Tempered-glass screen protectors are strengthened, not unbreakable. An impact, edge chip, uneven pressure, poor fit, wear or temperature change can start a fracture. A crack can appear even when you do not remember dropping the phone, but its pattern alone cannot reveal the exact cause—or prove the protector saved the display.
Why a strengthened glass protector can still crack
Chemical strengthening puts the outer surface of glass under compression while leaving tension in its interior. That stress profile helps the glass resist damage, but if an impact or another stress initiates a fracture, it can still break. The International Crystal Engineering Association describes this mechanism in its report on glass impact performance.

Impact and vulnerable edges
A drop or collision can crack a protector, including from an edge impact. A small chip at an edge can also become a starting point for a larger fracture. OtterBox lists impacts and edge damage among possible causes; these are troubleshooting possibilities, not a way to diagnose a particular crack from appearance alone.
Fit, installation and pressure
A protector that is the wrong size or sits unevenly may be more exposed to stress at its edges. Uneven or excessive pressure during application, or handling that puts pressure on the glass, may also contribute. Samsung notes that some third-party films can fit poorly, adhere poorly or become damaged quickly, and that they may affect touch response, fingerprint recognition or display quality on Galaxy devices.

Case contact, wear and temperature
If a case lip overlaps or catches the protector edge, it may lift that edge; a lifted area can be vulnerable to further damage. This is a possibility raised in specialist retailer troubleshooting advice, not evidence that cases generally crack protectors. Wear, temperature extremes and handling are also listed as possible contributors, but there is no established universal lifespan or quantified likelihood for each factor.
Foldable phones need model-specific care
A protector not designed for a folding phone may be stressed as the device bends. For a foldable or a phone with a factory-installed film, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model rather than removing or replacing the film as if it were an ordinary glass protector.

What a crack does—and does not—tell you
The crack’s location can help you inspect the phone, case and installation, but it is not a forensic test. Check where the crack starts, whether an edge is lifting, whether the phone was recently dropped or squeezed, and whether the case touches the protector. None of those clues establishes a single cause with certainty.

What to do with a cracked or lifting protector
Replace damaged glass
OtterBox recommends replacing a protector with cracks, chips, scratches or lifting edges. A cracked protector should not be treated as fully protective. Follow its manufacturer’s removal instructions, since handling guidance varies by product. Spigen, for example, says its own GLAS protector holds cracked pieces together and suggests a stiff card for removing its thicker glass protectors; that guidance should not be generalized to other products.
Choose and install a replacement carefully
- Confirm the exact phone model and generation; check screen curvature and the edge coverage the protector offers.
- Check that the protector is compatible with your case and that the case lip will not overlap or catch its edge.
- Follow the protector maker’s installation steps on a clean surface, using any alignment aid provided and avoiding uneven pressure.
- For a Galaxy phone, consider Samsung’s warning that some unauthorized films may affect fit, display quality, touch or fingerprint recognition. For foldables and factory-installed films, consult the phone maker’s model-specific guidance before removal or replacement.
No protector can be promised to prevent cracking. Tempered glass can crack; flexible films may bend or peel instead. The available sources do not provide controlled comparative performance tests establishing that one material is universally more protective.
