Ryobi battery bars can fall quickly under a demanding tool load and may rise again when the load stops. Temperature and battery-protection behavior can also affect performance or the indicator. A bar change by itself does not prove that the battery is faulty: the gauge indicates charge, not battery health or usable capacity.
Why the bars can change
Heavy loads and battery capacity
A demanding tool can draw down a lower-capacity pack quickly or cut out under load. Ryobi Australia gives a 2Ah battery powering a lawn mower as an example and suggests considering a larger pack, such as 4Ah or 8Ah, for demanding tools. Those are examples, not a rule that every tool needs a particular capacity. Ryobi says a higher amp-hour (Ah) rating generally provides longer runtime. Ryobi’s cutout guidance and performance troubleshooting recommend comparing with another fully charged battery.

Temperature and protection
Repeated or heavy use can heat a pack enough to trigger protective shutdown. Ryobi Australia advises letting a hot battery cool for about 30 minutes before reuse or charging. Cold can also reduce performance or cause shutdown. Follow the manual for your exact battery: limits and instructions differ between product families, so a temperature specification from one model should not be applied to another. The cited 18V ONE+ manual, for example, gives cold-weather guidance down to -10°C; that is product-specific, not a universal Ryobi limit. Ryobi Australia’s cutout guidance and the Ryobi manuals library provide model-dependent instructions.
The indicator is not a health test
Ryobi uses different displays across battery platforms. The cited 18V ONE+ manual describes charge-indicator ranges, while the 80V manual describes a state-of-charge display. The manuals also describe product-specific sleep, shut-off, and temperature-delay behavior that can affect whether a pack operates or displays normally. These details are reasons not to diagnose a battery from one button press; they do not establish why a particular pack’s bars moved. The 80V manual says lithium-ion tools will not gradually lose power as charge decreases, but that statement is not a guarantee that a tool cannot cut out under load or that every gauge is exact. See the manual for your model.

Contacts, charger, tool, or wear
Dirty external contacts can interfere with charging, and an abnormal reading or shutdown may be caused by the charger or tool rather than the pack. Batteries also wear over time. Ryobi’s guidance recommends trying compatible tools or chargers to isolate a problem; it does not provide a universal bar-drop threshold or capacity test that proves a battery is defective. Ryobi’s troubleshooting guidance and the model manuals are the appropriate starting points.
How to troubleshoot safely
- Note the conditions. Record the battery and tool model, voltage platform, approximate battery age, task, temperature, and whether the symptom occurs only during heavy work.
- Let a hot pack cool. Before charging or reuse, follow the battery’s manual and allow it to cool. Ryobi Australia lists 10°C–37°C for storage or charging locations in its charging guidance; this is regional advice, and the exact manual for your model takes precedence. Ryobi Australia’s charging guidance.
- Inspect external contacts with the pack removed. Turn the tool off, remove the battery, and wipe visible dirt from the contacts with a dry cloth. Do not scrape or bridge the terminals, and do not open the pack. Ryobi’s charging guidance.
- Compare like with like. If available, try a fully charged compatible pack in the same tool and task, or try the suspect pack in another compatible tool. If the issue follows the pack, contact Ryobi or authorized service; if it stays with one tool, the tool may need attention. Ryobi performance troubleshooting.
- Check the charging path. If charging is abnormal, try another compatible charger if available and follow its manual. If the problem remains, ask Ryobi or authorized service for an assessment rather than assuming a new battery is the fix. Ryobi support.
- Check warranty before replacing anything. Warranty and service routes vary by country. Ryobi’s US page directs warranty replacement requests through customer service and out-of-warranty replacement purchases through The Home Depot; use the instructions for your region. Ryobi US warranty information.
When to consider a replacement
Consider a replacement only after a compatible-pack comparison points to the battery and you have checked its warranty. Match the voltage platform and confirm compatibility with the exact tool. Then choose capacity according to the tool’s demand and the runtime you want; higher Ah generally means longer runtime, but no single capacity is right for every tool. If the evidence points to charging rather than battery wear, a compatible charger or service assessment may be the better next step.

Do not disassemble a lithium-ion pack, replace internal cells, or try an improvised jump-start or bypass. Ryobi manuals warn against pack disassembly and require compatible chargers. For longer-term storage, follow the exact manual: the cited 18V ONE+ and 80V manuals each recommend storing at 30%–50% charge, but their instructions apply to different product families. Recycle end-of-life packs through an appropriate battery-recycling route. Ryobi manuals and Ryobi support.
