What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
phpMyAdmin imports are often slow because a browser upload passes through PHP request limits before MySQL has finished parsing and writing the dump. Check max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size first. For a large or unreliable import, put the dump on the server with $cfg['UploadDir'], or bypass phpMyAdmin entirely with the MySQL client and source filename.sql;.

What actually makes a phpMyAdmin import slow?
An import has several separate stages, and the slowest stage is not always the database. With the normal phpMyAdmin workflow, your browser uploads the dump to a web server, PHP accepts and processes the request, phpMyAdmin sends SQL to MySQL, and MySQL parses each statement, checks constraints, writes rows, updates indexes and waits for disk or network resources. A delay or timeout in any stage can look like a slow database import.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The browser path is particularly fragile for large files. The upload must remain inside one web request, PHP has to keep the request alive, and a web server or proxy may impose its own timeout. If the request ends before the final statement is sent, the import may stop even though MySQL itself could have continued processing the data.
There is no authoritative universal “seconds per gigabyte” figure for phpMyAdmin imports. File size, number and size of SQL statements, indexes, disk speed, available memory, constraints and hosting configuration all change the result. The reliable way to speed up an import is therefore to identify the limiting stage and choose a transfer path that removes it.

First identify the failure mode
Do not increase every setting blindly. The symptom usually indicates which layer needs attention.
| Symptom | Likely limiting layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The Import form rejects the file immediately as too large | PHP upload or POST-size limit | Check upload_max_filesize and post_max_size; the latter must be larger. |
| The request stops after a repeatable number of seconds | PHP execution time or a web-server/proxy timeout | Check max_execution_time and the hosting provider’s request timeout. |
| PHP reports that it ran out of memory | PHP memory_limit |
Raise the limit if your plan permits, or move the import server-side or to the MySQL client. |
| The import begins, then MySQL reports a packet-too-large error | MySQL statement or row exceeds max_allowed_packet |
Reduce the size of individual statements or raise the server/client packet setting. |
| Foreign-key constraint errors appear | Load order or enabled constraint checks | Verify the dump’s table order and consider controlled foreign-key-check settings. |
| The page remains open while progress crawls but no limit error appears | MySQL parsing, index maintenance, constraints, disk or network I/O | Use a server-side or direct client import and inspect database/server resources. |
Check the four PHP limits before changing the database
The phpMyAdmin project identifies four values in php.ini as the first checks: max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size. If you cannot edit PHP configuration, ask your hosting provider to report the effective values for the PHP version used by phpMyAdmin.
upload_max_filesize
This is the maximum size PHP accepts for one uploaded file. A dump larger than this value is rejected before phpMyAdmin can import it. The limit applies to the upload itself, not to the amount of data MySQL eventually stores.
post_max_size
This caps the complete HTTP POST request. It must be larger than upload_max_filesize, because the request contains multipart form overhead in addition to the file. Setting both to the same number can still reject a file that appears to fit. Leave practical headroom rather than matching the dump size exactly.

memory_limit
PHP needs memory to handle the request and phpMyAdmin’s processing. A high upload limit does not guarantee that PHP can process a large request. If the error identifies memory exhaustion, increasing only the upload setting will not solve it.
max_execution_time
This controls how long PHP may execute the request. A dump can be below every size limit and still fail when the request reaches this time limit. Web-server or reverse-proxy timeouts can end the connection separately, so a successful change to max_execution_time does not guarantee an unlimited browser session.

