Playwright screenshots can differ because the pixels depend on the environment that renders the page—not just on your test code. Your computer and CI may use different operating systems, browser or Playwright versions, fonts, dependencies, display settings, headless modes, or device scales. The most reliable fix is to generate the baseline and run comparisons in the same pinned environment.
Why local and CI screenshots differ
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system and version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Browser and platform differences can affect both rendering and fonts. A test can therefore capture legitimate pixel differences even when the page and assertions are unchanged. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance recommends using the same environment for the baseline and comparison.

Operating system, browser, and runtime
Different operating systems can render text and other page details differently. A different browser engine, browser build, or Playwright version can also change the output. Playwright’s default snapshot naming includes browser and platform context; configured projects can also be reflected in snapshot names. Treat the baseline as belonging to the platform and project that produced it, rather than as a universal image.
Fonts and system dependencies
If a font is missing or has not loaded when the screenshot is taken, text can change width, line breaks, and the position of nearby elements. Linux system dependencies and installed fonts may not match your workstation. Check both the fonts installed in the runtime and whether the page’s intended web fonts have loaded before capturing.

Capture settings and timing
Viewport size, device scale, headed versus headless execution, and screenshot options all affect capture geometry or pixels. Dynamic content, animations, timestamps, rotating promotions, or personalized UI can also vary between runs. These issues are distinct from a genuine cross-environment rendering difference: stabilizing the page capture does not make separate operating systems render identically.
Diagnose the mismatch in a useful order
- Compare versions. Check the installed
@playwright/testversion and the browser version in both places. Confirm that CI’s browser binaries correspond to the Playwright version installed by the project. - Compare the runtime image. Record the OS or container image used locally and in CI, along with installed browser dependencies. Prefer the same pinned Playwright container or an otherwise equivalent OS image for baseline generation and CI execution. Playwright’s CI guidance documents installing browsers with their system dependencies and shows versioned Playwright images.
- Check execution mode and project. Confirm the same browser project, viewport, and headed or headless mode. Playwright browsers run headless by default in its documented CI setup; do not assume a local headed run is equivalent.
- Verify fonts and readiness. Make sure required system fonts are present and web fonts have finished loading before capture. Wait for the page’s meaningful ready state, not simply an arbitrary short delay.
- Compare screenshot geometry. Check viewport configuration and the screenshot scale. With
scale: 'css', the image uses one pixel per CSS pixel;scale: 'device'captures device pixels and can make high-DPI output larger. - Isolate volatile regions. If only a clock, avatar, ad, or other changing area differs, mask or hide that known region. Avoid broad tolerance changes that could make a real layout regression pass.
Make CI and local baselines consistent
The cleanest visual-regression gate has one defined runtime for both baseline creation and comparison. Pin the Playwright version and use the matching browser binaries and a versioned container image, rather than relying on whatever browser or OS happens to be installed on a runner. Playwright notes that Linux OS dependencies are not cacheable. If you cache browser binaries, key that cache to the Playwright version as its CI guidance recommends.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
When you intentionally run on multiple platforms, keep platform-specific snapshots instead of forcing one OS’s pixels to represent all the others. Playwright snapshot paths incorporate browser and platform by default, and project names can distinguish configured projects. This makes differences reviewable while preserving the fact that appearance may vary by platform.

Stabilize screenshots without hiding regressions
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing. It disables animations and hides the text caret by default. Those safeguards reduce capture-time noise, but they do not neutralize genuine differences in fonts, browser rendering, or operating systems. The available controls are documented in the toHaveScreenshot() API reference.

- Mask known dynamic elements: use
maskfor areas whose content changes by design. - Apply screenshot-only styles: use
stylePathto hide or normalize volatile content for the capture without changing the application itself. - Choose the intended scale: use CSS-pixel or device-pixel output consistently across projects.
- Set tolerances narrowly: pixel or color thresholds can account for minor capture variation, but generous tolerances can conceal meaningful visual changes.
When cross-platform appearance is part of the test
If the goal is to check how the product looks across platforms, run the relevant browser projects and operating systems deliberately, then maintain the baselines for each environment. Useful comparison axes are OS, browser engine or project, Playwright and browser versions, and device scale or viewport geometry. Separate baselines let reviewers assess platform-specific results; they do not mean the output should be pixel-identical across operating systems.
For Playwright Workspaces remote browsers, Microsoft’s visual-comparison configuration guidance describes using distinct service configuration or an OS-specific snapshot path when the remote browser’s host OS differs from the local machine.

Common mismatch symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Text wraps differently or elements shift around text | Different or unloaded fonts, browser rendering, or OS | Installed fonts, web-font readiness, browser version, and host OS |
| The whole image looks larger, smaller, or sharper | Different viewport or CSS/device-pixel scale | Project viewport, device scale, and screenshot scale |
| Only animated or personalized areas fail | Capture timing or content that changes between runs | Meaningful ready state, then a focused mask or stylePath |
| CI differs consistently from a local baseline | Different runtime, browser binaries, dependencies, or platform | Pin the image and versions, or maintain platform-specific baselines |
| CI failures appear after a dependency update | Browser cache or binaries no longer match Playwright | Install the matching browser version and key browser-binary cache by Playwright version |
