A scrub is not, by itself, a mission cancellation or a payload-loss event. Teams secure the vehicle, assess the cause, and decide whether they can recycle for another window, need repairs and retesting, or must stand down for longer.
What happens to the payload depends on the vehicle, launch site, condition of the hardware, and mission plan. In many operations it remains integrated with the launch vehicle while teams inspect and prepare for another attempt, but there is no universal rule that payloads always stay aboard, are always removed, or require a fixed amount of reprocessing.

Scrub versus hold: two different countdown outcomes
A hold pauses the countdown
A hold is a planned or unplanned pause in countdown operations. Controllers can stop the T-minus sequence while teams complete work, wait for a range to become available, or align events with a launch window. NASA explains that during some holds, T-minus time stops while elapsed L-minus time continues. That distinction lets teams preserve the overall countdown schedule without declaring the attempt over. NASA’s Artemis II wet-dress rehearsal description illustrates this countdown logic.
A scrub ends that attempt
A scrub is the decision not to launch during the current countdown. NASA’s historical Apollo 13 prelaunch report defines it as “a termination of the countdown.” The same report uses turnaround for the time needed to recycle and count down toward a later opportunity, assuming no serial repairs are required. Those are useful definitions, but current procedures differ among providers and vehicles. A scrub therefore tells you what happened to today’s attempt, not automatically what will happen to the mission.

NASA summarized the decision plainly during its Artemis I rehearsal coverage: “Sometimes called a ‘scrub,’ launch controllers may decide not to proceed with launch if a technical or weather issue arises during or prior to the countdown.”
Why launch controllers scrub a countdown
Technical readings or hardware problems
Controllers scrub when instrumentation, software, engines, tanks, valves, communications systems, or other hardware produce data that cannot be understood or corrected safely within the remaining countdown. A component can be recoverable and still force a scrub if engineers need more time to diagnose it, gain physical access, replace a part, or repeat a test.
During NASA’s Aug. 29, 2022 Artemis I attempt, teams dealt with weather-related delays to propellant loading, a hydrogen leak, and an engine-conditioning issue. The mission’s two-hour launch window expired before the problems could be cleared. NASA then reported that engineers were reviewing the launch-attempt data in its post-scrub update.

Weather outside the mission’s limits
Launch weather rules are vehicle- and mission-specific. Conditions that can stop a countdown include storms, thick clouds, high winds, wind shear, lightning risk, or other combinations that would make ascent or an emergency abort unsafe. NASA’s Crew Launch and Return Operations reference describes the need for acceptable weather near the pad and along the flight path, while noting that exact criteria depend on the mission.

Weather can also delay earlier work. If a storm prevents safe fueling or keeps crews away from the pad, the countdown may lose too much time to reach launch conditions even if the skies improve later.
Range and public-safety constraints
A launch corridor must be protected before ignition. Controllers coordinate with range authorities and clear aircraft, boats, and other traffic from affected areas. If the range cannot confirm that the corridor is safe, or if a public-safety system is unavailable, the launch cannot proceed. These constraints apply even when the rocket itself is performing normally.
The launch window closes
Every mission has a permitted period for launch. Orbital geometry, the destination’s position, lighting requirements, communications coverage, range availability, and vehicle limits can all shape that window. A rocket may be technically ready but unable to launch after the window expires. Artemis I’s Aug. 29 attempt had a two-hour window; once that period ended, continuing the countdown could not produce a valid mission.

