups for basic plans; verify current plan terms. Higher frequency reduces potential data loss but raises the recurring bill.
Seven backup slots at 20% of server price Figure published in Hetzner Cloud API documentation, accessed in 2026. Slots and retention may be useful for short-term rollback, but they are not a substitute for an independent off-site disaster-recovery copy.

Your total cost of ownership also includes remote backup storage, snapshots, bandwidth and egress, monitoring, administrator hours, security response, maintenance windows and the business cost of downtime. A VPS can look cheaper than a SaaS subscription while becoming more expensive once those obligations are counted.

CI/CD runners and workload isolation

GitLab stores projects and orchestrates pipelines, but runners execute jobs. Decide whether runners live on the GitLab VPS, on separate VMs, in Kubernetes or on ephemeral workers. Co-locating runners is simple but lets a burst of builds consume CPU, memory, disk and network needed by GitLab itself. Separate runners improve isolation and make capacity easier to scale, while adding machines, registration management and another security boundary. Treat untrusted pipeline code as potentially hostile: use least-privilege credentials, protected variables, restricted network access and disposable workers where appropriate.

A staged plan for deploying GitLab on a VPS

  1. Inventory the workload. Count users, repositories, LFS usage, artifacts, registry images, expected pipeline concurrency, mirrors and growth over at least a year.
  2. Set recovery objectives. Choose RPO, RTO, retention and an off-site destination before creating the server.
  3. Select region and provider. Verify data-location requirements, SSD-backed storage, network limits, backup pricing, support and recovery controls.
  4. Provision headroom. Start from GitLab’s 8-vCPU single-node baseline, allocate persistent SSD capacity for every data class and leave room for growth and backup staging.
  5. Install the package or Helm chart. Use the package for a conventional single VPS; use Helm only when Kubernetes operations are already mature.
  6. Harden access. Configure firewall rules, SSH keys, TLS, administrator MFA, least privilege, update policy and restricted runner permissions.
  7. Configure observability. Alert on disk space, filesystem latency, memory pressure, CPU saturation, failed backups, certificate expiry, database health and Sidekiq queues.
  8. Automate and test backups. Schedule archives, copy them remotely, protect configuration and run a full restore drill on a matching version and edition.
  9. Document upgrades and rollback. Record release order, maintenance steps, health checks, backup verification and the version to restore if an upgrade fails.
  10. Load-test ordinary peaks. Exercise clones, pushes, merges, concurrent pipelines, registry transfers and artifact downloads before making the instance a dependency for the whole team.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

“The VPS is cheap, so GitLab will be cheap”

Ignoring backup storage, egress, monitoring and staff time produces an incomplete budget. Price the complete operating model and include the financial impact of an outage.

Running out of disk space

Repositories are only one data class. Artifacts, LFS, uploads, registries, Pages and backup archives can fill a disk unexpectedly. Set alerts, define retention policies and keep backup staging separate from the live filesystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backups that cannot be restored

An archive copied to the same VPS is not disaster recovery. A backup made on one release may not restore to another, and missing /etc/gitlab or keys can leave data unusable. Keep off-site copies and perform version-matched restore drills.

Upgrading without a rollback path

Schedule maintenance, verify a fresh backup, read the release-specific upgrade notes and retain a tested procedure for returning to the prior version. Never assume a snapshot alone replaces an application-consistent GitLab backup.

Letting CI jobs starve GitLab

Unbounded runner concurrency can exhaust CPU, memory or disk I/O. Set concurrency limits, monitor queue depth and move heavy or untrusted jobs to separate workers.

Choosing Kubernetes for prestige

Helm adds operational value when Kubernetes is already a supported platform in your organization. Otherwise it can increase recovery time and the number of components you must understand during an incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When GitLab.com is the better answer

Use GitLab.com when your team wants to start immediately, has no requirement for a privately controlled network or data location, and would rather spend engineering time on software than on patching, monitoring and recovery. SaaS also avoids sizing a single server and maintaining a restore environment. You still configure projects, permissions, runners and pipelines, but GitLab operates the underlying service.

When self-hosting is justified

Choose a VPS when a documented requirement for data residency, network isolation, identity integration, software control or organizational ownership outweighs the administration burden. Before committing, name the person or team responsible for updates, security incidents, backups and after-hours recovery; if nobody owns those tasks, the control benefits are theoretical.

Bottom-line decision framework

  • Choose GitLab.com for the fastest start, minimal infrastructure work and a preference for provider-operated availability.
  • Choose GitLab Self-Managed on a VPS when you need control of location, networking, identity, configuration or isolation and can operate a production Linux service.
  • Do not choose solely on monthly compute price. Include SSD growth, backup copies, egress, monitoring, administration, security response and downtime.
  • Do not deploy without recovery evidence. A scheduled backup, protected configuration and a successful restore on the same version and edition are prerequisites, not optional refinements.
