On Android’s Termux, Proton Pass CLI failed during login with NoDefaultStore because its Linux-default keyring provider could not initialize in that environment. I fixed the Termux package so Android no longer selects that provider by default. That account describes my change; I have not independently verified the current package recipe or the pull request’s review status.
What failed on Android
Proton’s CLI documentation says Linux uses kernel-based secret storage by default through the linux_keyutils crate. The CLI generates a key on first run, stores it in the keyring, and retrieves it on later runs. If a keyring becomes unavailable while a session exists, the CLI forces a logout for security. Proton documents this desktop Linux behavior; it does not establish how Android’s kernel keyring behaves.

In my Termux install, that default did not initialize, and login returned NoDefaultStore. The important distinction is that this was a CLI key-storage failure in Termux—not a problem with the Proton Pass Android app or its Android Keystore behavior. I described the error as a provider-initialization problem rather than a configuration mistake. Proton’s CLI documentation explains the Linux provider, but the Android-specific failure and its exact error are from my account of the incident.
Why I changed the Termux package
My first approach used an environment-variable shim. Review did not accept that solution, so I changed direction: instead of asking every Android user to work around the broken default, I patched the Termux package to disable the keyring provider by default on Android and to give a clearer error if someone explicitly selects the unsupported provider.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

I opened PR #31137, titled fix(main/proton-pass-cli): disable keyring provider on Android. Reviewer Robertkirkman’s response, as quoted in my account, was: “Thank you for fixing it!” I reported that a fresh Termux install could then log in without manually setting an environment variable. These PR details and the reported result are my account; the package change is not independently confirmed here as the current Termux recipe.
What to do if your Termux install still fails
The package-level change I described is intended to remove the need for a user-set workaround on Android. If your installed package still produces a keyring error, first check whether it has received that Termux packaging change; the available upstream CLI changelog does not answer that question because the change is in Termux packaging, not necessarily in the CLI itself.

Proton’s documented fallback for an inaccessible keyring is filesystem storage. Its troubleshooting instructions are to force logout, select the filesystem provider, and log in again:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Run
pass-cli logout --forceto ensure the user is logged out. - Set
PROTON_PASS_KEY_PROVIDER=fsin the environment used to run the CLI. - Log in again.
This is a documented workaround for an inaccessible keyring, not a recommendation that every Android user should choose filesystem storage. Proton warns that this option stores the encryption key alongside encrypted data, making it easier for someone with filesystem access to obtain both. See Proton’s CLI troubleshooting guidance.

How the key-storage choices differ
The right option depends on what the environment can provide and what exposure you can accept. The Android default described in my package change avoids requiring users to manually select a provider, but it is not a separate storage method documented by Proton. The other options below are described in Proton’s Linux CLI documentation, and Proton’s security cautions apply to their respective storage mechanisms.
| Approach | Setup and availability | Key exposure or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Termux package default on Android, as I described it | The package disables the kernel keyring provider by default, so a fresh install need not set an environment variable. This is my account of the package patch, not independently verified current package behavior. | The patch report does not specify the replacement provider’s storage properties; do not infer them from the change alone. |
| Linux kernel keyring | Proton documents this as the Linux default; it depends on a usable keyring. The documented default does not establish Android compatibility. | If the keyring is unavailable while a session exists, Proton says the CLI forces logout. |
| D-Bus Secret Service | On Linux, opt in with PROTON_PASS_LINUX_KEYRING=dbus. Proton says the CLI errors if the service is unavailable or locked rather than silently falling back. |
Requires an available, unlocked D-Bus Secret Service. |
| Filesystem storage | Select with PROTON_PASS_KEY_PROVIDER=fs; Proton documents it as a fallback when a keyring cannot be reached. |
The key is stored alongside encrypted data, which Proton warns can make access easier for an attacker able to read the filesystem. |
| Environment-variable storage | Set PROTON_PASS_KEY_PROVIDER=env and provide a non-empty PROTON_PASS_ENCRYPTION_KEY. |
Proton warns environment variables may be visible to other processes in the same session or container. |
For headless setups such as Docker, Proton likewise documents filesystem storage as a workaround when a keyring cannot be reached, while warning that it is unsafe. That guidance supports the general trade-off in environments without a usable keyring; it is not Android-specific evidence. See Proton’s CLI FAQ.

What the version history can—and cannot—confirm
The Proton Pass CLI changelog search result lists version 2.4.1 dated 2026-09-21, following version 2.4.0 on the same date. Its displayed recent entries do not mention this Android Termux packaging patch. That absence does not show that the patch is missing: an upstream CLI changelog is not a record of every Termux package change. See the Proton Pass CLI changelog.
