Why QLC SSDs Can Slow Down as They Fill Up

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A QLC SSD is not literally two drives. It is one drive that may use part of its flash temporarily in a faster, one-bit-per-cell mode to absorb writes. That cache is finite; on some designs, its dynamic portion shrinks as the drive fills. If a long write outpaces the cache and the drive’s background work, write speed can drop toward the slower native QLC rate.

What the “two drives” idea really means

QLC NAND stores four bits in each cell. To handle a burst of incoming data faster, an SSD controller can temporarily operate some NAND in pseudo-SLC mode, storing one bit per cell. The controller later folds that data into denser QLC mode. This is a temporary operating mode inside one SSD—not a second physical drive. Intel’s 2018 white paper on the SSD 660p, commissioned by Intel and authored by Shrout Research, describes both a static cache and a dynamic SLC cache. Intel 660p white paper

Using cells in one-bit mode trades storage density for faster writes: those cells temporarily hold less data than they can in QLC mode. The cache therefore has a capacity limit, and its size and behavior depend on the drive’s design.

Why the fast cache can shrink as the drive fills

Some SSDs allocate part of their available space dynamically to pseudo-SLC caching. As more of the drive’s capacity is occupied, less space may be available for that dynamic cache. The Intel 660p is a documented example, not a universal template for QLC drives.

In the 2018 Shrout Research paper, the Intel 660p’s maximum dynamic cache was approximately 14% of total drive capacity. For its 1TB model, the chart lists the following available cache by used-capacity band:

Intel 660p capacity used Available dynamic cache
0–25% 140 GB
25–35% 127 GB
35–45% 102 GB
45–55% 76 GB
55–65% 50 GB
65–75% 25 GB
Above 75% 12 GB

These are historical figures for the 1TB Intel 660p, not a specification for other capacities, generations, or QLC SSDs. A different model can use a different cache policy and capacity.

Why a big file copy can slow down

A burst that fits within the available cache can be written quickly. During or after the burst, the SSD has to fold cached data into QLC mode. If incoming data keeps arriving faster than the cache can be cleared, the cache can fill and the drive may have to write more directly at its native QLC rate. Intel’s older paper describes sustained QLC writes as slower than TLC writes; the actual post-cache rate varies by model, capacity, firmware, NAND generation, workload, and fill level.

That is why a short transfer may look fast while a much larger continuous copy slows partway through. Idle time can give the controller an opportunity to fold data, so results may also differ between one long write and several bursts separated by pauses. There is no single cache size, drop point, or “QLC speed” that applies to every drive. An indexed summary of AnandTech’s Samsung 870 QVO review reports a sharp post-cache drop, but the full review was not available to verify test numbers, so no specific benchmark figure is appropriate here. Does an SSD slow down when it is nearly full?

It can, if its design relies on a dynamic cache whose available space falls as capacity is used. The Intel 660p chart demonstrates that pattern for that particular drive. It does not establish a general curve for QLC SSDs—or prove that every nearly full SSD will slow down by the same amount.

Free space is only one part of the picture. Cache policy, drive capacity, firmware, workload, and how much data is being written all affect what a user sees. Do not infer a specific cache size from the QLC label alone.

Is QLC fine for gaming or everyday use?

QLC can make sense for read-heavy or bursty consumer use when the drive’s capacity and price suit the buyer. That is a workload-based inference from how caching behaves, not a guarantee for every model. Short everyday writes or game loading are different from repeatedly copying very large files; sustained writes are where cache exhaustion is more likely to matter.

People who routinely write large files, use a scratch disk, or run other write-heavy workloads should look for independent, model-specific testing that shows long-write behavior after the cache is exhausted. A model’s advertised burst performance does not answer that question.

How to compare QLC SSDs for sustained writes

  • Post-cache write rate: Look for repeatable long-write tests and note the test conditions, rather than relying on a peak burst figure.
  • Cache behavior at realistic fill levels: Check whether the cache is static, dynamic, or uses another policy. A useful test identifies the drive capacity and how full it was at the start.
  • Your workload: Distinguish occasional bursts and read-heavy use from repeated large sequential writes or scratch-disk work.
  • Capacity: Cache design may differ between capacities of the same product family. Do not assume it scales linearly.
  • Endurance and warranty: Compare each model’s published endurance rating and warranty terms; QLC alone does not establish how long a particular drive will last.
  • Platform fit and overall value: Confirm interface, form factor, capacity, and current price for your system and region.

QLC designs are not all the same

QLC is a description of how many bits a cell can store, not a complete account of an SSD’s write behavior. In a current product example, Micron says its 2600 SSD uses Adaptive Write Technology with dynamic SLC, TLC, and QLC modes. Micron says the design aims to improve write performance while retaining QLC economics; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparative test. Micron 2600 SSD product page

The same distinction matters when interpreting capacity claims. Shrout Research’s 2018 Intel paper says QLC stores 33% more data per cell than TLC. That is a per-cell comparison in that paper, not evidence that an entire QLC drive provides exactly 33% more usable capacity than a comparable TLC product.

TRIM and garbage collection are separate parts of SSD data management; Samsung’s support information does not establish that enabling TRIM guarantees a particular cache size or write speed. Samsung SSD FAQ
