A scrolling screenshot can overlap, repeat, or omit rows around a video because the stitcher is trying to track two kinds of movement at once: the page moving as you scroll and the video changing inside the page. If the video’s motion confuses the stitcher’s image matching, it can estimate the wrong scroll distance. For moving content, a screen recording is usually the better capture; for a tall still, use scroll capture only where your device and app support it, then check the result.
Why a video can confuse a scrolling screenshot
A scrolling screenshot is assembled from successive views. To join them, the capture system estimates how far the page moved between frames by comparing image content. A playing video changes independently of the page, so the comparison includes motion that does not represent scrolling.

In an account of one stitching app’s implementation, its developer explains that a coherently moving video can create a second plausible match for the image offset: the video’s own movement. If the video contains more textured pixels than the rest of the view, a whole-frame or majority-pixel comparison may favor that false match. The stitcher then places page content at the wrong vertical position, producing overlaps or repeated or missing rows. Codnet Software Company describes this failure mode and its implementation-specific tests.
Why masking the video is not always enough
A straightforward fix might seem to be ignoring rows that are moving. But the developer warns that a motion check based on the previously accepted offset can fail: if the offset is already wrong, the video may appear aligned and still, while the page appears to have moved. The movement test can therefore misclassify which part of the image is reliable.

The proposed alternative is to divide the visible band into slices and look for a shared scroll offset supported by multiple slices. If the slices do not agree sufficiently, the stitcher should reject that frame rather than commit to an ambiguous position. This is a proposed approach with results reported by the app’s developer, not a verified guarantee for every screenshot feature or app.
What the reported results do—and do not—show
Codnet Software Company reported tests in 2026 for its implementation. In a synthetic case with a coherently panning video occupying 76% of the viewport, misplaced rows across three seeds changed from 10, 30, and 2 before the proposed change to 0, 1, and 11 afterward. In one real captured session, re-emitted rows changed from 1,056 to 0. These are limited implementation-specific results, not an independent benchmark or a measure of how often video feeds break scrolling screenshots generally. No broad prevalence rate across devices, apps, or operating systems is established.

Scrolling screenshots depend on the device and the content
On Android, Google says its scrolling-screenshot instructions apply to devices running Android 12 and up, “on most screens that allow you to scroll.” After taking a screenshot, tap Capture more and select the content to include. The qualification matters: availability depends on whether the screen supports the feature, and it should not be assumed to work on every feed. Android’s ScrollCaptureCallback API, added at API level 31, describes how the system looks for a suitable scrolling container and asks it for rendered content, including content beyond the currently visible area. That design helps explain why support depends on the scrolling content and its implementation; it is not a promise that every dynamic feed can be captured as one tall image. Apple’s current iPhone capture-settings guide covers screenshot and screen-recording settings and file formats, but does not describe extending a screenshot through arbitrary feed content. It should not be treated as evidence that every iPhone app or iOS version supports—or lacks—long screenshots. Apple’s guide lists the capture settings it documents.
Choose a recording for motion, a still for a static reference

On Android, the built-in recording controls are available through Quick Settings; the help page describes optional audio and showing touches. On iPhone, Apple documents screenshot and recording settings, including format differences: SDR screenshots use PNG and SDR recordings use HEVC; HDR screenshots use HEIF and HDR recordings use HEVC (HDR10). Those are documented formats, not a claim that one option is universally better in image quality.

Do not confuse a stitching error with a display hitch
A stitching error is a wrong estimate of how the page moved between captured views. A display hitch is a rendering delay: a frame appears later than expected, which can make scrolling stall and then jump. Apple developer Patrick, speaking from Apple’s performance team, describes that behavior as a repeated frame followed by a later frame arriving. A hitch can affect what appears in captured frames, but it is a separate issue from a stitcher choosing the wrong offset. Apple’s developer session explains display hitches and frame timing.

What to do when a tall capture looks wrong
- If the video’s changing content matters, make a screen recording instead of relying on a stitched still.
- If you need a still, use the device’s built-in scrolling screenshot only when it is offered for that screen, then inspect the full image for duplicated or omitted rows.
- If you are developing a stitcher, treat independently moving regions as possible outliers in scroll estimation. Use agreement across multiple regions and reject frames when the page-motion evidence is ambiguous.
