Why Picture Messages Won’t Send: Causes and Fixes for iPhone and Android

Picture messages can fail because of connection, carrier, recipient, attachment-size, storage, or messaging settings. Identify the message method, then use the matching fix for iPhone or Android.

A picture in a text can travel through iMessage, RCS, or MMS, and each has different connection, carrier, and compatibility requirements. Start by checking which method the conversation is using, whether the problem affects one person or everyone, and whether ordinary texts still send. Then work through the relevant connection, carrier, contact, attachment, and settings checks.

First, identify what kind of message is failing

“Text” can mean different services. iPhone conversations may use iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS; Google Messages can use RCS, SMS, or MMS. A photo may fail even when a plain text succeeds because picture messages often have different network and carrier requirements.

  • Only one recipient: Check the recipient’s phone number, country code, or email address, and make sure the person is not blocked. If you recently changed phones, the recipient’s messaging setup may also be relevant.
  • Every recipient: Look first at your connection, SIM, messaging app, carrier support, and plan.
  • Only photos or videos: Check MMS or RCS availability, attachment size, and data connectivity.
  • Only group conversations: Check group messaging settings and whether the carrier supports group MMS.
  • Only large or full-quality files: The attachment may exceed a carrier’s MMS limit.

On iPhone, blue bubbles indicate iMessage; green bubbles indicate SMS, MMS, or RCS, so color alone does not tell you which green-bubble method is in use. In Google Messages, check the send-method indicator near the compose area to see whether the message is set to use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. These indicators help narrow the issue but do not identify every cause. Apple’s messaging troubleshooting guide and Google Messages’ troubleshooting guide list platform-specific checks.

Check your connection and carrier service

iMessage, RCS, and MMS need Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS needs cellular service, although SMS over Wi-Fi calling may be available when that feature is enabled. Check that airplane mode is off and that your phone has a working connection. If messages fail only when you are away from Wi-Fi, mobile data or your cellular service may be the issue.

MMS also depends on carrier support and your plan. Confirm that your account is active and that your plan or available credit includes the message type you are trying to use. Google recommends checking signal, SIM setup, carrier support, plan status, and the default messaging app. If your carrier does not support the relevant service or your plan is blocking it, contact the carrier rather than repeatedly changing phone settings.

Fix MMS problems on Android

These steps apply to Google Messages on Android. Menu names and locations can differ by phone maker and Android version.

  1. Update and select the messaging app. Update Google Messages, then confirm it is set as the default SMS app in your phone’s app settings.
  2. Check the SIM and signal. Make sure the SIM is seated correctly and the phone has cellular service.
  3. Check mobile data. Ensure the phone has a data connection. MMS may not send just because Wi-Fi works.
  4. Restore default APN settings. In your device’s mobile-network or SIM settings, use the option to reset access point names (APNs) to default. APN menu names vary by manufacturer.
  5. Confirm carrier and plan support. Check that your carrier supports MMS for your device and account.

Fix picture-message problems on iPhone

  1. Check the connection and recipient. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is working for iMessage, RCS, or MMS, and verify the recipient’s number or email address.
  2. Check storage. Make room on the device if storage is nearly full. Apple says to make sure the device has enough space to receive images and videos.
  3. Check carrier support. MMS and RCS availability depends on the carrier and other compatibility requirements. Ask your carrier if you are unsure whether your plan and device support the method in use.
  4. For a full-size image that will not send, try a lower-quality option. Apple recommends trying “Send Photo Previews” or “Low-Quality Image Mode” when full-size images fail. Availability of these options can depend on the iOS version and carrier.
  5. For group MMS, check Messages settings. Review the group messaging options in Messages settings. The options may not appear if your carrier does not support them.
  6. Restart the iPhone. Apple lists restarting as a troubleshooting step.

Apple’s instructions are for iPhone and iPad; available settings and features can vary by software version, carrier, and region. See Apple Support’s full troubleshooting guide.

When only a large or high-quality photo fails

Carriers may impose MMS attachment-size limits, and there is no universal limit established here. A large image can take longer to send or fail; iPhone may compress attachments. Try sending a smaller or lower-quality version. MMS carriers may also compress images, which can reduce quality.

If both people and their networks support it, iMessage or RCS may be an alternative to MMS. RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data and offers media-quality choices in Google Messages, but availability depends on the carrier, device, region, and conversation participants. Google Messages can use SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable, but a fallback is not guaranteed to solve an attachment-size or service problem. See Google’s instructions for sending photos and other media and its RCS FAQ.

If the problem started after changing phones or messaging apps

If you moved from iPhone to Android and messages to your number are not arriving, deactivate iMessage for that phone number. If the issue began after changing messaging apps, Google recommends turning RCS chats off as a targeted troubleshooting step. These checks are relevant to switching-related failures, not routine fixes for every unsent photo. Google’s troubleshooting guide includes the steps.

When to contact your carrier

Contact your carrier if the phone has a working connection but MMS still fails after you check the SIM, APN settings, app setup, and recipient details—or if you cannot confirm that your plan supports MMS or RCS. Tell them whether plain SMS works, whether the failure affects one or all recipients, and whether it happens only with large attachments or group messages. Those details help distinguish an account or carrier restriction from a phone setting.