What happens immediately after a scrub
The exact sequence depends on how far the countdown progressed and which systems were active. A typical response follows this pattern:
- Declare and communicate the scrub. The launch director or mission-management team records that the current attempt is over and announces the reason known at that time, such as weather, a technical reading, or a closed window.
- Place the vehicle in a safe configuration. Teams stop the countdown and perform the vehicle-specific steps needed to make tanks, ground equipment, electrical systems, and the launch area safe. If cryogenic propellants are aboard, the team may retain, replenish, or drain them according to the vehicle’s procedures.
- Collect and preserve data. Engineers examine telemetry, recordings, sensor trends, and ground-system logs. NASA described this data review after the Artemis I scrub rather than treating the decision as the end of the investigation.
- Classify the cause. Managers determine whether the issue is understood, whether it can be cleared by analysis, and whether a repair, replacement, inspection, or repeat test is required.
- Check the next opportunity. Range availability, weather forecasts, orbital geometry, workforce limits, and vehicle constraints determine whether another attempt is possible later that day, the next day, or much later.
- Issue a mission-specific recovery plan. The provider states whether the vehicle will recycle, return to a maintenance configuration, undergo repairs, or stand down. Payload handling is included in that plan when it affects the schedule or hardware.
Not every scrub reaches the same physical state. A weather decision early in the countdown may require little more than waiting for a new window, while a late technical scrub after fueling can involve extensive draining, inspection, and testing.
What happens to the payload?
The payload is the spacecraft, cargo, satellite, crew vehicle, or other mission hardware the rocket is intended to deliver. A scrub does not define its fate. In many operations, the payload remains attached to the launch vehicle while teams diagnose the problem and prepare for another attempt. In other cases, the mission plan may call for access, removal, transport to a processing facility, or additional servicing. Public announcements often describe only the next launch date and do not provide a detailed payload-handling account.
| Scrub situation | Possible payload treatment | What determines the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Weather stops the attempt before a vehicle issue is identified | The payload may remain integrated while the team waits for another opportunity. | Weather duration, vehicle condition, site rules, and the next available window. |
| A technical issue requires inspection or repair | The payload can remain with the vehicle, or teams can separate hardware if access or testing requires it. | Fault location, contamination or safety controls, vehicle design, and the provider’s procedures. |
| Cryogenic fueling has already occurred | Teams may drain or otherwise safe the propulsion system before preparing the integrated vehicle for another attempt. | Propellant type, thermal limits, vehicle configuration, and the mission’s documented recycle process. |
| A long stand-down is required | The payload may enter a separate processing or maintenance flow rather than staying at the pad. | Repair duration, environmental controls, battery or servicing requirements, and launch-site logistics. |
NASA’s Artemis I wet-dress rehearsal shows why no single rule fits every mission. The team practiced stopping the countdown and draining cryogenic propellants, then prepared the integrated rocket and spacecraft for follow-up work. That is a procedure for that vehicle and rehearsal, not a blanket instruction for all rockets. NASA’s rehearsal report documents the operation.

How long does recovery take?
Quick recycle
A short weather delay or a cleared data-quality concern can permit a relatively quick recycle if the launch window and range remain available. “Quick” is mission-specific: a provider may target another attempt later the same day, the next day, or after a scheduled hold.
Repair and retest
If engineers cannot clear a fault by analysis, technicians may replace hardware, repair a leak, update software, or repeat a functional test. The next launch date is then set by the work required, not by the original countdown clock. NASA’s historical Apollo 13 report separates ordinary turnaround time from additional serial-repair time for this reason.
A new launch window or campaign
Some missions must wait for a particular orbital alignment or range slot. Others can launch on multiple days. A provider may announce a target date before all technical reviews are complete, but that target remains conditional until the vehicle and range are cleared.

Artemis I: a technical and weather stand-down
On Aug. 29, 2022, NASA’s Artemis I team faced weather delays during propellant loading, a hydrogen leak, and an engine-conditioning problem. The two-hour window closed, so the mission could not launch that day. Engineers then assessed the data and mission managers met to decide what inspections and corrective work were needed. The example shows how a scrub can combine several causes and lead to analysis before a new date is announced.

Swift servicing mission: a weather postponement
NASA reported that the June 30, 2026 launch of a servicing spacecraft intended to boost the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was postponed because of unfavorable weather. A new opportunity was targeted for the following day, as described in NASA Science’s mission update. This is an example of a planned retry after a weather scrub, not proof that every launch can return to the pad within 24 hours.
STS-1: a historical computer problem
The first Space Shuttle launch attempt was scrubbed after a computer issue, followed by repair and a later attempt. NASA’s historical account, “40 Years Ago: The Countdown Begins for STS-1”, illustrates why a scrub announcement should be read as the start of a troubleshooting process rather than as a verdict on the payload.
How to interpret a launch update
When a provider posts that a launch was scrubbed, look for five details:
- Cause: Was the decision driven by weather, a technical reading, the range, or the launch window?
- Countdown state: Had fueling begun, and did the team mention draining or safing the vehicle?
- Payload status: Did the provider say the spacecraft remains integrated, is moving to processing, or needs inspection?
- Next opportunity: Is the date firm, a target, or dependent on engineering review and weather?
- Required work: Are teams recycling, repairing, replacing hardware, or waiting for another orbital opportunity?
If an announcement gives only a weather reason and a tentative date, do not infer that the payload was removed or that the vehicle is ready for immediate launch. If it cites a leak, engine, computer, or other hardware issue, expect additional inspection or testing unless the provider explicitly says the problem was cleared.
How common are scrubs?
There is no single, comparable scrub rate established by the NASA material cited here. Launch providers use different definitions, weather rules, countdown designs, and reporting practices, so a percentage from one vehicle or launch site would not describe the industry as a whole. The useful facts are operational: one mission may have a two-hour window, another may have several daily opportunities, and a technical scrub may require anything from a data review to a major repair campaign.
Key takeaway
A scrub ends one launch attempt so controllers can protect people, hardware, and the mission. The payload is not automatically lost or damaged; its treatment is decided case by case after engineers assess the vehicle, the cause of the scrub, and the next safe launch opportunity.
