The right fix depends on which symptom you have. First compare how the text looks on the page with how it behaves when selected, copied, or searched.
Diagnose the problem by what you see
| Symptom | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Letters look changed, substituted, or distorted after editing | An unavailable font was substituted, or the PDF was damaged during conversion or saving. | Check which font the PDF uses and whether it is installed and licensed for use. If possible, recreate the PDF from its source document. |
| The page looks normal, but copied or searched text is gibberish | The PDF’s character codes may not map correctly to Unicode. | Do not treat this as a font-display problem. Inspect the PDF’s text mapping with a suitable preflight tool, or rebuild the PDF from a reliable source if available. |
| A scanned page has incorrect words or no searchable text | OCR is missing or inaccurate. | Run OCR, review uncertain words, and improve the scan image before trying recognition again. |
| Text became garbled after exporting or converting | The source or conversion route may have degraded the text. | Recreate the PDF directly from the source document. For scanned pages, make sure the image is straight and clean. |
These are practical diagnostic routes, not guaranteed diagnoses: more than one fault can affect a file.

Why a PDF can look right but copy incorrectly
A PDF does not store text exactly like an ordinary word-processing document. Its page content uses character codes that a font maps to glyphs—the shapes drawn on the page. Text extraction also needs a mapping from those codes to Unicode, the character representation used for operations such as copying, searching, and exporting. The two mappings can disagree.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat is why a page can display correctly while pasted text is nonsense. The PDF Association describes this as a successful glyph lookup with a failed Unicode lookup in its explanation of text copied incorrectly from PDFs. Adobe’s PDF specification describes a ToUnicode CMap as one way to map PDF character codes to Unicode values. The specification is PDF 1.7 / ISO 32000-1, published in 2008; it explains the mechanism, not a newly revised standard.

A font problem is different: it affects how text is drawn or edited. OCR is different again: it recognizes characters from a page image. Running OCR is not the fix for a Unicode-mapping fault in a born-digital PDF, and OCR can introduce recognition errors of its own.
How to fix garbled text in a PDF
- Save an untouched copy. Work on a duplicate so you can return to the original if a repair makes the file worse. Adobe recommends keeping a backup when editing scanned PDFs.
- Test both appearance and text behavior. Compare the page with a short passage selected, copied into a plain-text editor, and searched in the PDF. If the page itself looks wrong, investigate font or conversion issues. If it looks right but extracted text is wrong, investigate character mapping.
- For visible substitutions, check the font. Adobe Acrobat may use a fallback font when the original font is unavailable. Its guidance says text editing depends on the font being installed or embedded; when the font is not installed or embedded, Acrobat’s documented workflow does not allow text editing. Embedding a font alone should not be assumed to repair copy-and-paste mapping. Respect font licensing and installation requirements.
- For scanned pages, review OCR. In Acrobat, use All tools > Scan & OCR > Correct recognized text. Review highlighted uncertain words and correct them in the Recognized as field. Adobe also says OCR may be prompted when you try selecting text or using Read Out Loud on a file without OCR.
- Improve the scan before rerunning OCR. Blurry or low-resolution images are harder to recognize. Straighten pages and remove smudges or marks where possible, then rerun recognition and review the results.
- For conversion damage, rebuild from the source. If the original Word document is available, create the PDF directly from it rather than converting through Print to PDF or Scan to PDF. Adobe warns that those routes can produce lower-quality results for Word-origin PDFs.
- Retest the original symptom. Check that the page looks right and that affected text copies and searches correctly. For OCR repairs, check the corrected passages against the page image.
What to do when copied text is gibberish
If the page looks normal but copied or searched text is corrupted, repeatedly changing fonts or running OCR is unlikely to address the underlying issue. The problem may be missing or mismatched Unicode mapping information, such as a ToUnicode mapping. A PDF inspection or preflight workflow can help identify the mapping problem; the PDF Association discusses Acrobat Preflight, callas pdfaPilot, and pdfToolbox as tools for exploring PDF and font properties or testing Unicode mapping.

If you have the original document or a clean earlier PDF, rebuilding from that source is often the more practical route. If neither is available, a mapping problem may require specialist PDF repair; do not assume that a visual edit will fix the text layer.

When letters visibly change, check whether the font used by the edited text is available to the editor. Adobe says Acrobat can substitute a fallback font if the referenced font is unavailable. Its documentation also distinguishes adding or modifying text from editing existing text, and notes that an embedded font does not necessarily make all text edits possible when the font is unavailable.

Choose an appropriate font for added or modified text where needed, and compare the result with the original layout. Adobe’s scanned-PDF guidance cautions that layout can change when text is edited. If the defect appeared after conversion or re-export, use the original source document to recreate the PDF rather than repeatedly editing the damaged copy.

Scanned PDFs are images until OCR creates searchable text. OCR mistakes are recognition errors, not proof of a font or Unicode problem. Correct uncertain words in Acrobat’s recognized-text workflow, using the scan image as the authority. If recognition remains poor, improve the scan first: straighten skewed pages and address blur, low resolution, smudges, or marks that obscure characters.