How to check the effective values
- Open phpMyAdmin’s environment or PHP-information view, if your host exposes one, and note the active values rather than values in an unused
php.ini. - Compare the dump’s byte size with
upload_max_filesizeand confirm thatpost_max_sizeis higher. - If the request dies after a predictable interval, compare that interval with
max_execution_timeand ask the host about web-server and proxy timeouts. - If a value cannot be changed on the plan, stop retrying the same browser upload and use a server-side or command-line workflow.
Choose the import path that matches your access
The largest practical improvement usually comes from removing the browser and PHP request from the transfer path. The following comparison describes the trade-offs without promising a fixed speed gain.
| Workflow | Maximum practical dump size | PHP/web timeout exposure | Required access | Recovery after a failed statement | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser upload in phpMyAdmin | Limited by upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, memory and request timeouts |
Highest; the entire transfer and request must remain alive | Only phpMyAdmin and browser access | Usually requires restarting the import or using a new dump; exact resume behavior depends on the dump | Available on most plans that provide phpMyAdmin |
phpMyAdmin UploadDir import |
Limited mainly by server disk space, phpMyAdmin/MySQL processing and host policies rather than browser upload size | Lower for the file transfer; the import request can still hit execution or server timeouts | Ability to copy a file to the configured server directory through SCP, FTP or another host-provided method | The file remains on the server, so you can retry without uploading it again; failed SQL statements still need diagnosis | Only when the host permits configuring and writing to UploadDir |
| Direct MySQL client | Limited by server resources, SQL content and packet settings, not an HTTP upload form | Not exposed to the browser/PHP request lifecycle | Shell access, database credentials and the MySQL client | You can rerun from a saved file or a deliberately divided dump; partial changes still require transaction and schema awareness | Requires SSH or equivalent shell access, often available on managed MySQL hosting with SSH |
Use UploadDir to keep the dump on the server
UploadDir is the middle option: phpMyAdmin still runs the import, but the dump is copied to the server first instead of being sent through the browser request. This avoids the slowest and most failure-prone part of a large browser upload.

Configure and copy the file
- Ask the host where phpMyAdmin’s configuration file is managed and set
$cfg['UploadDir']to a directory intended for import files. On a managed plan, the provider may need to make this change. - Create or use that directory with permissions that let the phpMyAdmin process read the file. Do not place database dumps in a publicly served web directory.
- Transfer the dump to the directory with the host-supported method, such as SCP or FTP. The transfer can be resumed or repeated independently of the phpMyAdmin import request.
- Open phpMyAdmin, choose the target database, select Import, and choose the server-side file from the file list rather than uploading it from your computer.
- Start the import and watch for SQL, PHP or server errors. Keep enough free disk space for the dump and any temporary database work.
- Remove the dump from
UploadDirafter a successful import unless you have a specific retention and access policy.
This method eliminates the browser upload limit, but it does not make MySQL execute SQL faster by itself. A very large set of statements can still exceed PHP execution or web-server timeouts while phpMyAdmin is running the import. If that happens and shell access exists, switch to the MySQL client.
Use the MySQL client when shell access is available
The phpMyAdmin FAQ recommends importing directly with MySQL when you have command-line access. This removes browser upload and PHP request limits from the transfer path and is generally the most robust option for a large dump.
Interactive client method
- Copy the dump to the server or to a machine that can connect to the database.
- Open a shell and start the client, selecting the destination database with the credentials supplied by your host. A typical form is
mysql -u USER -p DATABASE. - At the MySQL prompt, run:
source filename.sql;
- Wait for the client to report completion or an error. Keep the terminal session stable; use the host’s supported persistent-session method if a remote connection may be interrupted.
- After an error, record the statement and line information before deciding whether to correct the dump, restore the target database, or rerun a clean import.
The direct client still performs the same database work: parsing SQL, enforcing constraints, writing rows and updating indexes. Its advantage is that the file no longer has to survive an HTTP request, so a slow statement does not automatically become a browser timeout.
Use compression or split the dump when limits cannot be raised
Compressed imports
phpMyAdmin’s import documentation supports compressed formats such as .sql.gz. Compression reduces the bytes that must be transferred and stored, which is useful when the dump contains repetitive SQL. It does not guarantee a proportional reduction in MySQL execution time: the server still has to execute every statement after decompression.

