A scheduled screenshot can show yesterday’s price because the capture ran before the retailer updated the page, the scheduled run was delayed or skipped, a cache served an older page or image, or the price had not finished loading when the browser took the shot. The key is to separate the page’s state from the screenshot file’s state: a new image can capture stale page content, and a current page can still appear old through a cached image.
Check the capture time and run status first
Compare the image’s actual capture timestamp with the scheduled time. Account for the schedule’s configured time zone and cadence; the time you opened or downloaded the image does not tell you when it was captured. Check the run history for success, failure, skip, pause, or delay. Scheduling tools such as Site-Shot describe schedule health and recorded capture times, while Allscreenshots documents recurring capture history.

If the run happened before the retailer changed the price, the image may be correct for its capture time even though it is no longer current. If there is no successful run at the expected time, investigate the schedule or job health before changing cache settings.
Separate screenshot-image caching from page caching
There are two different places an old price can persist: the screenshot image delivered by its URL, and the product page rendered by the capture browser. Test them separately. Request a fresh capture and inspect its timestamp, then check whether the returned image URL or CDN is still delivering an earlier file. Conversely, a newly generated image can still show stale content if the browser received an old page.

Image or CDN cache
Some screenshot services cache fixed image URLs. For example, ScreenshotEngine says an evergreen screenshot image may be cached for up to 12 hours. Capture documents a 24-hour CDN edge cache for screenshot storage and a fresh option that bypasses its screenshot cache. These are provider-specific policies, not universal cache durations; check the documentation for the service you use.
Retailer page or platform cache
The retailer’s own page-generation and cache path may be behind the current price. Salesforce Commerce documentation says public-page snapshots are taken every 15 days, with incremental snapshots for newly added pages every 24 hours, and describes taking a manual snapshot for time-sensitive information such as flash-sale prices. Those intervals describe Salesforce Commerce’s snapshot service, not all storefronts. A vendor support article also lists browser or ISP caching as possible reasons an old price appears, while noting that cache is not the only explanation.

Check whether the price finished loading
Product pages often render prices dynamically. If the capture occurs before the price element updates, the screenshot can preserve an earlier value or an incomplete page state. Compare captures while adjusting the wait condition: try waiting for the price selector, a short delay after the page loads, or network idle if your capture tool supports those options. Avoid adding a long fixed delay without evidence; it can slow every run and still fail when load times vary.

Confirm you are comparing the same offer
A different displayed number does not necessarily mean the retailer changed the base price. Compare the same product and variant, region, currency, promotion, stock state, shipping terms, and account or session conditions. A screenshot comparison detects changed pixels; it can alert on a banner, layout shift, availability message, or other visual change without establishing that the numeric price changed.
A practical diagnosis sequence
- Record the evidence: note the screenshot timestamp, intended schedule, time zone, image URL, and run status from the monitoring tool’s history.
- Verify the schedule: determine whether the run completed at the intended cadence or was skipped, failed, paused, or delayed.
- Test image delivery: request the image again or use the provider’s documented fresh/bypass option, if available. Compare its timestamp or content with the stored screenshot.
- Test page freshness: open the product page under the same region, session, and variant conditions as the capture. If the source page itself is stale, an image-cache change will not fix it.
- Test render timing: wait for the price element or add a modest post-load delay, then compare output and capture duration.
- Validate the offer: confirm variant, currency, promotion, availability, shipping, and session conditions before treating the difference as a price change.
When choosing or adjusting a monitoring workflow
For reliable price monitoring, assess capture cadence, visibility into actual run history and failures, geography and session controls, cache-bypass options, retention and export of timestamped captures, and whether the workflow can validate price text as well as compare pixels. Capabilities differ by provider, so verify them in current documentation. No general prevalence figure establishes how often screenshots show a previous day’s price; the cause in any one case depends on the provider, URL, timestamp, schedule, and run history.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It can accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
