Phone Link is the Windows app behind the reaction in the title: it brings selected phone features—such as messages, notifications, calls and recent photos—onto a Windows PC. That can make Windows feel more useful in a mixed-device workflow, but it is a personal response, not proof that Windows is better than Linux. Phone Link is documented as a Windows PC app, not a native Linux client. Microsoft’s requirements and setup guide also makes clear that available features depend on whether the phone is Android or iPhone.
What Phone Link brings to a Windows PC
Phone Link connects a compatible phone to a Windows computer so you can use selected phone functions without picking up the device for every task. Depending on the phone and feature, that can include reading and replying to texts, viewing recent photos, managing notifications, making and receiving calls, and using some mobile apps. It is best understood as a bridge to particular phone functions, not a complete replacement for the phone or a universal mirror of everything on it. Microsoft’s feature and setup documentation lists the functions and notes that availability varies by platform and device.

That distinction explains why the app might change how a Linux user feels about Windows: the draw is not that Phone Link makes Windows a Linux replacement, but that it gives a Windows PC a convenient role when a phone is part of the workflow. The title conveys one person’s appreciation; it does not specify their Linux distribution, phone model or the features they used, so those details should not be assumed.
Android and iPhone do not offer the same Phone Link experience
| Phone | Microsoft’s listed requirements | Documented setup and functions |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11; Android 10 or later; phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network. | Use Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone, sign in with the same Microsoft account, pair the devices and grant requested permissions. Microsoft describes QR-code pairing and a manual-code option. Available functions vary by device. |
| iPhone | Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, or Windows 11; Bluetooth Low Energy support on the PC; iOS 16 or later. | Pair through Bluetooth. Microsoft lists messages, calls and notifications; its documentation does not describe the same feature set as Android. |
Requirements and feature availability are from Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup page, accessed October 7, 2026. Check the current guidance for your devices before pairing, because compatibility can change.

Set it up according to your phone
For Android
- On the PC, open Phone Link. On the Android phone, open or install Link to Windows.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account in both apps.
- Follow the pairing flow in Phone Link. Use the QR code or, if offered, the manual code.
- Keep the phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network and approve only the permissions needed for the functions you intend to use.
For iPhone
- Open Phone Link on a compatible Windows PC and choose the iPhone pairing flow.
- Follow the Bluetooth pairing prompts and grant the permissions needed for messages, calls or notifications.
- Review which notifications and messages you want visible on the PC before enabling access.
Microsoft’s separate call setup instructions explain the Bluetooth requirement for calls. Pairing alone does not mean every feature is supported on every phone.
Some Android-only features require a supported model
Phone screen
Phone screen lets you interact with an Android phone on the PC using a mouse, trackpad, keyboard or touch screen. It is not a general Android capability in Phone Link: Microsoft limits it to Android 10 or later devices in select markets where Link to Windows is preinstalled, and lists selected models from families including some Samsung Galaxy, HONOR, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme and ASUS ROG. Some apps and games may not respond to mouse or keyboard input. Check Microsoft’s supported-device and phone-screen guidance for the current eligibility details.

Copy, paste and drag files
Cross-device copy and paste is available only on Surface Duo and selected Android devices. Microsoft says it can transfer text and images, with images larger than 1 MB resized. Drag-and-drop file transfer is also limited to selected phone families, and touch or pen drag-and-drop is not currently supported. See Microsoft’s transfer compatibility guidance before relying on these tools.

Phone Link can surface private information on a PC. Microsoft specifically warns that allowing message access on iPhone can expose sensitive SMS content, including two-factor authentication messages. Consider where the PC is used and who can access its screen before enabling message visibility. Microsoft’s setup guidance describes the permissions involved.

- Confirm that the specific phone model and platform support the feature; Android phone screen and transfers have narrower compatibility than basic pairing.
- For Android, check that both devices use the same Microsoft account and are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Install available updates for Phone Link and Link to Windows, then consult Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting guide.
- If cross-device copy and paste fails, verify the feature toggle and connection, then close and reopen both Phone Link and Link to Windows, as described in Microsoft’s transfer troubleshooting steps.
These checks address common causes, not every failure. A feature may be unavailable because of the phone model, market, operating-system version or permissions rather than a general app fault.