Splitting a dump
Splitting is a fallback when the host will not raise upload or request limits. Divide the dump into valid sequential pieces, import them in order, and retain the original file so you can verify which part failed. Splitting adds operational steps and is not a guaranteed performance multiplier. A cut made in the middle of a SQL statement can produce syntax errors, so use a dump-aware splitter or create the dump in deliberate chunks.
- Keep schema definitions before the data that depends on them.
- Preserve the original order of statements unless you understand the foreign-key and trigger dependencies.
- Name parts numerically so lexical sorting cannot put part 10 before part 2.
- Record the last successfully imported part and the first failing statement.
Handle foreign-key checks deliberately
Foreign-key checks can slow a trusted bulk load and can also cause failures when child tables appear before their parent rows. phpMyAdmin exposes $cfg['DefaultForeignKeyChecks'], which can default checks to enabled, disabled or the server’s default.
For a dump you control and know to be internally consistent, temporarily disabling checks can avoid ordering failures and reduce constraint work. Treat that as a controlled import setting, not a universal optimization:
- Use it only for a trusted dump whose relationships you have verified.
- Do not use disabled checks to hide missing parent rows or corrupt data.
- Restore normal checking after the import and validate key relationships.
- If the dump contains statements that explicitly change foreign-key settings, review those statements rather than assuming the phpMyAdmin default will prevail.
If constraints fail with checks enabled, inspect the first failing table and statement. Correcting table order or missing data is safer than repeatedly disabling checks and accepting an inconsistent database.

Understand max_allowed_packet errors
A packet is not the whole dump. MySQL defines it as a single SQL statement, a row sent to the client, or a binary-log event. When one packet exceeds max_allowed_packet, MySQL raises ER_NET_PACKET_TOO_LARGE and closes the connection.
That distinction matters: a 2 GB dump can succeed if its individual statements are small, while a much smaller dump can fail if it contains one enormous multi-row INSERT or oversized row. Changing PHP upload limits will not fix this database-level error.

Ways to correct a packet-size failure
- Raise
max_allowed_packeton the server and, where applicable, in the client configuration, subject to the limits and restart rules of your host. - Regenerate the dump with smaller extended-insert batches or otherwise reduce the size of each statement.
- Split only at valid SQL boundaries; splitting a giant statement in the middle is not valid.
- Retry through the direct client or server-side path after the packet setting and dump format are corrected.
Recover safely when an import fails
A failed import may have already committed many statements. Do not assume the database is unchanged and immediately rerun the entire file.
- Save the exact error text, the statement or line number, and the import method that produced it.
- Determine whether the dump or the destination is disposable. For a replaceable database, dropping and recreating the target before a clean retry is often clearer than layering a second partial import.
- If the database must be preserved, inspect existing tables, row counts and constraints before rerunning. A duplicate-key error may simply mean earlier statements already succeeded.
- For a split dump, mark the last confirmed part and restart from the next valid part only after checking dependencies.
- After completion, validate representative tables, row counts, indexes and foreign-key relationships. A command that exits without an error is not a substitute for checking the imported data.
A practical speed-up sequence
- Classify the symptom. Separate a hard size rejection, fixed-time timeout, memory error, packet error, constraint error and genuine slow execution.
- Check PHP limits. Verify
max_execution_time,upload_max_filesize,memory_limitandpost_max_size; ensurepost_max_sizeexceedsupload_max_filesize. - Leave the browser path. Configure
$cfg['UploadDir']and copy the dump to the server, or use a direct MySQL client when shell access is available. - Use compression or valid splitting only when necessary. These address transfer and limit problems, not every database bottleneck.
- Review constraints. For a trusted, consistent dump, use the appropriate
$cfg['DefaultForeignKeyChecks']behavior and restore normal checking afterward. - Fix packet errors at the MySQL layer. Check
max_allowed_packetand the size of individual statements or rows. - Validate and clean up. Confirm the data, then remove temporary server-side dump files and restore ordinary settings.
When changing limits is the wrong solution
Raising limits cannot compensate for insufficient disk space, a failing storage device, a saturated network, expensive index maintenance or a dump containing unusually large statements. It can also make a hosting account less stable if the provider has fixed resource quotas. If a server-side or direct-client import remains slow after the request layer is removed, investigate the SQL content and database resources rather than increasing PHP values indefinitely.
The key decision is simple: use browser upload for small, routine dumps; use UploadDir when you can place the file on the server but must keep phpMyAdmin’s interface; and use the MySQL client when shell access is available or the browser request repeatedly fails. That workflow choice removes the most common artificial bottleneck without relying on an invented speed benchmark.
